It seems that in this context the word "virtue" actually includes everything in the Gradual Training (anupubbasikkhā, MN 107) up until the point where one can actually sit down (in solitude of course) and "meditate" rightly. So perhaps one good way to summarize would be that one needs to upgrade one's definition of sīla or virtue beyond the common "observance of a set of rules" into "not performing unwholesome actions" (which cannot occur unconsciously). Not upgrading that definition, or even not recollecting it sufficiently, creates a big gap between sīla and samādhi. Hence, even someone who does keep the precepts or even monastic rules, and who believes their virtue is already complete to that degree while it isn't, would still feel a need to try to "fabricate" samādhi instead (bridge the gap), whether it be in the coarse manner of techniques or not.

I have become obsessive with learning more and practicing virtue. I'm finding this to be true myself. Dana and Sila is a reward in and of itself. I feel so happy doing it. Hopefully I will have enough joy to easily fall into deep samadhi.

@@jojoanimations3 samadhi is not something you fall into or get absorbed into. samadhi is composure and clarity as a direct consequence of sense restraint. it is within this samadhi where investigation on the nature of your existence and the "things" that constitute it (feeling, perception, etc) can be discerned to result in penetrative insight that frees you from suffering (and the search for freedom in the first place).

Rare to find an explanation as clear as this. Every cell of my body wants to pay homage to Buddha, Dhamma, Sangha and my own Sila. Thank you Bhante! Anumodana 🙏🏽

The sutta: Reverend Sāriputta, in this teaching and training, what is hard to do?” “Going forth, is hard to do in this teaching and training.” “But what’s hard to do for someone who has gone forth?” “When you’ve gone forth it’s hard to be satisfied.” “But what’s hard to do for someone who is satisfied?” “When you’re satisfied, it’s hard to practice in line with the teaching.” “But if a mendicant practices in line with the teaching, will it take them long to become a perfected one?” “It wont take them long.” -Sn38.16

The truth hurts - if only the practice of Buddhism were just a wonderful experience of joy and bliss, as it's been sold in recent years. We would love to believe that there is some mystical shortcut that we can all take to self-mastery and discipline

Sadhu! Dear Bhantes, I have for some time been wishing and hoping that the Ven. Bhantes might speak on walking meditation, I find that it relates to this very topic almost to the extreme in the sense that, if there is no intention to move the foot then one simply does not go anywhere (before idleness sets in and quite frightingly carries one away from the spot). Walking meditation as I understand it, forces us to be completely honest while sometimes too much focus on sitting can prevent us, as it has certain "blind-spots" which walking meditation does not. And what I mean by blind-spots is, that to balance concentration it is done with effort and wisdom is balanced with confidence- it is easy to get stuck without knowing how to balance these and the practice of being well-balanced itself, when reflecting one is able to find out all impurities as (right) mindfulness is the fifth factor, right mindfulness can not be done without complete honesty. Meaning, that when one is not confident, one knows at that time there is little confidence. Thank you!

Thank you, sir. may I ask if you could help me clear my wrong view? What is the difference between just asking a question regarding the current state vs discerning the peripheral?

Bhante, is unpleasant feeling the same as the feeling of anger? And if so, should I patiently endure the angry feeling (trying not to act out of it) or should I try to put it out like fire on my head? Or is the angry feeling means I have already acted out of annoyance with my mind? I presume unpleasant feeling and anger are two different things, but I'm a bit confused. Thank you!
@HillsideHermitage

They are two different things. Anger is based upon an unpleasant feeling that is being resisted. That resistance makes people see others as the REASON for their displeasure, and that's what anger is. If you don't resist the discomfort INTERNALLY, nothing externally will be blamed or seen as a problem. So in order to cease to resist the unpleasant feeling you need to first stop acting out of that feeling and anger that is simultaneously present with it. And that's how you "put it out like fire on your head" - by not acting out of it, you withdraw the oxygen needed for burning, and the fire will have to go out. Or - by not adding more fuel to the fire, the fire will have to burn out. Anger (upon-the-feeling-of-discomfort-that-you-resist) does not mean you already acted out. Just means the state of mind that is currently present, that needs to be known and endured as such. "He knows (his) angry mind AS angry mind".

@@HillsideHermitage Bhante, this is amazing, it has put everything into place. I was mistaking anger AS the unpleasant feeling, but in truth, it turns out, I am reacting to unpleasant feeling SO fast, that they looked like the same phenomena. This in turn, led me to believe that anger must be endured (although in a way, it should be endured as to put it out), so in fact, we should endure the unpleasant feeling and not react to it and this will not give any oxygen for the anger to arise in the first place. Thank you!

Please find fault in this statement; Suffering is like a fire that brings things to the surface, if for example you are refining metals like gold, fire is used to bring the dross or impure metals to the surface. Suffering brings up your suppressed or repressed thoughts and feelings so that you might have the opportunity to correct your past decision to repress them. when these guests arrive ( thoughts and or feelings)or surface you now can acknowledge and accept them and welcome them with loving kindness and hospitality even your worst enemy ( thought or feeling), embracing them for a short time as you become empathetic with them / your thoughts and feelings and observing them as to the reason for them being in your home ( heart) and letting them remain for as long as they / you require, then they go and you are left more refined thereby. Incidentally suffering produces patience and patience character and character hope and it is the fire that burns away all that is false so that what is TRUE IS REVEALED.
