Sometimes an overwhelmingly crushing show of force on a single battle prevents dozens of others. "Look at what we are capable of bringing to this little battle. You don't want to see what we bring if we consider it a big battle." I also imagine the call went something like, "Back off. This is your one and only warning. Do not proceed or you will be fired upon with deadly force."

I'm sure the first call to Russia was done in a very profesional manner and specific questions were asked about the mercenary troops. I'd guess that the US had a good idea exactly who was about to attack them. I mean the convoy had Russian tanks, that is a pretty good indicator of who might be involved. So I'd bet the US made sure to cover their political ass before lighting up the mercenaries and sending a message.

Dave, you are talking about the A-10 warthog and its Gatling gun. The Apache does not use a Gatling gun, just an auto cannon.

A point glossed over in this video, and is amazing, is that the only foot soldiers were in the refinery itself. The U.S. just remotely vaporized them with air, artillery, and drones. Presumably because we just had a big lunch, and we didn't want to drive infantry out there.

They knew a week before the attack even happened. The US watched them build up for a week and had this planned out way in advance. People get so caught up in the combat aspect of something like this and don't understand the intel side.

Despite what side of the fence you might be on, you can't deny the power the US military can wield. 40 US Special Forces successfully repelled an attack of 500 elite Mercenaries and heavy armor.

You can actually find recordings of those calls from the Russians he's referring to on RU-vid, with translations. They honestly sound incredibly shell-shocked and exhausted. I wish he'd have played those instead. He doesn't mention it, but it was 40 Americans up against the 500 Wagner/Syrians. One American was actually wounded. He sprained his ankle. Seriously. The first and last vehicles are disabled to keep those in the middle from advancing or retreating, then the attack starts from the back and is "walked forward," causing the enemy to try to "flee" forward and get bunched up against their own destroyed equipment, making them easier targets. Raising the flag then attacking is some serious John Paul Jones shit haha.

As a Marine Grunt I learned a bit of call for fire that in most cases would have involved 60mm and 81mm mortars, but also artillery. If stretched thin enough then it could have also been for air cover with our Cobras, F18s or possibly the Army's Apache or anything from the Air Force. However, even with just the 60mm and 81mm mortars life would suck to be on the receiving end of either of those. I can't even begin to imagine being hit by artillery, Apaches and everything the Air Force chucked into the mix.

Mercenaries serve two main roles for their employers the first is as trainers and advisors for local troops, the second as force multipliers embedded with local troops to stiffen them up and provide logistical, communication and fire support. If the country has enough money they will hire mercenaries AS their military and forming their primary strike units with local forces acting as support as when the PMC group Executive Outcomes was hired in Africa. The last unofficial purpose mercenaries serve, especially groups that are loosely affiliated with their governments (looking at your Wagner), is that of throw away units. They can be used for missions that are politically sensitive and if things go south they can be disavowed. If Moscow did order the strike it was to see if the U.S. had the backbone to stand and fight if confronted.

US army vet here. Wagner group got lucky... There were no A-10's used. Iran's Qasem Soleimani learnt a similar lesson two years later. I'll wonder till the day I die if Russia would have invaded Ukraine if Trump was still in office? It's academic at this point, but I doubt it.

You know it's a devastating ass-whooping when afterwards another advance can be halted and reversed with a single phone call of "hey, is that _your_ forces advancing on us?". Bet Russia instantly went "oh no, not again! Sod that call them back! Call them back!!" Is it just me who thinks that medal they made for the Wagner survivors was rather cruel? I mean, I know what they _intended_ it to mean. Showcasing the sheer bravery and luck of even _surviving_ that night. But to me instead of looking like a Russian bravely standing up to an Apache helicopter, it more shows a Russian dying horribly under gunfire from an Apache whilst everything around him burns. Way to take a guy who just had to witness a bunch of guys he was likely _incredibly_ close with - having spent months if not years together in horrible conditions - literally torn to shreds in front of him with absolutely _NO_ way to fight back or even hide, who now likely has _very_ severe shell-shock and then you give him a medal depicting _exactly_ what he just went through for him to be reminded of every day for the rest of his life. That's just ... cruel.

Apache helocopters don't use Gatling guns they use a 30 mm chain gun. What you are thinking of is the A-10 which does have a 30 mm Gatling cannon in it. There is a big difference between a chain gun and a Gatling gun.

