After 3 years of building this bakery from scratch, we're being forced to move. What should be an 18-month process is now being forced upon us in only 4 short months, during our busiest time of the year. This isn't just a matter of logistics. This move will cost us an estimated $250,000 to build out entirely new infrastructure.
We've come a long way since this video was shot, but we are still building foundations.

Words cannot adequately describe the great level of appreciation we will all have for every small offer of help we can receive at this time. I'm sorry for the obstacles you are facing. I've followed you for over a year. I jumped in to market gardening three years ago. I was pretty green, but went for it anyway. No regrets. I have a strong customer base for organic vegetables, eggs, and I have added meat chickens and turkeys. Man, it is hard work but the pay-off is happening at last. I am up in Canada, but I am cheering for you! Big, big, respect! I pray that you get through this (and I know you will)! I am making a donation now. The ultimate outcome will be SO MUCH better with space and equipment that enables you to grow and flourish personally.

Proof, you can also apply to have your property rezoned to Commercial. The city can refuse you outright or if they don't, the request has to be printed in the local newspaper for 3 wks or more (depending on your local bylaws) for the public to challenge. If no one challenges the request, you MAY get your property rezoned.

Very nice, in germany that doesnt work, because of the very high because of hygienic and food technical requirements, they are completely crazy here. I now already know 3 bakeries that were 40-75 years old that had to close because of these perverse requirements because the conversion measures were too high. One bakery has prepared everything on the upper floor, the finished baked goods they may bring for 2 years only via a fireproof elevator in the bakery, they would had to rebuild the half house, they were no longer allowed to use the spacious staircase.

John and Amanda - May the starter be with you forever. I was very sorry to hear about stupid neighbours and their destructive ways and even more about the situation of your daughter. John, you're a storyteller as much as a baker. Siting down to watch one of your videos is better than Netflix for me, as Sourdough fascinates me and I think I became quite good at it the past couple of years. That's as least what people around me say. In the 90's I lived for a few years in Jerusalem and there was a big commercial bakery on my bus route and the whole area smelled always of fresh baked bread, which by no means was sourdough based, but smelled wonderful every day. I cannot grasp that someone would think this is a nuisance. Did the only thing I could from my place in Copenhagen Denmark, which was visiting your GoFundMe. For people in the local community: Come on people, do something to stop this!

Some characters just have a hard time dealing with other people’s success. They get immense pleasure and satisfaction out of throwing monkey wrenches in other people’s business and hard earned success. It’s time to make lemonade, or better yet more sourdough breads, out of the lemons that have been thrown at you. Expand and move your business to a different location; you’d need more space and equipment for your future business growth anyway. From what I’ve seen, you’re a warrior; they can’t keep you down or break your spirit.

I love what your doing and commend you for continuing despite your set backs - business is a lot about that, essentially you become a non stop solution provider macro and micro. I do however think your biggest mistake was not finding adequate retail space right from the start. Certain business's can run from home but the nature of your business, size and rate of which you scaled was always going to cause problems, with or without your pesky neighbor. Best you can do now is put that behind you (which I'm sure you have) and put all your energy into acquiring the funding. Should you fall short on the go fund me can I suggest you try and get funding from a personal investor/investors, people you know or know of, have a good standing in the community, successful business owners who buy your bread would be prime candidates. You'll obviously have to give away some equity in your business or pay back the loan with interest, depends how you want to structure it. You are super investible, very credible and driven... people with money who want to make more money love these attributes, then it becomes a question of time. I think the biggest obstacle, should this be a potential funding option for you would be yourself... whether its cause you're embarrassed, you think its demeaning, you think people will talk behind your back, its not how you were raised etc, only you can answer that... You have a dream, don't let by asking someone to help you stand in the way of that...Sometimes all you have to do is ask, people love to help and in your case I'm sure some people will be honored, but at the same time risk rejection too, be brave enough to ask!!!! You also need to realize the scale of what you are building is fairly substantial and not to get overly absorbed by the external issues that lay ahead, again that's just business in general, embrace it because you're doing exactly what you want to do. I only say this because I listened a lot to your RU-vid posts and felt there was a slight over arching theme of blaming other people for these problematic issues i.e your neighbor, regulators, broken oven etc, you have to take responsibility for all these situations, weather your fault or not, you have to own it, learn from it and move on - The buck stops with you! A lot comes down to forward planning and thinking critically about your next move, you need to be 10 steps ahead of everyone else, always. Ironically enough by screwing up, making bad decisions and not trusting your better judgement makes you more sensitive to not making similar mistakes going forward .. Most times you cannot control these shitty external situations, you can only control your own actions, otherwise you feel frustrated, think negative and clouds your thinking when your mind needs to be crystal clear and razor sharp. I do wish you all the very best and have no doubt you guys will be uber successful. Ill be following intently. Best advice I can give...Never , ever, give up!

