As a Venetian, I wanted to thank you for the extremely high quality and unique video, in which I've found only one error: The population of Venice only started decreasing in the 1950s. I'm grateful of your video as I think the media portrayed the recent dramatic flood in a wrong and misinforming light, while you tried as best as you cold to explain the actual issues. A hug from all Venetians!

@@jypsridic if everybody reasoned like this, then our beautiful city would lose its main feature: being a decently-sized city built somewhere where you'd never expect to find it, no, I'm not going to do that. Surrendering before the start of the fight isn't what we Venetians want to do. Until the sea with its crashing waves will bring end to our wonderland, we won't abandon it. Instead, we shall try and find every available solution to stop these increasingly frequent floods, even if it will mean renouncing to our port.

@@jypsridic Thanks a lot. I highly hope that MOSE will work in the next few years or, if that isn't possible, that rising Venice up with underground pumping will be possible. The higher we rise the city, the quicker the sinking gets. Building up might save the city for some time but it will sink back in quicker than before. Venice's buildings are very multi-layered, all in one area, close to one another. They are all very heavy and built on a swamp. So mean while Venice is sinking, it's also drifting down wards.

I actually have an idea that it’s to extend the barrier islands to a complete wall over the lagoon an then build channels so that ships pass through. Now I know that this will cost a lot of money and will impact a lot the environment so I have another suggestion. That is to build an floater kind of structure in the gaps of the lagoon and the sea or maybe even let one gap so that boat pass through and this would probably cost very little and have no environment impact so maybe this one it’s the better of this to.
@soundphile988
@soundphile988 4 года назад
maybe build a big wall with 2 door passages were ships can enter the transition area where excess water will be pumped out in the transition area if ships want to enter the lagoon/ pumped in if they leave the lagoon. You could generate energy with the flow of water and even make use of tide energy generators, and save some of the Pumps energy consumption. To save the Lagoon environment you could Build a water exchangepump that would constantly let freshwater in and pump more "old water" out. + maybe some trash filtration systems. You could actually create artificial Currents in some of the "venice streets" this might lower the need for gas on the boats. Besides that I love Venice, have been there twice, and It's always awesome. I just love the athmosphere there. Dont visit venice in the main season, its run over by tourists, Visit it in autumn/winter before carnival and other festivals. Its calmer, the weather depending on the month can be still nice, when i was in early december, I got lucky with a sunny day, and directly in the sun it felt like 15 degrees celsius, so usually around that time its like 5-15 degrees(depending on the weather).
@GreenCowsGames

Maybe just fill up the land barrier, add a sluice for the harbor. Sewers for Venice (so they don't dump in the lagoon), call boyan slatt for the trash. And disregard the fauna, at least add a fish trap. Maybe add smth to inhibit algea, and interchange cooler sea water into the now warming lake rapidly. At least the rivers don't flow into the lagoon any more so eutrophication from that is already less

5:45 I have two complaints 1. It's a good thing you showed the article because that says 5.5 billion *euros*, not dollars/usd. Not only that, you mixed the currencies, citing usd for the original price. 2. We don't appear to be doing any adjusting for inflation, the original cost pre-dates the euro, and I can't figure out what the original cost was in today's dollars because to obtain that price you would take the original budget in Italian dollars, adjust it for inflation up until the euro was introduced, convert it into euro, adjust for the inflation of the euro, and then convert it to usd (as you did). But I don't know if that's what you did or not and/or what steps were/could've been skipped. edit: Okay, he read that part straight off of Wikipedia. He didn't mix currencies, he never converted to usd, he just said "dollars" instead of "euros" when it said "euros" on the screen and says "euros" for both costs on Wikipedia.

Do what Chicago did, and raise the entire city. While they raise each house, they can do some archeology on the past buildings.

As an Italian, I can say it's all a problem of our politics, we have a program called MOSE that has actually been built and on which we paid 1 billion dollars, but apparently there are problems between privates and the state, so it didn't start working and due to that, now maintenance is needed end due to the conflict between state and privates, we can't do it. ( I know he spoke about mose in the video yes)

Blue Lagoon? Knowing what happens beneath the water level one would expect Venice to be the Yellow-Brown Lagoon. Call it a unique eco-system. It most certainly is.

0:57 why does the chart only go back to 1870? The city is nearly 1000 years old! Official records go back to at least the late 1500's. This graph is skewed.

Frack the ground, use the pump equipment in the US idled to drill and raise the ground. GPS actually shows the ground comes up around the pad when you frack, it drops back down when you stop. Fill the void with plastic waste. Solve 2 problems at once.

Just build it higher. The Venetians have been doing it for centuries so it's culturally insensitive to not do that.

cut off water to areas and perform massive draining operations like the dutch. Well also creating support canals that allow the heavy transport ships to get in and out. You will fuck things up, but better than letting things get lost. And plus in doing so you can make more artificial controlled factors to effect the water levels. So in mind mind it's better to spend the money on the expensive surgery, instead of constantly by band aids to patch up something you can't easily stop.