The definition of "F around and find out"

The AH-64 Apache Attack Helicopter is armed with a 30mm chaingun on the nose, Hellfire laser guided anti-armor missiles, and sometimes Stinger anti-aircraft missiles. From miles away, using radar and heat signatures, one helicopter in the squadron assigns targets to each missile system on each Apache for efficiency, the pilot controls the nosegun by rotating his head using a screen in their visor, the gunners push their fire button when they get the order and loose the first volley of missiles. A chaingun doesn't act like a normal gun. It's got a single barrel and the bolt is controlled by a stepper motor that rotates a few degrees attached to a chain similar to a bicycle or motorcycle chain. As the stepper motor rotates back and forth, the chain pushes and pulls the bolt and also runs another mechanism that pulls the ammo feed so the bolt ejects an empty shell and then chambers a fresh round where it's electrically ignited. It doesn't have to rely on successful ignition to work the action like a regular gun. If there's a jam or a round doesn't go off, it doesn't matter, it's pulled out and ejected so the firing isn't interrupted. A pilot can't exactly clear a jam while they're flying. The chain gun fires about 2500 rpm (it can be electrically controlled with a rheostat dial), they fire in bursts so the gun won't overheat. The shells are usually Armor Penetrating - Incendiary, so they punch through a vehicle's armor and ignite fuel tanks. The fun part is, the shells were designed against the Russian T-72 tank and the Russian BMP APC, which is what they were attacking during this incident. The Russians have what's called "Active Reactionary Armor" which are metal boxes about the size of a shoebox full of explosive and shrapnel with a layer of armor on the bottom, like a US Claymore directional mine. Normally, if the "shoebox" gets hit by a missile, like a Hellfire missile, the shoebox explodes the shrapnel outwards and disables the missile before it can hit the actual armor and go off. However, the Apaches "soften" up the target with rounds from their nosegun first, which disable the shoeboxes and then they follow up with their Hellfire anti-tank missiles, if they have to. The Apache's 30mm rounds are powerful enough they can destroy a tank a mile away and lightly armored vehicles like APC's from 3 miles away. Like most anti-tank shells, a lot of the energy is used up to punch through and shatter the armor plating, after that, the round isn't going fast enough. The armor plating that got pushed into the crew compartment (known as spalling) bounces around the interior of the vehicle along with chunks of what's left of the shell, killing everyone and destroying everything inside the hull. I was talking to a Desert Storm vet whose unit came upon a dead tank that had been attacked by a 30mm. He said it looked like Swiss cheese on the outside with a bunch of holes he could stick his thumb into. The interior was nothing but scrap metal. Every piece of equipment inside had holes, rips, and tears. He grabbed a chunk of what was left of a 30mm round, but he had to be careful, because the interior would have cut him if he climbed inside. The A-10 Warthog uses the same 30mm rounds, but they're fired from the Avenger Gatling gun at 3600 rpm and they use depleted uranium shells, which are DENSE and HEAVY and were designed to kill a T-72 tank from 3 miles away. The AC-130 is usually armed with a 7.62 Gatling minigun that fires 4000 rpm, a 20mm (or 25mm depending on the variant) Vulcan Gatling at 3000 rpm, and a 110 mm cannon with High Explosive rounds as fast as the crew can unload and reload it, all at ground targets by individual crews at various targets directed by a firing coordinator as they circle around the target hundreds of meters above the target, closer at night. They used to fire the 7.62 miniguns at up to 6000 rpm, but the high rate of speed was wearing the guns out, so after some upgrades were made, they decided to slow them down so they weren't destroying the transmissions and clutches (the mechanism is similar to a starting motor on a car engine). The Vulcan Gatling guns are what fighter jets are armed with and the 110mm cannon is normally towed artillery. Since they were first used, their weapon combos have changed as technology changed. They originally had dual mounted 7.62 miniguns, dual mounted 20mm Vulcans, and dual mounted 40mm Bofors anti aircraft guns. Gatling gun rates of fire can be adjusted with a rheostat, also, since they're rotated by electric motors.

I hear that one of the big complaints form Wagner was they were sent out on missions that amounted to suicide. This likely was a factor. Also I can really see all these Americans bored out of their minds in the dessert finally get someone to jump on so everybody wanted in on it. They were probably drawing straws to see who got to go next.

1 single American ally injured. 200+ Mercenaries Erased. Americans set up multiple measures to prevent conflict. A deconfliction line alone should have been enough. Mercenaries crossed the line. Hotline was set up… Americans called, asked if these were “Russian troops attacking?”, Russian officials said no. Done deal, fates sealed.

From what i have heard, immediately after this, the US command center had their chaplain come in a say a prayer with the soldiers. It was not lost on the US just how much life they had taken and it was not taken lightly.

there was only 30 us special forces at that base and 16 came as a relief force and arrived after the battle.

These conversations are extremely simple The caller identifies himself and asks relevant questions after giving a report on the situation, the recipient replies as accurate as possible after identifying himself as well In this case the Russians decided to doom Wagnerites by playing the "nope, not us" game and pretend it wasnt them when it was essentially them who hired a PMC to do the work undercover but its also possible that the guy who answered the phone was simply unaware of the actual truth