Dear John, Amanda, As always, I was catching up on your latest video and was absolutely DUMBSTRUCK by the terrible events you shared. Our hearts go out to you and your family. It is after 2:00 am in California, but I could not rest. To that end, I humbly offer some suggestions and support. To be held hostage by what sounds like one anti-social neighbor is beyond the pale. Having had to deal with such psycho-nimby's during the course of my career of over 46-years, I have a few suggestions. 1. As mentioned in a response below, you must find a sympathetic newspaper and television reporter who would love to share your story, and hopefully, expose the duplicity of the city officials who have made commitments to you and have broken them. What you are experiencing cuts through so many levels. Your business is being threatened by the petty enforcement of a ridiculous city ordinance. Your family is being threatened by the loss of your livelihood and puts your daughter's care at risk. The city will lose a valuable source of revenue: loss of sales and taxes, loss of artisan made healthy food, loss of revenue to vendors, loss of employment, warning to the business community that Mesa is a petty, restrictive place to do business. 2. Given the community support you have, your community needs to immediately mount a very public campaign to get the city to rescind their demand to vacate your facility to a more reasonable schedule. When politicians see an out-pouring of public sentiment that could affect their political career, you would be surprised at how quickly they will find a solution. I would suggest the following: a. Your community needs to mount a letter writing campaign ASAP and flood city hall with their outrage. b. That your community flood the "Public Comment" portion of the City Council's Agenda starting with the next City Council Meeting, and every meeting thereafter until they come to their senses. Believe me, when politicians see people lined out the door, (or in this case, via electronic meetings), they see an immediate threat to political careers. When they do the math of all the potential negative votes from their actions balanced against the whining complaints of one neighbor, they will see things in a different light. The council needs to understand that they WILL NOT get the votes from all these people who sign the petition. They will not sacrifice their lame A___ES for one venal idiot. The Mesa City Council meets every 1st and 3rd Monday, They are meeting electronically because of Covid. I have copied their instructions for making a public comment below. Your community needs to line up as many people as possible to reserve their phone-in place in line. City councils usually allow up to 3-minutes of public comment per person at the beginning of each council meeting. Normally, there are few (if any) people who want to make a public comment during this portion of the council meeting. Can you imagine their surprise and embarrassment when just 20-people line up on the phone wanting to express their SHOCK and DISAPPOINTMENT at their actions against you, your family and your business? Especially when they hear this for over 60-minutes (1-hour)!!! Phone-in instructions below copied from the city's website: "Because of the current public health emergency, the City Council Chambers is closed for Council Meetings. However, the live meeting may be watched on local cable Mesa channel 11, online at Mesa11.com/live, ru-vid.comlive, or facebook.com/CityofMesa, or listened to by calling 888-788-0099 or 877- 853-5247 (toll free) using meeting ID 5301232921 and following the prompts. Public participation will be available electronically. If you want to provide a written comment or speak telephonically at the meeting, please submit an online comment card by going to Mesaaz.gov/bluecard at least 1 hour prior to the start of the meeting. If you want to speak at the meeting, you will need to indicate on the comment card that you would like to speak during the meeting, and you will need to call 888-788-0099 or 877-853-5247 (toll free) using meeting ID 5301232921 and following the prompts, prior to the start of the meeting. You will be able to listen to the meeting; and when the item you have indicated that you want to speak on is before Council, your line will be taken off mute and you will be given an opportunity to speak." 3. Hire an attorney (I know this sounds really sleazy), a really good attorney who understands city politics and can suggest to the council that they may regret their actions not only politically, but also financially if he finds a good case for you and against them. 4. Their actions against you, your family and business is the height of political arrogance, and sounds more like the actions of a fascist or communist dictatorship. As you so eloquently expressed, you are providing JOBS, SERVICES, FOOD, TAXES and CITY REVENUE for the City of Mesa. During this pandemic, you would have to be a political moron to lose all of the community resource you bring to the city. 5. You need to reach out to other council members that may prove to be allies. Council members who have a political axe to grind against the current Mayor and/or Vice Mayor. 6. Find allies in the business community that will tell the council how destructive their actions are, and what kind of message this sends to the business community. All your vendors need to support you NOW. They will suffer along with you if you have to close down. 7. I know that all you want to do is make great bread in an ethical and honest business environment supporting your family, employees and community. However, the actions of one idiot and the city council threaten all you have worked for. You cannot allow these small minded petty bureaucrats to get away with such punitive, irresponsible actions. 8. I am going to leave my contact info on your voicemail, or leave it with someone who might answer the phone. Please feel free to contact me if you wish. John, you, Amanda, Amara, your parents, and everyone involved in Proof Bread have an incredible story that needs to be told, and that story continues to inspire not only bread makers, but many others from all walks of life. As a Chicago-native myself, I remember a line from a National Geographic article describing Chicagoans as "enthusiastically combative". It's time to take on the "dupas".

