Rock & roll was under attack during the mid-’80s. As the music got more theatrical and provocative and MTV gave it a national platform, America’s youth screamed for more. It was obvious that pop music was experiencing a revolution it hadn’t seen since Elvis swiveled his hips on The Ed Sullivan Show. Enter Dee Snider and his band, Twisted Sister.

As odd as it sounds, the guy I respect the most from this was John Denver. They brought John Denver in because he was clean-cut and mainstream, and they obviously assumed he would side with the censors. Instead, he backed up Dee Snyder and Frank Zappa and called the PMRC Nazis and then nearly lost his music career because of it.

Admittedly I'm not super knowledgeable about Christianity or the contents of the bible but I do believe there's something in the teachings and beliefs about how you're not supposed to fuck your mom. If Gore wasn't grandstanding his own moral superiority he probably could have jumped on this easy counter-point immediately instead of bumbling a sarcastic reply about Twisted Sister not being wholesome.
@burlyzulu

@@paulybeefs8588I’m a Christian and to me it seems to me that swearing isn’t rare for a Christian, but it isn’t common either. The Bible says not to be hateful, and many view cussing/cussing frequently to be hateful and disrespectful
@paulybeefs8588
@paulybeefs8588 Год назад
@@burlyzulu I think most people would consider that to be more about propriety, politeness and appearances though, which would play directly into Snider's point that surface level appearances are not really aligned with morality or the way we treat each other, and continue to poke at the closed-minded self-claimed "Christians" to be the ones to assign the label of "hateful" and "disrespectful" to others based on how they look or speak. So it probably wouldn't have worked for Gore to bring that up. And if we are being intellectually honest, in "The Sick Mother F--king Friends of Twister" the "Mother F--king" isn't really about having sex with your mother at all, it's just an extreme adjective meant to be radical, rebellious, and humorous. But Gore still could have effectively made that argument to drive his point and further pick at the language used, since intellectual honesty isn't really worth much in Congress or at the education level of the television watching American public.
@burlyzulu
@burlyzulu Год назад
@@paulybeefs8588 yeah your right about how this plays into Snider’s point. But if you see someone dressed like him you’d probably think he’s an idiot, not saying that is how you should think. One person that I met once(he was with my sister) and when he came to meet my parents and us he was dressed like a idiot. Bright pink hideous Chicago Bulls hoodie with matching pants. That really didn’t make me think highly of him, some time later, and now I know he’s an idiot. But yes, you shouldn’t always judge someone off appearance but with the Snider case it isn’t wild to think he is a idiot, but after a few of his answers they should have thrown those wrongful judgements out the window and talk to him how they would anyone else.
@paulybeefs8588
@paulybeefs8588 Год назад
@@burlyzulu We make our snap judgments based on experience. If you see someone who looks like an idiot, there's a reason you think that. Snider was clearly used to being judged, a pretty common thing with the dirtbag rockers and punks of the era, and was 1000% ready for it. Snider wasn't infallible though, and some of the arguments he made definitely left the door unsealed. He was aided quite a bit by his own conviction, which was apparent in the strength and confidence of his statements. But he was helped even more so by Gore's incompetence and wavering. Think what you want about Al Gore, but he's not a dumb person. The comments about Tipper must have worked perfectly and enraged him to the point he couldn't even think.

As I recall, John Denver was on the PMRC's hit list because they thought the song title "Rocky Mountain High" promoted drugs. Zappa was there because they decided the lyrics on his album "Jazz from hell" promoted satanism. If they'd listened to it, they'd have known it was 100% instrumental. I think Tipper Gore first took offence at one of Madonna's albums that her daughter was listening to. Again, from what I recall, the album contained a reference to masturbation and Tipper didn't like her daughter hearing about that. A lot of Zappa's lyrics called out Republicans and televangelists for hypocrisy and dishonesty and he was pretty scathing about religious bigots and racists. He also refused drugs, and coming to work stoned was a sacking offence in his bands. I can't imagine what he'd he'd make of things today...

John Denver may have had a wholesome image and preferred to make wholesome music, but he also believed very strongly in never censoring music or art. The PMRC's Achilles' heel was assuming that Dee Snider was a dumb, untalented sex fiend. Instead they got a smart businessman who knew exactly what he was doing. Same tactic, different clothes.

The bit about Tipper Gore having a dirty mind is the crux of all of this. All of this controversy had to assume something to be valid. Notice that Dee never joined the military. Maybe he should've picked up an M-16 instead of a _geee-taaar_ as suggested by one of the characters in one of his music videos. As a gamer, you have no idea how many arguments I've gotten into with other people about the contents of games. They always eventually go down to a question similar to one that Snider had to tackle: "Would you buy video games for your kids?" I then would have to explain the existence of video game ratings and how to judge if a game is meant for a kid, teen or adult. You'd be surprised with how many people are completely unaware of the existence of rating systems like the PEGI or ESRB and just assume all video games are 'meant for children'. The issue is a lot of people would rather blame the world around them instead of realizing that they're the ones that have to raise their kids and decide what their kids can and cannot handle. It shouldn't be "Video Games are violent, so let's ban video games.", it should be "Some video games are violent, so I shouldn't get my kid those games until they're old enough."

