How Ukrainian DIY Drones Are Taking Out Russian Tanks | WSJ

Since the Ukrainian counteroffensive against Russian forces began, there’s been a dramatic increase in Ukraine’s use of FPV, or first person view drones to execute kamikaze-style attacks on Russian tanks, troop positions and other large-scale weapons. The aim is to operate cheaply and to make the military less dependent on Western weapons.
WSJ gathered dozens of videos from Ukrainian units on the frontlines, to break down how their drone teams execute these attacks on Russia’s military.

Actually using drones makes so much sense. They are like infinitely cheaper than Javelins and just as deadly making them the ultimate weapons.
@robertstenn1350
@robertstenn1350 10 месяцев назад
@@henryg3313 Yes a Javelin works differently than drones and has advantages like being fire and forget (the operator only needs to lock on, launch the missile and its guidance handles the rest) as well as a sophisticated tandem warhead that will defeat Russian explosive reactive armor. That said FPV drones are extremely cheap in comparison to a Javelin and have a ton of versatility.

The problem is that civilians don't have the same protection as regular soldiers do, if they use lethal weapons. They're not considered soldiers and won't get prisoner of war privileges. They also loose their civilian privileges in war. Not that the Russians have cared so far though... Either way, it's highly risky as a civilian to take up arms, more so than soldiers. @@BayuAH In some instances, the cheaper units are more difficult to destroy, simply because the weapons capable of reasonably being used against them just weren't meant for that purpose. Like, a small recon drone. If it's high up, it's going to be extremely difficult to hit it with small arms, so the only thing that can reasonably expect to take it down is probably a missile. But that missile was designed to strike much larger targets like helicopters or manned fixed-wing aircraft, so they're a lot more likely to fail against a smaller, cheaper target.

The same is said about the converse, though. Iranian-made Shahed-136 drones cost about $20,000 to make, but it takes Ukraine about $500,000 to shoot each one down (they're using NASAMS short- to midrange air defense missiles). Long story short, BOTH sides are having a big drone problem, but Ukraine is unfortunately receiving the brunt of it, due to the Iranian made ones being sent to Russia in huge quantities.

Saying they are a $10 million dollar tank when as far as I'm aware they are stripped of western era and have already been in service over a decade is America over pricing their contributions. Turbine powered tanks are a bad idea without good logistics and when your opponent can out range you it strains logistics so having a fuel hungry tanks is a bad idea. There's a reason they prefer even old Leos To my point would more drones be of benefit to Ukr, possibly, what you miss is how many drones are destroyed every day in this war. Turkish drones have been sent and are being lost by the 10s - 100s per day. That's why the Iranian derived 1 use drones are great, they are smaller, as they don't return they have a good range, and are only really detectable at audible and visual range. Destroying an armored vehicle by means of a drone and sinking an attack or missile submarine by drone are different things. Quite possibly for the United States losing a submarine due to a drone attack or not would mean a declaration of war, and going to war with the United States is something that everyone would avoid.

Drones provide massive cost / benefit over tanks and even artillery. I'm talking well over 1,000 fold cost / benefit over say a 4 million dollar tanks depending on the drone type and method of deployment. i.e. kamikaze vs anti tank grenade dropper. Lesser cost / benefit advantage over artillery, however still significant over a 2 million dollar Howitzer standard piece.
@mitchellcouchman1444
@mitchellcouchman1444 10 месяцев назад
You can't fight a war with these, just like you can't just win a war with artillery, otherwise why are both sides still using tanks? Most tanks are lost to commercial drones or artillery though.

