While I don't doubt chemical signals are involved, I feel like the research method is not robust enough, especially since the last study was contradictory. In my experience: I've raised 2 batches of angel fish. My first batch was 100% peaceful as juveniles until about 9 months later when they became adults. The second batch I've had for about a month now, also juveniles, and they fight sooo much. Meanwhile, my water parameters/routine was the same for both batches. I guess what I'm trying to say is that I believe that the individual personality/behaviour of the fish play a huge role too.

That is a very reasonable assumption.

Excellent video. Thank you for posting this case study. I have witnessed increased attacks and disruption in angelfish hierarchy balance after significant water changes. I’m thinking that reducing water changes as suggested in the video is key to maintaining the established hierarchy. Alternative ways to remove nitrates from the water column with plants such as pothos is also a viable option.

Very interesting studies! A typical person with a fish tank might think changing a larger percentage of water every so often would be easier for the person and okay for the fish, without ever realizing the nuances of smaller water changes by volume done more often.

Thank you for that video! One question arises: How can fish from streaming water use chemical signaling to communicate in their group - when one has to assume that the chemical gets diluted instantly? P. scalare is a fish that lives in creeks.

I honestly don’t know. Do they spawn in pools that form after floods in the rainy season? Looking at them, they don’t appear to be built for speed or fast water. But I’m getting in over my head. I’m a reporter, conveying what the scientific say-I am definitely not a scientist.

Thank you very much for your video. My angelfish seems to be ultra annoyed if I turn the lights on the tank, would be very aggressive and dramatic. Also when I use siphon to suck the waste out😅 I wonder of anybody else's angelfish is also as easily upset or not...

My black angel fish is in my community tank with smaller fish. He attacked the smaller angel fish one by one. 3 dead now, which were female. But the other smaller species of fish are safe.

Thank you. Glad you liked the video. I honestly don’t know the answer to your question. This was from a scientific article that I reported, because I found it fascinating. I don’t keep angels and don’t have any experience with them.

I only have one angel fish 🐠 however everytime I purchase new angle fish my exsisting angle fish keep on kill new angle fish what should I do?
@sonnysfishroom3241
@sonnysfishroom3241 Месяц назад
I don’t keep angels, so I don’t know. I just reported on the study. My guess is that they feel threatened by the new fish. Maybe move the old fish to a different tank and let the new one get established for a week or so? Then move an old fish back into the tank every couple of days or so?

Bob, I'm sure entropy and turnover are familiar to you. Would we conjecture that the hierarchy is maintained due to the relative concentrations of urine from each of the members of the hierarchy?
@sonnysfishroom3241
@sonnysfishroom3241 2 года назад
That’s a thoughtful hypothesis. The authors didn’t actually test for pheromones, though, or even urine concentrations, so I don’t think anyone can say, for sure. But I can’t speak for the authors-I’m just a reporter trying my best to faithfully represent the main points of their work in a format accessible to no scientists.

@@sonnysfishroom3241, this is interesting to me. Presumably each fish has its own unique signature. I wonder if an LCMS would be helpful in identifing either the unique chemical, or combination of molecules. There's so much knowledge to discover.

What experts and what studies? It has never been determined how much water to change since it depends on your bioload in relation to your tank size,,temperaturel and how much waste is being accumulate partially based in how much you feed your fish. .Some useful info from these videos ,however adult Angels [ I have been breeding them since I was age 13 over 70 years ago.I do 90% water changes once a week just like most Discus breeders. do.Your seasoned filter has plenty of beneficial bacteria. Some call it aggression but it is usually the pairing off and the mateing process.I've never had an aggressive Angel kill another Angel but if I see real bulling with one Angel cowering in a corner I remove this Angel.Most of these videos are from personal experience and not scientific research.So don't take these videos as fact. Whatever works for you.
