This "they're not civilized like us" statement is true. Pacific islanders are not perfect, but for sure they are not taking uncivilized pride in pointless torture. Unfortunately, we (or our descendants) are going to pay ten times, this horrifying crime, in our own flesh.
My grandfather was one of the testers for this; he was a diver who would observe the underwater conditions directly after the bombs were detonated. He died at 56 years old from cancer caused by the high levels of radiation.
@V3RTIGO222 they never pursued anything but I do know my grandma had some sort of substantial pension for the remainder of her life. I mean, it was the military and they really had no idea what the severity of the fallout damage would be for people in its proximity.
Yea, they didnt really understand radiation near as we do now, Back then. Even now we hardly know half of it, If that. I don't understand how someone who understands and was schooled on nuclear science, could make this stuff.

My father in law served in the army in the 70s, he was sent to clean up the islands, no ppe, no clean drinking water etc, a lot of people that served over there are no longer alive, died horrible painful deaths. The government recognizes him as an atomic veteran after years of trying to get justice, no compensation. I also feel for the people who are native to the Marshall Islands they didn’t deserve that

Government lied to these young poor men living up north in the 70s saying hey do you wanna go to an island paradise? Not knowing that they were going to be picking up nuclear war materials and drinking contaminated water, fishing in that water eating the fish.
My dad died of leukemia and my mom fought autoimmune diseases most of her life, both likely attributable to being downwinders in the southwest. My mom told me about how they could see the yellow clouds of atomic fallout blown into the valley after a test in Nevada. The fallout clouds would centralize in the canyons and foothills along Utah's Wasatch Front. Rates for Thyroid cancer and other fallout-related diseases is extremely high for the people who grew up there during the 50s, 60s, 70s. I feel for the Marshallese people. The US government committed these acts against so many people, and they knew almost the entire time what the outcome would be.
I'm very ashamed of my government. It's such a tragedy that these people in the Marshall Islands are so ignored and left to suffer with so little. They did absolutely nothing to deserve having to live and die this way. [For honest truths, pls read the informative and insightful, multi-page comment by 'Mister Lianghui' at, "The Coming War on China": ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-V42KtSeo3uI.htmlsi=gaElCf8Iekxh8yiB].. I live in a town in Oklahoma where a lot of the Marshall islanders moved to and it’s sad knowing what was done to their homeland. I’m glad it’s being spoken about.
There's many examples of this. Like the intentional injecting of syphyllis into people of African descent to see what happens. They were completely unaware. So, as much as the nazis are to be loathed for their actions in WWII, the USA has their share of crimes against humanity to answer for.
I spent a week on Majuro last year, and had the opportunity to hear a presentation from the nuclear commission about the history of all of this. It’s one of the most somber, heart breaking things I’ve ever heard. The Marshallese people deserve better.
In 1998 I asked the DOD at a city council meeting in Needles, ‘why were sending their nuclear waste trucks the long way through Needles instead of Vegas’ and they said there were less people with money. so they were more expendable. Then I ask why they wouldn’t use the caste trucks that are less likely to leak. They didn’t answer. It was money. They were trying to put a low level “cat litter” nuclear dump in endangered species habitat over an aquifer. Genius. Failed because of protests and lawsuits. They were trying to put a low level “cat litter” nuke dump on a fault line next the the Colorado river on the Mexico border. Genius. 🤞failed because of protest and lawsuits. They succeeded in opening a nuke dump where they put steel drums of transuranic and high level waste in rooms carved out of salt deposits. There isn’t a language that has lasted long enough to warn people in the future not to dig there. It will be ☢️ for tens of thousands of years. Just like the bikini atoll. Not to mention steel +🧂+ Oxygen = rust. Genius
Ahh yes ship it thousands of miles to a concrete crater right next to a thriving ocean ecosystem. Let's NOT burry it in the middle of the desert in Nevada
@@2jsanc681 That was the site of a nuclear explosion, the islands were a testing ground... all that life around it seemingly doing just fine, somehow, all these years later.
Thriving ocean? These people can't even eat the fish! The ocean is dying thanks to heat and the millions of metal barrels they dropped out by the Farallon Islands, in old abandoned salt mines in Germany, and god-only-knows where else. That sh!t's all over the World, now our great-great-great-great-great grandchildren gotta deal with it... if humans are still alive by then~
@@2jsanc681 "In 1982, a US government task force raised concern about a probable breach if a severe typhoon were to hit the island.[6] In 2013, a report by the US Department of Energy[7] found that the concrete dome had weathered with minor cracking of the structure.[8] However, the soil around the dome was found to be more contaminated than its contents, so a breach could not increase the radiation levels by any means. Because the cleaning operation in the 1970s only removed an estimated 0.8 percent of the total transuranic waste in the Enewetak atoll,[9]: 2 the soil and the lagoon water surrounding the structure now contain a higher level of radioactivity than the debris of the dome itself, so even in the event of a total collapse, the radiation dose delivered to the local resident population or marine environment should not change significantly. Concern primarily lies in the rapid tidal response to the height of the water beneath the debris pile, with the potential for contamination of the groundwater supply with radionuclides. One particular concern is that, in order to save costs, the original plan to line the porous bottom crater with concrete was abandoned.[3] Since the bottom of the crater consists of permeable soil, there is seawater inside the dome.[3] However, as the Department of Energy report stated, the released radionuclides will be very rapidly diluted and should not cause any elevated radioactive risk for the marine environment, compared to what is already experienced.[7] Leaking and breaching of the dome could however disperse plutonium, a radioactive element that is also a toxic heavy metal.[10][11] An investigative report by the Los Angeles Times in November 2019 reignited fears of the dome cracking and releasing radioactive material into the soil and surrounding water.[1][12] The DOE was directed by Congress to assess the condition of the structure and develop a repair plan during the first half of 2020.[13] The report was published in June 2020.[9] In June 2020, the US Department of Energy released a report stating that the dome is in no immediate danger of collapse or breach and that the radioactive material within is not expected to have any measurable adverse effect on the surrounding environment for the next twenty years."
They're not wearing any protection walking around barefoot on top of the big scary leaky dome, so it's presumably low enough that they don't seem all that much concerned about it
@@DrSulikSquirrel Your reply sounds a lot like a Koch Industries/CATO institute shill. Most people who develop cancers and die from radiation poisoning, don't know that they have been poisoned until it is too late.
My father was put on one of the islands after the natives were removed. He was an Air Force Weatherman. He was still radioactive when he returned home. The first born had birth defects he couldn’t survive. The government not only mistreated the Marshal Islanders but didn’t care about the vets as well. We fought the military thru the atomic veterans association but nothing ever came of it. He passed several years ago.
Adding insult to injury was finding out they shipped all the radioactive soil from the Nevada test sites and dumped them haphazardly in the lagoon, so they didnt just ruin the Marshall Islands with the nukes they tested there but brought their radioactive garbage from elsewhere and left it there

