Here are the links of what I was talking about in the video regarding the historical sources citing that Joseph used BOTH a seer stone AND other historical sources citing that he used the U&T as well as a BOM translation timeline:
Links:
Joseph used a seer stone to translate: www.ldsscriptureteachings.org... (www.ldsscriptureteachings.org...)
Joseph used a Urim and Thummim: www.ldsscriptureteachings.org... (www.ldsscriptureteachings.org...)
Here is a timeline of the translation process:
www.ldsscriptureteachings.org... (www.ldsscriptureteachings.org...)
In this episode of the "Ask the Experts Interview Series" the Paul brothers interview Mike Day about the extensive research and study he has done on the method and timeline of the translation of The Book of Mormon. We also dive into the issues face by Millennial Church members, why authenticity in faith matters, how the bible was put together, and much much more.
Mike is a PHD candidate and he specializes in Ancient Greek, Hebrew and Old Testament studies. He also has an amazing podcast of his own where he provides in depth studies each week of Come Follow Me alongside his colleague Bryce Dunford.
The Stick of Joseph RU-vid channel seeks to make the Book of Mormon accessible to all ages by making engaging, entertaining and informative content.

The seer stone seems to be quite controversial to many of you. Here is a statement from Mike and his sources! None of us saw the translation process. I do not know how it was done as I (Mike Day) was not there. But Emma Smith, William Smith, David Whitmer, and Martin Harris testified that Joseph used the stone. You can read their accounts here: www.ldsscriptureteachings.org/2015/08/joseph-smith-translated-the-book-of-mormon-with-a-seerstone/ The Paul brothers posted it in the description, but just in case you missed it. I also share how there were several witnesses that testified that Joseph used the Urim and Thummim as well. You can see my collection of witness statements (Joseph, Martin Harris, Oliver Cowdery, and David Whitmer) regarding this here: www.ldsscriptureteachings.org/2015/08/joseph-smith-translated-the-plates-with-the-urim-and-thummim/ Again, the Paul brothers posted this in the description. The evidence is all there. But what am I doing? I am trying to see how these stories worked together based on witness testimony, and we are all doing our best. But at the end of the day, I do not know. I wasn’t alive then. I put McConkie and Ostler’s rebuttal in the article and hyperlinked it as well. Here is their article: www.ldsscriptureteachings.org/2021/01/the-process-of-translation/ As to "credible sources," I guess it all comes down to what we do with Emma Smith's statement as well as David Whitmer, Martin Harris, and William Smith. We (members of the Church) certainly quote them extensively when their testimonies say what we want them to say. I am just saying that they did make these statements.

Well said. I know some "fringe" writers like John Neville (he's out there, let's be honest) seem to abhor the idea that the seer stone was used. Not sure why it's such an issue to so many. It was translated however it was translated. I don't care about the method so much as the end product. Thanks guys.

It's not a problem when someone (Neville, May, Stoddard) has a different opinion, but when their gospel hobby becomes an article of faith for their version of the "truth", I think they have a problem.

I love these topics because my Great-Great-Great Grandmother was there when they were translating the plates. Her Name was Sarah Heller Conrad Bunnell. She was the house keeper for the Whitmer family and whenever Joseph and Oliver would come down from translating the plates she related a story of what they looked like when the would come down, she said, "they looked so exceedingly white and strange". Please look her up. She is an amazing lady and was true to what she saw all of her days. Thanks

If you’re interested in confirming what the truth is, you should start with Joseph Smith’s translation of Isaiah and how it doesn’t match the complete copy we’ve found which predates Nephi’s prophesied corruption, establishing without doubt that Joseph Smith’s version is a fabrication.

Joseph Smith had the Urim and Thummim in April of 1829. Look at D&C 7. He had the Interpreters after the Lost 116 pages. Jonathan Neville has a wonderful book called A MAN THAT CAN TRANSLATE: JOSEPH SMITH AND THE NEPHITE INTERPRETERS. He also wrote a book called Letter VII which gives Oliver Cowdery's experience. Emma Smith only told the Seer stone story AFTER Joseph was dead and after Whitmer and William Smith began to tell the stone in the hat story. You guys should interview Hannah Stoddard from the Joseph Smith Foundation.

