@@burlyzulu We make our snap judgments based on experience. If you see someone who looks like an idiot, there's a reason you think that. Snider was clearly used to being judged, a pretty common thing with the dirtbag rockers and punks of the era, and was 1000% ready for it. Snider wasn't infallible though, and some of the arguments he made definitely left the door unsealed. He was aided quite a bit by his own conviction, which was apparent in the strength and confidence of his statements. But he was helped even more so by Gore's incompetence and wavering. Think what you want about Al Gore, but he's not a dumb person. The comments about Tipper must have worked perfectly and enraged him to the point he couldn't even think.

As I recall, John Denver was on the PMRC's hit list because they thought the song title "Rocky Mountain High" promoted drugs. Zappa was there because they decided the lyrics on his album "Jazz from hell" promoted satanism. If they'd listened to it, they'd have known it was 100% instrumental. I think Tipper Gore first took offence at one of Madonna's albums that her daughter was listening to. Again, from what I recall, the album contained a reference to masturbation and Tipper didn't like her daughter hearing about that. A lot of Zappa's lyrics called out Republicans and televangelists for hypocrisy and dishonesty and he was pretty scathing about religious bigots and racists. He also refused drugs, and coming to work stoned was a sacking offence in his bands. I can't imagine what he'd he'd make of things today...

It was actually part of the basis of his friendship with Frank Zappa (they had strong beliefs about censorship, and they both loved being fathers)...they made an odd duo, but got along surprisingly well.

I never heard of this. But I also thought Denver would defend rock. He seems like the type to laugh and say: "Yeah, it's not my type of music, but it's still good music." John Denver was an amazing artist, but an even more amazing human, by all accounts.

The cherry on top was when the PMRC expected John Denver to be supportive of their goals because he was viewed as a squeaky clean country folk singer. Instead he passionately opposed censorship and vocally supported the rights of the artists.

Denver was the real hero - and if you said that to Dee Snyder's face, he'd use much stronger language in agreeing with you.

Absolutely! I know a number of motorcycle bikers, some of them look the stereotype to a T, they are all the most polite, awesome guys I could hope to know. I ended up bringing a friend to a metal concert because he was curious, though he outright admitted he was nervous. He was scared someone might try to fight him. Ended up having a great time, we talked to all the bands and they were all super chill. Yeah metal bands look mean, but they genuinely appreciate everyone who comes to see them since its kind of become a smaller genre in the grand scheme of things. My friend's been to like 9 concerts since them, always has a great time.

I was in middle school when this happened and I remember my dad talking to me about it. My dad played Zappa records in the house since I can remember so he was firmly on the fuck the Senate side. Nuture, nature and critical thinking and research needs to be taught at every level of education in usa like it is in other parts of the world, not just at college level.

@@WolfkinNorthclaw All my kids loved horror movies when they were young. My sons were born in '82 and '84, and the late 80's-early 90's were when all those slasher movie franchises were very popular. I got a lot of flack from other parents because I let my sons watch those movies and listen to bands like Nirvana. They went right off their heads when I let them and their sister listen to Marilyn Manson and Eminem. I trusted my kids, and I knew they were smart, good people. And as adults, they still are. They listened to Marilyn Manson without becoming satanic serial killers, just like I grew up to be a good person despite listening to Alice Cooper and KISS in my teens. The thing is, every generation had that music that the older generation thought was indecent or would lead their kids astray. The parents who were upset about bands like Twisted Sister were probably fans of Elvis or Little Richard or Jerry Lee Lewis when they were young...singers that their parents definitely didn't approve of.

The parents should be egaging their children in arts and crafts and other fun activities. Better yet, if their child wants to listen to something that the parent may seem mature, listen to the music/watch the movie, etc very thoroughly in question and determine themselves if it's good or not. Explain why to their child why they can't watch/listen/ to this movie, song, game etc. If parent think its okay, then it's their responsibility to explain what's going on in a context for a child to easily process

As a gamer, you have no idea how many arguments I've gotten into with other people about the contents of games. They always eventually go down to a question similar to one that Snider had to tackle: "Would you buy video games for your kids?" I then would have to explain the existence of video game ratings and how to judge if a game is meant for a kid, teen or adult. You'd be surprised with how many people are completely unaware of the existence of rating systems like the PEGI or ESRB and just assume all video games are 'meant for children'. The issue is a lot of people would rather blame the world around them instead of realizing that they're the ones that have to raise their kids and decide what their kids can and cannot handle. It shouldn't be "Video Games are violent, so let's ban video games.", it should be "Some video games are violent, so I shouldn't get my kid those games until they're old enough."

@Paul Martin If you think your kids can handle it, and mature enough for it, go for it. The main focus of my rant was against those parents who buy their kids games and then later complain about the content in the games, blaming game developers instead of their own lack of parenting skills.

It's not "unsuitable for all people under the age of 18" sticker, but an advisory sticker. And if you want to be lazy about it, then just buy records that don't have the said sticker on. And like the video said, in the end that sticker just gave the album some street cred and increased the sales.

My comment was only about Dee, that i like the fact that he is against drugs and not just another of those fatheaded defenders of narcotic drugs. It's interesting that all hopes were lying on John Denver during these hearings, because this was right in the peak of Denver's popularity and fame, and as the most mainstream artist of the three, he was the most likely to be taken seriously by the committee. And yet the ones who really threw congress for a loop and poked several holes in the committee's credibility were Zappa and especially Dee. Not to say John Denver didn't contribute, he did considerably and added a lot of credibility and support for the musician's side, but it were the ones least expected to have an impact on the hearings who ended up doing the most

Gore did some good for the future with his environmental initiatives and warnings. Delaying the currently inevitable due to stripping away the work he had done, at least there’s that. 11 years of college with 6 years of law school and being in the senate since 1977; he was young but a good public speaker. The problem here was he was absolutely whipped by Snider because he had absolutely 0 case. No evidence to prove his arguments, everything was perspective here. With no real knowledge on the subject he was speaking about. Truly I blame Tipper, looking at everything around the case and having researched a lot on her and the PMRC they were just rabid housewives with too much time and “influence” over their husbands.

Al Gore was a hard working and overall good and intelligent person. One of the 'very few' politicians that can claim either of those. That said, this was much ado about nothing and was a bad choice on his part.

So absolutely true. However, in defence of parents, being a parent is very hard work. Working for money to support that family is also very hard work. Parental advisory system can help with some of the extra work, shaving off several hours of workload. I think this is a good thing. An advice, nothing more. A rule however, is not just harmful, its wrong.

I use the warnings and labels as a tool in helping filter what’s appropriate for my kid. A tool but not the only one. I also talk to my kid about what’s right and wrong and how they can judge for themselves. I won’t always be there to tell them. My job is to prepare them to be able to judge for themselves. The more tools i have the more options i have.

When I was 9 (back in 1990) I came across this TV series where people would turn into lizards or whatever, and I couldn't bare to watch it at all. I was actually mildly traumatized for a day or two from watching half an episode. But I didn't need my parents to tell me not to. In fact, if my parents would've told me anything, it would be to watch it, since all other kids did, lol. Each person, young or not, can decide for themselves (as they always do anyway). I think ratings are quite presumtuous, and often (if not always) based on subjective opinions rather than any objective observations. To be fair, the little "o" in violent movies is ok. I have no problem with the idea of letting people know that something may cross their sensitivity limits. (A sticker doing that, with no assumptions based on age, would be ok too.)
