How VHS Showed Us The Horror of Video Culture

Somehow I feel like watching horror movies on VHS was always scarier than DVDs or streaming platforms. It always felt eerie having the film physically present with you, like if you cracked the tape open there'd be something in there with it

That opening scene with the girl being assaulted will always be shocking to me. Not only for the footage itself but the fact that this happens and will happen to someone and that there are people who would commit these acts without remorse disgusts me

I went into this movie blind, and was NOT ready for the first short film to escalate so quickly. Great movie, the sequel isn't bad either!

Honest to god this really did happen, feel free to get a chuckle out of my story One night I was in the house by myself and watching vhs 2 by myself. I thought I heard something outside I peaked out the window and scared myself with my own reflection 😆😂🤣

The winged succubus scene made me audibly gasp in the cinema; it was such a cool idea

Not gonna lie, my favorite part was calling it a "thirsty" movie. I mean you're not wrong, like at all, but it gave me a good chuckle.

The cult movie in the second VHS was next level unsettling. Legit the only movie to ever give me that “chased up the stairs” feeling.

Not a bad little film, but I prefer the second one. The crazy Indonesian cult one by Gareth Evans is a particular stand out.

10-31-98 makes me think of the "knight in shining armor" complex; men 'saving' women only to be punished for intervening. Not to mention they didn't take the hint they weren't meant to be there.

The first time i watched this movie, i was smoking some cheap pot and drinking vodka. By the time i watched the one with the stalker girl, i greened out completely and ended up throwing up. I had that image in my head for days... It was pretty fun.

The throat cutting scene in Second Honeymoon legitimately makes me feel queasy. The snapping sound of the tendons and such was so well done that it was gross. It's almost on par with the stabbing scene from Zodiac.

There's something to love from each VHS film, big fan of the franchise. Safe Haven from part 2 is one of the best horror segments ever made.

"He's a prick who doesn't trust her" Except he's absolutely correct in all of his assumptions and even though he's got the exact culprit wrong, it not being her, it is still completely tied to her and is entirely her fault.

I personally felt VHS 2 was a rare, better than the first movie.

7:15 this was honestly the most disturbing one. The way she just stabbed the guy while he slept along with the reveal led to honestly the most fucked up short as it was the most grounded.

7:25 I don't see how the boyfriend in Second Honeymoon was "exposed" when his suspicions about his girlfriend were justified with his murder. If that was the message we are supposed to take from that story then it's bit muddled.

LOVE this movie. The creepiest part was the unstated but all too obvious conceit of the framing story that there is some underground web of people trading tapes of real paranormal incidents, purposely keeping them from being digitized and off the internet for extra levels of secrecy. It makes the shorts feel that much more real and visceral in the watching.

What a great way to tell stories. Although some of them are weak, they saved the best one for last by Radio Silence. Although I prefer VHS 2 more, VHS was a good introduction.

This is funny: I discovered your channel a couple of days ago and watched a lot of your videos the past days, I searched unsuccessfully your retrospective about this particular movie vhs. Now it's here. Thx a lot. I tend to watch retrospectives about horror movies much more than watching the specific movies on my own.

The thing that gets me about the V/H/S movies is maybe something particular to me but it's the helplessness. We're watching these events on tape...but that means they've already happened. I can't intervene in anyway. The outcome is already determined. That always makes me queasy.

The VHS series is one of the more underrated series in modern horror. Anytime I get the chance to watch them with people I take it. Really unique series. Second one is probably my favorite.

I'll always love the alternate ending to October 31, 1998 because they just brush it off so perfectly.

I believe outside of Cloverfield & Quarentine, VHS gave the “found footage” style of film more grit. After that , ppl ran it into the ground

Kinda like (What a Cartoons) back in the 90's without that we wouldn't have family guy and many other great cartoons. Yes I know this horror but I'm a fan of great horror and animation 🙄.

10/31/98 is my absolute favorite from V/H/S 1. I never saw “The Sick Thing That Happened To Emily” that way. Now I need to go back and rewatch it. That’s interesting.

I am a huge fan and I'd love to see you talk about a film like that because it's in of my favorite movies and you're one of my favorite youtube channels along with being my favorite horror related channel, a close second being dead meat. I love the detail you go into and the appeal of your videos for me is impeccable. I'll always remember this. I saw it when I went to Europe for the first time (from the U.S.) and it was the realest film I had seen. The violence and nudity were bounds beyond what I had seen before. The experience of sitting at a bus stop in the rain, replaying over and over what I saw will live with me.

I think that Southbound is everything that V/H/S wanted to be, just better.