I was going to say the same thing, but had a feeling to check if anyone else has said it. They should have Hannah Stoddard on their show. The urum and thummim AND seer stone both served the same function - a medium for translation by the power of God. Whether he used one, the other, or both - it doesn’t matter. It’s what came out of the translation that is our focus: The Book of Mormon.

Everyone needs to read the book by James E. Lucas and Jonathan Neville called By Means of the Urim and Thummim. Richard Bushman says, "All readers who take the translation seriously must recon with this book." You'll get a clearer picture that the plates, the Book of Mormon was translated with the Urim and Thummim, not dictated with a stone.

[32] When Cowdery returned to the Church in 1848, he declared that he “wrote with my own pen the intire book of mormon (Save a few pages) as it fell from the Lips of the prophet.” Cowdery further explained, “As he translated it by the gift and power of god, By means of the urum and thummim, or as it is called by that book holy Interperters. I beheld with my eyes. And handled with my hands the gold plates from which it was translated. I also beheld the Interperters.” Focusing upon his experiences while they translated, he emphatically stated, “That book [The Book of Mormon] is true.” Reuben Miller, journal, October 21, 1848, Church History Library

All first hand accounts of Joseph and Oliver are consistent with the translation being through the urim and thumim. All references to the SITH are from others who had falling away with Joseph or commented on this year's after Joseph's death. I really doubt that after losing the 116 pp Joseph would have tried to do things in any other way but by the means which Moroni had instructed him - using the plates and the urim and thumim.

Thanks for this very interesting interview! This is the first I've heard from Mike Day.. what an amazing guy :) One thought just came to me after watching this, and I'm sure that others have thought of this same idea before: The plates that Joseph got from Moroni must have been the same size (x/y dimensions) as the small plates of Nephi, since the small plates were included, unedited, as is, by Mormon. This implies that Mormon's abridgement of the large plates must also have been the same size as the small plates in order to make them all fit together neatly without some pages/portions sticking out relative to others. The same goes for the sealed portion. Perhaps Mormon purposely made the abridged plates smaller in x/y dimensions because he foresaw that his son Moroni would have to carry them around for a while before burying them, and he probably also gave him enough blank pages to fill in with his own revelations/history, giving him just enough that he could still carry around but not so much that it would be too heavy :) Also, perhaps Nephi's small plates were made smaller in dimension originally, for similar reasons, with the anticipation that they would have to be carried around more than larger plates due to their increased importance (doctrinally, rather than historically) to be part of the portions that were to 'speak from the dust' in the latter days.
@jonathanray7931
@jonathanray7931 11 месяцев назад
@philandrews2860 I have learned the x/y portion sizes argument before in about my late 20s-early 30s and I am now 46 putting me in Gen X. Anyway I have always had a hard time picturing that to be the case, that some plates were smaller and others larger in size (as in length, width, breadth) compared to each other. It has never quite made any sense to me. How I think of it is that the small plates are small or few in number and the large plates are large or many in number (quantity or amount) when compared to each other even though the small plates were said to be "light in heft" and the large plates to be "heavy". But, again, their individual hefts could have been due partly to the number of pages each have. To me, that makes much more sense because it seems more consistent with the descriptions and depictions of the plates. But that comparison could not be made by the Prophet Joseph Smith Jr until he received both sets and realized the significant difference in the number of pages of each set. And if I recall the history correctly, he received the small plates first and then the large plates like one to three weeks later. I think. Idk. I could very well be wrong about that and am probably just dreaming all of that up. Anyway it seems like also one of the things Moroni told Joseph when he received the small plates was something like "These are the plates of Nephi which are the small plates. In a little while I will deliver you the plates of my father Mormon, which are the large plates and they are large as to the number of the leafs in them." Something like that but I can't recall exactly because it has been too long since I have studied the scriptures and the History of the Church. Anyway please don't quote me on any of that and take it all with a thousand grains of salt but I had this thought(?) remembrance(?) come to me and it seems significant enough to share. Hhmmm, Idk. I will have to study up on that point to (hopefully) get the accurate history on it Anyway God bless you and yours and take care.

