How U.S. Army THAAD Will Strengthen Israel Air Defenses
The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) is a sophisticated missile defense system designed to intercept and destroy short-, medium-, and intermediate-range ballistic missiles during their terminal phase of flight.
THAAD is a critical component of the United States' layered missile defense strategy, offering protection against missile threats that are typically aimed at both civilian populations and military assets. THAAD was developed by Lockheed Martin for the U.S. Army and falls under the broader framework of the Missile Defense Agency (MDA).
Its development began in the late 1980s, with the aim of providing a defense capability to intercept ballistic missiles in the upper atmosphere or just outside of it, at altitudes ranging from 25 to 150 kilometers (about 15 to 93 miles). Unlike other missile defense systems like the Patriot, which intercept missiles in the lower atmosphere, THAAD intercepts them at higher altitudes.
