How turtle shells evolved... twice - Judy Cebra Thomas

Check out the fascinating science behind the evolution of the turtle shell, over 260 million years in the making.
--
Modern turtle shells are almost as diverse as the turtles themselves. Sea turtles have flatter, lighter shells for gliding through the water. Land-dwelling tortoises have domed shells that can slip free of predators’ jaws. Leatherback turtles have shells without the ring of bone around the edge. So how did the shell evolve? Judy Cebra-Thomas explores the ancestry of the turtle.

This video reminds me of something. Turtles bury their eggs on the shore and leave. When the little turtles hatch, they depend on the moonlight to reach the sea and if they don't reach in time, they die. Nowadays more turtles die because they can't differentiate between artificial human streetlights and the moon. Its like a quote kinda "Do you know if you are guided by the real or the fake lights?"

That's not how they got their shells; that's how their shells are made! I thought this was going to be a process of evolution thing, like linearly
@theabirde
@theabirde 3 года назад
But it is? It says that the ancestors had wide ribs like an internal shell. Then there was a turtle ancestors with wide ribs, but it also had the bottom part. And the last two were basically a turtle (the ribs had fused) and an actual turtle. Process: Reptile with Wide ribs -> Reptile with Wide ribs + Bottom piece -> Reptile with Fused ribs + bottom -> Turtle with shell -(not all turtles specialize in the same thing)-> specialized turtles like soft shelled types and .