Joseph affirmed that he “translated from the plates,” and that he used the Urim and Thummim to do so. After the loss of the 116 pages by Martin Harris, both the plates and the Urim and Thummim were taken from him. Without the Urim and Thummim he could not translate. During this period Joseph made a short visit to his parents in Manchester, New York, and then returned again to Pennsylvania. “Immediately after my return home,” he recounted, “I was walking out a little distance, when, behold, the former heavenly messenger appeared and handed to me the Urim and Thummim again for it had been taken from me in consequence of my having wearied the Lord in asking for the privilege of letting Martin Harris take the writings, which he lost by transgression and I inquired of the Lord through it, and obtained the following [section 3]” (Smith, History of the Church, 1:21-22)

@@icecreamladydriver1606 what would happen if he was using the stone also? The stone wasn’t given to Joseph, he found it, which is why it wasn’t taken. Or was it? Crazy stuff. I love that he was able to use the gift and power of god to use several different tools to “translate” what is now The Book of Mormon! It’s all great either way.

Well, David Whitmer said the U&T was not returned and that he used the seer stone after that. Martin Harris replaced the stone in the hat during the translation. Emma would've been the scribe before Oliver got into the picture, and she described the translation using the rock and the hat. Just because Joseph said something doesn't make it true.

Steven, you are correct. The only instrument of translation was the Urim and Thummim. Those who claim that after the lost 116 pages incident, Joseph never got the U&T back and so he had to resort to the seer stone in a hat for the translation is a big lie. Eight sections of the Doctrine and Covenants were revelations given through the Urim and Thummim. Section 3, July 1828, Harmony Section 6 & 7, April 1829, Harmony Section 11, May 1829, Harmony Section 14, 15, 16, 17, June 1829, Fayette The events of the Book of Mormon happened in ancient America and the translation was done only by the Urim and Thummim. Stop wasting time and money looking in other places and promoting a false translation method! There is a mountain of evidence if you take the time to look.

I learned about the translation order from the introduction to Royal Skousen's edition of the original text. Keeping that in mind while I read has been enlightening. I had not noticed that about Moroni wrapping up by quoting the small plates authors. I like the comparison to rap; it reminds me of jazz. For a long time I've called Jacob's sermons jazz solos. The Book of Mormon is richer and I am ever more convinced of its truth the more I notice and account for the mortal limitations of its authors.

Am I mistaken in saying that the issue with "deutero Isaiah" comes down to the fact that Isaiah made a number of prophecies which came me to pass and secular scholars don't believe in the idea of prophecy, therefore those prophecies must have been written after the fact? Am I oversimplifying or is there something I'm missing?

@Stick of Joseph When you guys were talking about the lost/stolen 116 pages of the Book of Lehi, that reminded me of the passage somewhere in either 1 or 2 Nephi where Nephi writes something like "... and the Lord wanted I, Nephi, to write again what my father had already written in his book. And I inquired of the Lord as to why he wanted me to do that and the Lord said to me not to worry about why he wanted me to write again the writings of my father other than it was wisdom in him that I should do it. So I, Nephi, to be obedient to the Lord, did write again the writings of my father because the Lord had commanded me to and I do not know the reason why." It is something like that. Do any of you know what passage I am talking about? I have not been in the scriptures for years now so I am just going off of the top of my head but that is what I recollect learning a very long time ago. And I am wondering how germain to your discussion it might be!! Thanks. God bless you all and all of yours and take care.

Great video, gentlemen! I'm not LDS but I've been studying the faith for over 40 years. I have a serious question (not trying to attack or argue) regarding the time it took to write the BoM. It was mentioned several times in the video how quickly Joseph wrote the BoM and how that proves he couldn't have created the story himself. It's important to remember that he announced the visit from Moroni in 1823 telling him about the plates, but he didn't take possession of the plates until exactly 4 years later (1827). Couldn't he have used those 4 years to research, outline, and prepare the story, so that when he did the translating in 1828 and 1829, it appeared to be done very quickly??

That is well understood that he could have spent years of his life making it up. But the miraculous thing was him dictating it non stop with no source notes. Unless cowdery, whither and Harris were in on it, it seems crazy to think that the whole thing would have been dictated from memory with the precision and complex timeline it has.
@ozymandias6743
@ozymandias6743 11 месяцев назад
Yes, of course he could have. Also, he and Oliver took their sweet time delivering the foolscap paper manuscript to the printer... page by handwritten page, even though printer EB Grandin said they could save time l printing if Joseph simply delivered the whole manuscript at once. Why did he deliver it page by page? Maybe because he was still putting the finer points on the story. Or maybe God had a mysterious purpose behind the apparent ruse. Grandin's assistant wrote that there were multiple handwriting styles in the pages, which doesn't make sense since the testimony of the eye witnesses of the book of Mormon is that after the 116 pages were lost, only OC scribed. Perhaps God is playing a bunch of games with us... Or perhaps Joseph assembled the Book of Mormon from available sources and his own charismatic storytelling, then slowly dictated it to a scribe.

