The end of the 30-year independence campaign in the Indonesian province of Aceh is regarded as one of the great successes of modern diplomacy and conflict resolution. The dispute, which had cost many thousands of lives, is a rare example of a secessionist campaign that was successfully solved through a negotiated settlement that kept the territory within the 'parent' state. In this video, I explore the dispute and explain the tragic event that led to its resolution.
Welcome to Independent Thinking. A channel dedicated to international relations, independence disputes, secession and the origins of countries.
Armed campaigns for independence rarely end in success. Usually, if a territory is lucky, the best it can often hope for is de facto statehood. More often than not, separatist conflicts end in defeat for the insurgents. Occasionally, however, a comprehensive peace agreement is reached that allows the insurgents to lay down their arms. One of the most successful such examples in recent years concerns the Free Aceh Movement (GAM), which waged a 30-year campaign for an independent Acehnese state. However, in 2005, it instead reached an agreement with the Government of Indonesia for extensive autonomy for the province. So, how did this happen? As I show, while international diplomacy played a role, the conflict was actually resolved as a result of forces behind the control of the parties that made the continuation of the uprising all but impossible.

Indonesia is a huge and diverse country that offers so many interesting lessons for those interested in statehood and secession. In this video, I wanted to take a look at one of the rare examples of a secessionist dispute that was successfully resolved by integrating separatist forces back into the parent state. As ever, do let me know in the comments below if there are any other cases that you would like me to look at. Thanks for watching. If you found this video useful, please do consider giving it a 'Like' and sharing it with others who might be interested. And do all consider subscribing. It helps the channel to grow! Finally ☺️☺️☺️☺️☺️ it’s about time that you’re covering the Southeast Asian region (you do recognize me right?) If you have more time, can you please cover the other secessionist groups from the region (per country of course) and the history behind their desire to separate itself from their parent state? Their many reasons usually goes along by saying-that they don’t have or were not given a VOICE for their concerns to be heard because capital’s wants (representatives from the separatist region are lacking even in my home country) in the central government (their concerns/needs are being swept aside or treated as an afterthought) Or that when it comes to the separatist region’s very basic needs, the response from the central government is too slow The point is, is that the secessionist problems of every country have to be resolved peacefully (even if I am not from the secessionist region I understand that they mostly wanted a better life for their families and children 👶) including my own country’s secessionist problem which is in the form of the Moro Conflict in Mindanao that President Duterte is trying to resolve (the first Philippine President from Mindanao-Davao region)

❤❤salem aneuk nanggrau❤❤ The Kingdom of Aceh on the northern tip of Sumatra has always been a very strong and influential sultanate in Southeast Asia since the world has known Aceh. The golden peak of Aceh was under the rule of Sultan Iskandar Muda in the 17th century where, the Kingdom of Aceh expanded its influence almost throughout the whole of Southeast Asia. Aceh had strong diplomatic and trading relations with the international world, including the Kingdom of Holland way before the bloody colonial war broke out between the two nations. The Sultan of Aceh sent an Acehnese ambassador Tuanku Abdul Hamid, who died in Holland and was begraved at the church premise in Middlesburg, in the Netherlands. On 26 March 1873, the Kingdom of Holland officially declared war upon the Kingdom of Aceh. The aftermath of this declaration was widely reported around the globe by international newspapers and even created debates in government parliaments both in Holland and Great Britain that had diplomatic relations with the Sultan of Aceh. Today, after 148 years, the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) and the loyal Acehnese community commemorate this historic and glamourous day. The declaration of war is an official recognition of sovereignty and independence of Aceh. It was on this legal basis that GAM started their liberation struggle on 4 December 1976, whereby more than 30,000 innocent Acehenese and som 200 000 died during the tsunami. In the process, GAM and the Acehnese have always maintained our committment until today. The catastrophe was a catalyst that started the peace talks between GAM and GoI that ended the 30 years armed conflict with the signing of the peace accord, The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed on 15 August 2005 in Helsinki, Finland. Since then, GAM has adhered and respect the MoU but unfortunately, most of the points agreed have not been fully implemented while some crucial points are still on paper. In fact new regulations have been passed to decapitate the MoU. Many Acehnese are losing their patience and confidence of the peace process. The main issue of conflict in Aceh is political, a decolonization process that has never been done and the status of Aceh that was never part of the Netherlands East Indies. It is also the struggle for the right of determinantion of a decolonised people under international law. We strongly believe and call upon the Kingdom of Netherlands, with the support of the international community, to sign an end to the Declaration of War upon Aceh, as has been praticed after the Second World War. Thus eternal peace and stability is maintained in Aceh and the region of Southeast Asia.

Thank you for making this video! As an Acehnese i can appreciate the effort in making this video about one of the darkest chapters of Indonesian and Acehnese history. Although a lot of the MoU agreements has not yet been realized, the peace that exist today has allowed for extensive rebuilding efforts following the insurgency and the natural disasters. I look forward for the future!

