"It was called an empty chair spill because the motion was simply to declare the position of leader vacant and there was no actual challenger," Malcolm Turnbull says.
Abbott survived the spill motion by a vote of 61 to 39. It looked like a clear victory but to many, it showed that 40 per cent of the parliamentary Liberal Party preferred an empty chair to the prime minister.