People don't need to be reasonable. Where is the limit? People can expect that buying a home in a residential area that the area will stay residential and that a neighbor can't just grow a manufacturing business just because they want to. Hey I'm not saying the product isn't fantastic and the people who run Proof aren't the salt of the earth and and good all around folks. I'm just stating some facts and it's disingenuous to think that you can break the rules just because and not pay a penalty. Proof has been give four months, out here in California they would have rolled up on that house and shut off the utilities. What do they say "you would complain about being hanged with a new rope."

@bayareaartist999
@bayareaartist999 4 года назад
@@HospitalLocksmith That's actually false. He cannot use his property as he sees fit. I would assume that all these issues are revolving around the zoning that the house is in. The laws that the area has I would guess say that residential is for residential and to have a manufacturing business out of your home of a certain size is not allowed. You can disagree with the law that doesn't make it not a law that you would have to follow. We live in a society of people and we have decided to follow rules that the elected officials have created to keep the peace and keep people safe. There is an infantile attitude that some laws are for following and some are not. Where is the limit, where do you stop? How about in my house in the front yard I put 6 250 gallon smokers that run 24 hours a day for my texas barbecue? The people on one side of me don't mind but the smoke predominantly blows into your property. But hey it's my property and I should be able to do what I want? right. That's why we have rules to govern these things. I mean it bothers you but no one else right. I bet you would RUN to get my barbecue shut down any way possible. Something that seems to be lost in our culture is being considerate of those around us. It's as if the pirates motto of "take all you can and give nothing back" has taken over. That leads to anarchy. Finally there is this, a lot of people are arguing the morality "right or wrong" vs the reality, "the way it is" of the situation. Laws deal with the reality not the morality. In a situation of law vs morality the law wins.
@HospitalLocksmith
@HospitalLocksmith 4 года назад
@@bayareaartist999 As I said, and you ignored, a bakery is causing no neighborhood problems, it is not creating mass traffic(employee's park in the driveway), and not creating pollution(as in your ridiculous**and uneducated** example). I fully oppose zoning laws that restrict a property owners ability to use their property as they see fit, such that such use does not create undue and uncorrectable problems for neighbors. and such corrections for problems are the financial obligations of the generator. No I wouldn't be running to shut down your business, in fact I would most likely be your customer. Of course your lack of BBQ education means your BBQ would suck..

If anyone here lives in Mesa, Arizona, and you want to help them out, besides donating to help them relocate, call the City Council's office and the Mayor's office and tell them that you don't like what's happening to Proof. Most of these people never actually hear from constituents, so a sudden barrage of calls from constituents during an election year might actually be the Hail Mary to get the to back off on Proof. ONLY DO THIS IF YOU LIVE IN MESA, AZ. If you live outside of Mesa, hand-written letters and post cards to the City Council and Mayor's office telling them what Proof means to you, might help amplify any efforts by people calling in.

How about people get together and find a spot for Proof to move to and people get together like a barn raising and do the construction and buildout. Or how about I buy a house next to yours and in the front yard I put 6 of those 250 gallon propane tank smokers so I can open a texas style barbecue place in the house next to yours. Oh and the smokers will be going 24/7 and there will be lines of cars and people at all hours.

Well you just exposed the so called American dream, I live in Europe. In my country there's a law that if a representative of a governing body tells you 'you have a lot of time' and actually says about 20 months or more, you have a right to that. They cannot come back a week later and tell you four months. I don't know America that well, but what a country.... I can also not understand why people are bothered by this kind of thing. If my neighbours had such a bakery I would welcome it! As I live in the Netherlands I once did some work at a baker and I can tell you this baker had his bakery in a area where people would live. The storefront was even in the street it was no problem. Does having a commercial establishment in your neighborhood congruently diminishes the value of residential real estate? I know your neighbor complained of noise level and parking of non-residents, which could be more aesthetics, which you addressed both and which you have been talking about in your social media platforms. Still, the solutions were not amenable, why is it so difficult to reason with your neighbor and your city? Many Americans buy into the American dream of owning a house, which increases value overtime (hopefully), which then be the source of their income upon retirement. Could this be an argument by your obstinate neighbor? I do wish you all the luck.

Zoning and land use laws which allow individuals to interfere with how someone uses their property are scourge. Hyper-local control of zoning has given us insane house and rent prices in big metros, and they also prevent people from doing perfectly benign activities on their own property. If you sympathize with Proof Bread’s plight, you should support liberalizing our zoning laws so that people can actually use their property!!

Wow I tried to be open minded, but honestly, the more of the video I watched, the less empathy I have. John has a level of quiet superiority that I can't fathom. Yes he and his partner have worked hard, but they've made a lot of poor choices that have made their lives harder, despite coming from a position of priviledge. They haven't approached this in a very smart way, and it just reads to me as ego. They've hamstrung themselves and invested poorly, instead of thinking ahead. They owned a condo and didn't sell it until they were already in debt? Now they want us to pay for their move that they knew they would have to do if they wanted to expand the business? They've had 3 years to plan for this, I understand setting up a business is costly but this should have been accounted for instead of pouring concrete.