When nuclear bombs are mentioned, we all think about Hiroshima and Japan but we must also remember the Marshall islands and their people that were nuclear testing sites to 62 nuclear bombs that were stronger than the ones dropped on Japan. Edit: I understand there were also other nuclear test sites for other countries like USSR but in this case, USA nuked a foreign nation during occupation,
They weren't attacked, but they were forcibly moved away so the US could test the area... they destroyed a lot of life and land, but the remains of 'radiation' is minimal... even Hiroshima and Nagasaki have been rebuilt and repopulated.
@@deneseiB saying they are "stronger" than the ones dropped directly on people is a bad faith argument and a huge stretch of logic, buddy. I'm all for compensation, but hydrogen bombs have been proven to be far less radioactive than the ones used during ww2... nobody in this documentary got out a Geiger counter, toxicology report, etc. which these days are all extremely cheap. They even walked over bombed areas that weren't gated off because it totally makes sense to allow people to trespass onto radioactive land and have access to radioactive particulates and the capacity to build 'dirty bombs'. Please, that's ridiculous.
@@deneseiB Saying that h-bombs are "stronger" despite giving off less radiation and clearly weren't dropped *directly on people* is a false equivalency and bad faith argument.
As a Marshallese, we understand how this is a curse, but, we also know it should be a blessing. Because our country is small and doesn’t have a lot of natural resources, but because of compact of association, we are able to have the money to develop. But we shouldn’t forget how our own people have suffered. But God is with us.
The nuclear testing in Bikini Atoll was the inspiration for Bikini Bottom in SpongeBob SquarePants and the talking marine life a result of the radiation
My grandfather was at bikini atol building airports during operation crossroads and witnessed the baker explosion. He never wanted to talk about it and in the 70s developed colon cancer. He was awarded 100% veterans benefits and was also declared an atomic veteran. He passed in 2003.
My father was a lifer military physician. He retired as a captain after 30 years then took a job at UAB in Alabama doing health maintenance on islanders of the Kwagelein Atoll. He basically reported that the culture was utterly destroyed by the process of evacuating the atoll, exploding the bomb, then repopulating the atoll a short time later. Basically they were radiation guinea pigs. Each islander was given some manner of cash settlement, like ten grand, which they squandered over the course of a generation as their culture was unaccustomed to a cash economy, and in the process of blowing through the settlement money many of the survival techniques endemic to that culture for eons and ages were lost, as they were no longer practiced because everyone was "rich" and didn't have to fish and forage etc. Massive goiters were commonplace, as were other obvious signs of radiation poisoning. Life expectancy was greatly curtailed and birth defects were common. Then the money ran out and they were totally screwed. It was a criminal act, to be sure, but nobody prosecutes a big country like the USA, now do they?

I grew up in a small town in Johnson County Texas and in our community we had many Marshallese families which were the most humble and friendly people you could imagine. The United States conducted 67 nuclear and thermonuclear weapons tests in the Marshall Islands between 1946 and 1958, including the first H-bomb test in 1952. The tests took place at seven sites on Bikini Atoll, in the air, underwater, and at sea, and had a combined explosive power of about 77 megatons of TNT. The U.S. military also forcibly displaced thousands of Marshallese people to make way for the testing and other military activities.

He told us about how his buddy bought an ounce of weed and his mom shipped him increments every few weeks. We all asked “how’d you do that?” “It was the 70’s brother.” He also told us he got absolutely blackout drunk with his friends one Friday on top of this concrete block. "never letting atomic bombs be used again" As offensive weapons of war, sure. As defensive weapons to protect Earth from potentially devastating asteroid strikes, however, there is plenty of merit.