They do not outperform arty, arty is still the leading cause of death and injury
@JoeyBlogs007
@JoeyBlogs007 10 месяцев назад
Notwithstanding that, the cost/benefit for drones case is immense. Ultimately drones could outperform arty as kill all machines. They just have to locate arty and destroy them. As long as they are significantly cheaper, drones will ultimately outperform all battlefield vehicles, except perhaps anti air. However head to head pitted against each other, drones still outperform arty. It would come down to tactics. You just need a drone that can detect and target arty with a large enough warhead. 1000 drones will be cheaper than 1,000 arty pieces. If they both start at the same time against the enemy, drones will win, because they have greater range, so the drones will detect arty, well ahead of arty detecting and destroying drone forces. Yes arty have a greater firing rate and can cause more destruction, however they have to get closer to their target first and in a one on one race, all else being equal, drones have the advantage over arty. i.e. anti arty drones appropriately deployed. When AI vision becomes standard for drones ( as available commercially ), arty will have nowhere to hide. The AI vision tech is already there, but it's being held back. The nature of war will change and arty wont be able to get close to targets with sufficient drones in place to defend against attack. They just need drones specifically designed for arty. Not only that however, once the payload capacity and firing rate of drones is improved, it will be game over for anything on the ground. We are just seeing the beginning of this type of warfare. Anyway my point was with regard to cost/benefit of drones vs tanks and arty and that aspect is very clear.
@mrgamingking18
@mrgamingking18 10 месяцев назад
@@JoeyBlogs007 they are not currently out performing arty in the future im sure but not rn
@JoeyBlogs007
@JoeyBlogs007 10 месяцев назад
Much depends on tactics applied also. Drones can seek and take out arty munitions dumps. So once they identify the arty, the munitions are close by. They just have to take out the munitions dump and then the arty is disabled for a period of time. Larger drones can be called in to take out the arty with heavier drop munitions, or they can provide GPS targeting coordinates for GPS arty of Kamikaze drones. Based on the 2 million dollar arty piece, even if a Kamikaze anti artillery drone cost $4000, that's still 500 anti arty drones for every one arty piece. Even if it takes an average of 3 drones to disable one arty piece, that's still around 166 to one cost advantage of the drone against the arty. So they could take out 166 arty pieces using drones, for the equivalent cost on one arty piece, based on a conservative 30% effectiveness efficiency rate of the drone.

I'm going to call it, next 5 years we're going to see the US Military doing a 'hand held drone operator' MOS. The ability to have a squad mate pop up a drone, to scout ahead in real time, and get a birds eye view of enemy fortifications before a push is going to be insane. Imagine you're working on some offensive, and you have direct callout on radio of a $50 dollar drone telling you where the enemy is, how many of them, blah blah blah. Reaper drones no longer need to play surveillance for operations, and can purely build into support. Squad level tactics can even use grenade drones to drop explosives on enemies, or even smokes to disrupt their vision. When I enlist in the US army next week. It's going to be the #1 thing I'm interested in if it becomes a thing. I'll reclass in an instant if I can do that kind of stuff.

I dont remember the exact number but I read that Russia already invests something like $3 billion in drone manufacturing and is currently building a factory in Russia to mass produce the iranian Shahed drones. Ukraine recently announced to invest around $1.08 billion into drones. Ukraine is a poor country but I think they still have to prioritize this issue. Im worried $1 billion isnt enough. Id like to see Ukraine invest at least as much as Russia into drones. Drones will be a major factor in this war and the side with more and better drones will have an advantage. And to all Ukraine supporters: Prioritize donating to groups and units that focuse on drones. Thats what I do. Yes humanitarian aid and conventional weapons etc are important too but drones are in my opinion the most important issue in this war.

For people wondering how tanks and armored vehicles will ever overcome the small drone threat, which is a great question, first thing to keep in mind that predicting the future of war is by far the hardest possible thing to do. That’s because the smartest people, of each nation, spend trillions of dollars to best give them the advantage in a future war. Whether it’s Georgia, Indonesia or the United States; top talent spends all its time thinking about this and is a top priority of the government. Secondly, there is already a solution to this threat coming out of the United States. Lasers. Essentially, lasers have gotten to the point that realistically in a few more years a laser could be installed on every tank, armored vehicle, etc. The lasers are already good to go - just not in mass adoption. I think the real question is “Will lasers get to the point that anti tank missiles, drones and even tank projectiles themselves could be stopped by them?” They are already on the verge of stopping artillery shells for example.