Interesting video, I’m part Indonesian from North Sulawesi province and we have a small but sizable separatist movement. This is actually for the exact opposite of Aceh, as North Sulawesi is a largely Christian and wants to separate if Indonesia becomes a Islamist nation. Anyway this video is very interesting! 👍

Thank you so much. That is fascinating. I must look into it. Indonesia is such an interesting country in so many ways. Funnily enough, when I originally went to university I applied to do Politics with Indonesian (seriously), but then became fascinated in SE Europe when my family moved to Cyprus. But I’ve always maintained an interest in SE Asia.

Born and raised in Aceh, your video is on point. part of the reason dispute came to an end was after the tsunami, international starting to recognizing Aceh problem and it became mainstream? there were lots of international aids and media came here. I remember back then, thousands of United states navy and marines pouring my city to help. with that, international community starting to pressurize Indonesian government to end the dispute. and finally we come to a long awaited peace. sadly, although peace has arrive, there are still many unresolved human rights-crime. i saw Indonesian military cut a boys head because the military were looking for his father and couldnt find him, so they killed his son instead. atlease we live in peace now. great video anyway. love it from Aceh.

Thank you so much. It is always really great to hear from people directly involved in the cases I explore. It is often the case that once the peace agreement has been done and the world’s media go home there are elements of the agreement that don’t get implemented and aspects of the conflict that get quietly pushed away from public view. I really should look at this aspect of conflict. In the meantime, thanks for the comment and very best regards from London.

Thx for doing this. 13 mins seems too quick but you manage to distilled a lot of things in a very approachable way. Aceh right now is supersafe.. I hiked the Leuser highlands (the traditional hideout for the insurgency back in the day) with ex-GAM fighters as my guides a few times already. The ex fighters are just like any other human, few are corrupt but most are humble yet proud people. And Acehnese cuisines...wow.. Hands down one of the best in the world. I sometime joke that it would be a massive loss for Indonesia just because they would lose an array of delicious foods, from the coast to Tano Gayo and Alas-Kluet.

Of the 38 provinces in Indonesia, Aceh is considered the most autonomous province. Aceh has a devolved parliament with its own local political parties (no other province in Indonesia has its own political party). Aceh is also the only province in Indonesia that applies sharia law, such as caning for unmarried couples, alcohol, etc. One of my teachers at my school back then was Acehnese and he was very happy to live in my province in South Kalimantan because he said we had cinemas. There were no cinemas in Aceh, the existing cinemas were burned to the ground after the peace agreement because they were considered satanic and contrary to Islamic laws.

I think we can discuss about this now. There is unfinished business here on the Helsinki peace agreement after 15 years in peace between Aceh and Indonesia. It can triggers new conflict again if the both sides have no sincere intention. The worst happened in the past in the same situation after MoU Lamtéh in 1957.

30years of political instability and civil unrest has cause Aceh fair struggle to recover economically and socially. In addition, the newly elected govt seems to be so disruptive and bring Aceh Development nowhere. As an Acehnese who were born and grew up in Aceh, I feel like at the end the citizens are the one who pay all the cost. Even after the conflict it seems like it never end. Despite Aceh is rangked as the 5th highest provincial budget but the poverty and unemployment still on the button 6th among other Indonesian provinces. There might lots of variables to be solved in order to make Aceh great again. But I don’t see that will happen even after more than 15 years of peace. Thanks for the review tho it’s for the academic purpose. 13 minutes seems not enough to highlight the 30years of civil unrest in Aceh. My suggestion maybe you can make video about any other part of the world that recover and gain their economic prosperity after the civil war. So, we can learn from those best practices.

No, that's an idea that could damage Indonesian sovereignty because we have to remember that many of Indonesia's national heroes are from Aceh

Before there was Indonesia, Aceh was sovereign after Aceh helped Java, then Java betrayed Aceh and slaughtered the Acehnese nation until now the natural products of Aceh were in the colonies and the people were colonized by Java,

May I ask, how did the Sumatran Sultans vanished?

@@IcefPr. The communist group during the Indonesian Independence time kill all of them. There are only three prominent monarchs that survive until now in Indonesia. The Sultan of Yogyakarta, the King of Cirebon, and 'proclaimed' Sultan of Tidore.

Indonesia shouldn't help Aceh when they got hit by tsunami then. They pour a lot of money to help Aceh recover from that disaster.

All over Indonesia were hand-in-hand spontaneously organizing aid when tsunami struck Aceh. I was one of them coordinating aids to Meulaboh when it was not accesible, one of my friends an anasthesist in Jakarta with his team of doctors voluntarily flew to Aceh the second day of tsunami. I remember how the whole Indonesia acted in many ways to help Aceh at that time. That I think what many Acehneses also saw which made it easier for integration.