Hi. First off I want to say I love these videos and I first saw your channel on a Wayne May video. Secondly I want to tell you that I’m in my 50s, but I am young at heart and I also embrace authenticity. To be completely honest, one of the reasons why I fell away from the church many years ago is because I felt that there was a lot of fake emotion and That the sincerity of heart was just not there. It was like listening to people read from a script….I know this church is true… Etc. ad nauseam. after living a life of sin and worldliness, I finally got tired of it all and when I was at the bottom of where I thought the barrel was, I started to go back to church. So many people have been praying for me for so long, and finally I looked and turned my head back towards the Lord and stopped being stiffnecked. That’s what that phrase means. By the way. Stephen act mean stubborn and not listening and refusing to turn your head when the Lord calls you. So I heard him call me finally, and I came back. I was kicked out of the church many years ago because of my bad behavior and sinful nature. But I have finally started to read the book of Mormon and I mean really read it with an open heart and open mind and I have been so moved so many times to read the stories of these people and I can feel their anguish and their love, and their grief and their anger and their strength, and it is so real to me for the first time in my life. this may surprise you to hear this, but I have been to a couple of places in North America where book of Mormon events took place. I haven’t felt the spirit at one of those places and that is what first convinced me I needed to really read the whole book of Mormon. I’m not reading it in order I’m skipping around a little bit and following my heart. I’m seeing all the book of Mormon videos put up by the church and that story is amazing. I’ve looked at some of the places where you guys have visited already and I know for sure that these places are real and that Lehigh and his wife and sons did in fact, live in the place that has been talked about Recently. I’ve looked into a lot of things in the last few months in the last few years. I know that I have three main missions to accomplish while I’m on earth. One of them involves learning everything I can about all the places that the book of Mormon and the Bible took place because this knowledge would be crucial and one of my missions. I didn’t get to go on a mission when I was young because I was living a life of sin. So I’m going to make it up to the Lord by spending the rest of my life doing everything I can. I have to raise my children first, then I will take care of the other two things. I enjoy your show, and you would be surprised, really surprised to know how much evidence there really is of the presence of the Nephites and the Lamanites on the North American continent. If you really want to find out where a lot of things are located, you need to head up into the Appalachian mountains. All the best to you guys and I wish you luck and much success in your future endeavors to complete the stick of Joseph project.

Great podcast guys. I am liking this new generation of thinkers. My journey has taken me out of the corporate Utah church structure, but I haven't changed my mind about the Book of Mormon or Joseph Smith Jr. or the revelations he received except to compare them first to Torah. I also freely and openly retain my friends of the church and love my family members with no differences except through an older man's lens. What I have acquired since includes coming to know our RLDS Cousins who are descended from Joseph in Missouri, and the multitudes coming to the Hebrew roots Messianic movement. I don't think Mormons are very much aware of these worldwide developments, because as Mormons we were given such an important head start with our understanding: we do not replace the Jews, but we stand side by side with them. This is huge. Your theory about the Brass Plates really struck me as, "hmm... what it?" Our Hebrew New Testament Gospels project has obtained gold and lead plates from the 2nd temple that memorializes Hebrew alphabets from Solomon to Judas Maccabees which is approx centered at 600 BC. The Hebrew is fascinating that is written on them. Some day you'll have to introduce me to Mike Day. I must say, the LDS youth today are much better taught than we were. -- Shalom young brothers.

I was very interested in the section about the schism in Judaism and the redactions etc. in the texts of the Old Testament, removing references to the corporeal nature of God. Some years ago, I heard someone talk about the Septuagint and changes made in the Greek translation. That discussion sounded a lot like this one. Do you have a short list of references where I can study more on this subject? The reference to the “Great and Abominable Church” in the Book of Mormon has always been a bit problematic. One might think we are pointing fingers at some specific organization or denomination that has existed since the time of Christ. However, the discussion I heard earlier helped me to realize that that “church” has been at work opposing the Doctrine of Christ from the very beginning, not just since the time Christ established his Church on the earth. I wouldn’t mind taking Mike’s Old Testament class a couple of times.