My dad looked over the CD, read the song names and the lyrics, listened to some of it, and said it looked fine to him. Now I'm realizing that this is exactly what Dee Snyder had recommended only 6 years prior. I wouldn't be surprised if they watched this hearing! My dad used to listen to Led Zeppelin, Cream, the Who, and so on (he was a boomer). So he understood what it was like to be a rebellious teenager listening to subversive music. He was a big audiophile too, but his tastes in music got really boring over the years. My parents never questioned our music ever again, my dad even bought us our first stereo system with some great speakers and everything. I think it was more that he did not realy liked Dees humour and sarcatic jokes all the time, especialy sinse so many jof them where directly targeted on a personal plane, and i can fully understand that he wanted to defend he's wife even if she was tecnically wrong since Dee actualy acted realy provokative, probably because he knewed that the fans liked that way he preformed the whole thing. After all most what they did was in order to draw atention to the band and the bandmembers in order to sell more records, and i can imagine this must had been a golden oportunity for him, and as said he is very far from dumb so i think it was carfully planned in reality, but he wanted it to look more casual than it realy was because it would look better to the fans if it gave the impression in media of being improvised on spot and walking out as the winner.

I'm old enough to remember these hearings as they happened. I was not familiar with Dee Snyder outside of listening to his music and, if I'm being honest, was expecting him to embarrass himself. I remember being shocked and very pleased at how well he handled the hearings. It was a learning experience for me as to "not judge a book by its cover". I was so impressed by him. Never met him, but seems awesome!

Outsmarting Al Gore, who got where he was in his life by being the son of a rich senator, and "Tipper", who was nothing other than the preppy country club wife of a senator, was not that difficult, but Dee Snider did a brilliant job of it regardless.

Gore did some good for the future with his environmental initiatives and warnings. Delaying the currently inevitable due to stripping away the work he had done, at least there’s that. 11 years of college with 6 years of law school and being in the senate since 1977; he was young but a good public speaker. The problem here was he was absolutely whipped by Snider because he had absolutely 0 case. No evidence to prove his arguments, everything was perspective here. With no real knowledge on the subject he was speaking about. Truly I blame Tipper, looking at everything around the case and having researched a lot on her and the PMRC they were just rabid housewives with too much time and “influence” over their husbands.

Al Gore was a hard working and overall good and intelligent person. One of the 'very few' politicians that can claim either of those. That said, this was much ado about nothing and was a bad choice on his part.

This was GOLD! I was 16 when this all went down and watched this with glee LOL..... also, Nikki Sixx didn't have an issue with the warning labels because he knew that when you tell kids, "This has sexual lyrics, violence, etc" teens being teens will immediately buy and listen to something their parents/adults won't allow. His reply was "YES, please slap that warning label on our albums!!!" Lovely to see that whole PMRC blow up in their faces.

After seeing the hearing itself, I think one point was missed: When asked if it was the right of a parent to see if content was proper, he replied (I am paraphrasing, not quoting) that it is NOT the right of the parent, but the duty. Not only that, it is the duty of the parent to do so personally. Not to delegate it to others. I am not sure others picked it up like that. But I personally think just that one thing outclassed everyone in the room. Not bad for a pathological teenager.

So absolutely true. However, in defence of parents, being a parent is very hard work. Working for money to support that family is also very hard work. Parental advisory system can help with some of the extra work, shaving off several hours of workload. I think this is a good thing. An advice, nothing more. A rule however, is not just harmful, its wrong.

@Rie Ta Hmmm, a certification to have children. But who will determine what is "responsible enough"? I htink the problem will remain. Nature will have to solve that problem. (It may take a while, though.) At least we know who is he better parent with respect to this.
@frankroos1167
@frankroos1167 4 года назад
@@ribbitgoesthedoglastnamehe4681 Actually Snider also says something about that. He expects parents to be as reasonable as his, with respect to allowance. One record a month to check on isn't that much. My main perk with the labeling, is that the label doesn't represent the parents views, but someone elses. And I agree with Snider on this: Raise your child YOUR way. NOT someone elses.

I use the warnings and labels as a tool in helping filter what’s appropriate for my kid. A tool but not the only one. I also talk to my kid about what’s right and wrong and how they can judge for themselves. I won’t always be there to tell them. My job is to prepare them to be able to judge for themselves. The more tools i have the more options i have.

There were lots of overdramatic incidents however there was actual satanic practices that often ended atrociously. The one middle school with like 500 children that everyone said was not true imo was actually true. The FBI recently released documents about a cia backed cult the Finders and in the documents read how there were underground structures beneath the school which was a big piece of evidence yet the existence of these tunnels were denied however as I just said the documents released by the feds admitted there were underground structures and tunnels. I think what happens is in lots maybe even most cases it can either be mistaken or dramatized however there are actual cases of some sick and dark shit. People can be despicable no doubt.

@@christinagurchinoff1517 I think stepping in is hardly ever needed. When I was 9 (back in 1990) I came across this TV series where people would turn into lizards or whatever, and I couldn't bare to watch it at all. I was actually mildly traumatized for a day or two from watching half an episode. But I didn't need my parents to tell me not to. In fact, if my parents would've told me anything, it would be to watch it, since all other kids did, lol. Each person, young or not, can decide for themselves (as they always do anyway). I think ratings are quite presumtuous, and often (if not always) based on subjective opinions rather than any objective observations. To be fair, the little "o" in violent movies is ok. I have no problem with the idea of letting people know that something may cross their sensitivity limits. (A sticker doing that, with no assumptions based on age, would be ok too.)
