How Two Small Towns In Maine Couldn't Get Along

I had fun making this video clip. A chance to remember my 25 years in Rockport/Camden Maine as a local citizen. I have a pretty big film company in town which at one point reached 75 employees. Every year, I committed to make at least one free film to help an organization in town. One of the wonderful things about living in Maine were the old people and their memories-the way that they spoke, the accent, and the respect that they had in their speech for one another. When I would walk in town as a fairly young person and I passed an old person, I would say “good afternoon” and they would always respond respectfully. This story is about the town of Rockport and Camden, two little towns right next door to one another, and how they quickly get along for so many years. Of course they get along now. I look forward to the comments and hearing from subscribers what is happening or has happened in your town.

Thank You Mr. Hoffman, I live in the western mountains of Maine. I am 47 and I remember my parents taking us camping over east and we went to Rockport to see Andre the Seal. I had the little stuffed seal the whole nine thanks for the great flashback God bless.

I'm a Mainer in my early 20s, and as a whipper snapper I really appreciate these windows into the past you offer. There was another video of yours that featured some very old Maine footage that was absolutely awesome. It goes without saying that everything is so much different now.... And I learn more about the differences by the day still. Its because of the efforts of documentarians like yourself that we are still able to conjure up times of old to this degree. You really are a modern day historian, thank you for your work sir. I've archived the footage of yours I value most for the sake of longevity and will continue to do so. The vistas you offer into the past are invaluable.

I was privileged to service the Camden/ Rockport area as a FedEx Ground driver from October 1997- March 2008. I love the area and the people. I would go to bed every Sunday night excited and anxious to get back to my delivery route Monday morning. I even met John Travolta on December 22, 2007 in downtown Camden. I miss those days but I’m very glad to have had the opportunity. Charlie

I live in Mexico, Maine across the river from Rumford. I can remember my parents telling me stories about large groups of people fighting on the bridge between the town's. Most of them were in highschool or young adults. They where mostly fighting over which town or school was better. Needless to say the football games where brutal.

Your journey as a film maker is every bit as fascinating as the many thousands of journeys you've documented over the many years, not only is what you're doing clearly a labour of love, but it's a public service. I'm in the UK, and it is SO difficult to find this level of detailed local history. People like you give people like me a permanent link to the past, thankyou for bottling these stories before they're gone forever.

Wow this sounds like an entirely different world. I'm a 20 year old living in the silicon valley and the parts talking about community and especially helping the poor got to me. The SF Bay Area has always felt disconnected with people mostly concerned with themselves (including myself) and my fellow classmates seem to care more about "their" future (getting into "good" college, getting a "good" job as an engineer or doctor or lawyer). Its no secret we san-fransicans are materialistic. A huge part of me wants to know my neighbors, my workplace neighbors on a deeper level than "hello-goodbye".

Thank you for this,I loved it. I grew up about an hour and a half up the coast, I almost sixty now, and I never heard of the dust up between these two towns. I do remember Andre the seal though, that was a big thing back in the seventies. Most of us natives never got what all the commotion was about. There were seals everywhere, and were a pain in the ass for fishermen,LOL.Growing up on the coast of Maine back then was very special. I don't think too many of us took it for granted. Thanks again, nice job!

Ah the Maine feud! They do last over the most trivial and easily forgotten issues. My grandmother was a Keniston (note the T) and her family did not speak to their Kenison relatives for almost 200 years, preserving an argument over symbolic participation in the Boston tea party by keeping or dropping that T. The sides didn't call a truce until the 1960's.

Thanks for sharing this! It's wonderful and such a great time capsule! I live in Marblehead, Mass. and we have a rivalry with Beverly, which is on the other side of Salem, over where the U.S. Navy's Birthplace is. I've read stories about it getting violent in the past, especially at high school football games. The debate centers on the fact that the ship was owned by and crewed by Marbleheaders but refitted in a yard in Beverly. I've always wondered why we don't just say that it started here in Essex County and stop all the bickering!

Oh that was an excellent story great job David I love those kind of stories it was a perfect mixed with past and present pictures and people talking I really enjoyed it I shared it on my Facebook page. I appreciate your expertise. My only other thought was how the people love this area and I think about the Indian people who had to give it up but I guess we all have our time under the sun.

Love the part about the Bok family. My daughter lives in Lake Wales, FL where you can find Bok Tower. I also had an English teacher on North Haven, Tony Bok, who also taught my sister 10 years prior (among others). In fact, their whole family lived on both Fox Islands for a stretch. I remember them all well. My wife is from Vinalhaven and she remembers Gordon (Denny) Bok coming to her house many times when she was young, so he could play guitar with her father, Brud Clayter.

I call bull shit. I grew up in Bath. Granted I moved because if I didn't I'd have gone to jail. Bath Pd loved me. But I digress. If they didn't kick the coffins and reno's out. They didn't kick you out. No disrespect.
