Process:
Start by degreasing and cleaning the parts you want to plate. If they are rusty, you will need to remove that rust one way or another. I also chose to shine the pieces by using a wire wheel.
Once the part is ready, degrease it in the supplied degreaser and rinse with water. Then dip the part in the dry acid solution for 10 to 20 seconds, then back into the water before drying and hanging on the metal rod spanning across the main playing tank.
Now it's time to hook up the positive to the wire around the bucket and the negative to the metal bar that holds the pieces. Turn on the power supply and select the appropriate amount of amps. If you are using a battery, it can be a bit of a guessing game.
Once the part is suffiencelty plates, bring it out and rinse in the water. Dry it as best you can and dip it in the passivate tanks. 20-40 seconds for gold/yellow and 20-30 seconds for silver/blue. Once evenly covered, remove from the tank, rinse with water and let it dry for at least 48 hours.

About the electrolysis for de-rusting: you should use a passive anode like stainless steel. It's faster and cleaner that way. I use it on my old hand planes. The point is to take Fe3+ ions (rust) and reduce them to Fe2+ or Fe, the soda works as a charge-mover. Using an iron anode just adds more Fe3+ to the water.
@RestoreIt
@RestoreIt 5 лет назад
Thanks for the advice John, i'll order some stainless now. appreciate it.
@florentinean7766
@florentinean7766 5 лет назад
@@RestoreIt A word of caution: With stainless steel anodes, unless you're very careful controlling temperature, voltage, and amperage, you may inadvertently produce small amounts of hexavalent chromium as a by-product of the electrolysis. Hexavalent chromium is highly toxic and carcinogenic, but the amount produced by occasional DIY electrolysis is probably minimal. Nonetheless I suggest doing your own research before changing to stainless steel anodes.

Rust removal via electrolysis, and electropolishing are both viable options for the same equipment used in electroplating. Just reverse the polarity & you're set. If your power source is adjustable, crank it up & you can etch a logo on your parts.

I will be doing this on some of my wagoneer parts. I ordered the yellow chromate, but the rest will be done relatively DIY. Using roof moss-preventative zinc strips. Solution will be vinegar, salt and pre-charged zinc solution.

How long can you leave the bath in the buckets between plating sessions? does the plating work on only ferrous metals?
