We have chinked many log homes over the years using all techniques, machines and products. We made this video to share with you what we have learned and what we prefer. The log home in the video was restored using walnut shell blasting-sanding-staining restoration process with Sashco Capture in Bronze Pine color.
Visit our website
www.madronaloghomes.com
Jen manufacturing brushes can be found on Amazon. We buy the 1" and 2" brushes.
The air assisted bulk loading gun is an Albion 29oz Teflon coated gun. We now use an electric bulk loading gun that can be found on Albion's website. We now use the Albion electric guns.
The loading machine is called a bulk loading machine. I really like using these machines vs the follow plates.
Products I like to use are Sashco Log Jam or Permachink. Both have their benefits, but for all intents and purposes they are the same. Most of the time with our clients it comes down to color selection.
Please feel free to reach out with any questions or advice needed on your project, we would be happy to help.
Please contact us if you have any questions.

Thanks a ton!! The heart of the advice is don’t make it concave or convex, make it flat, and make the line width even. That is the heart of making a good line. As simple as that sounds, it takes a lot of practice. Thanks again!!

I didnt see it at end of video, but I was curious if you guys put some chinking over the spray foam so it has a uniform look and feel to the rest of the lines? Would that be okay or does it trap the foam and cause some other problems?

Yes we chink over the foam. The foam acts as a backer material. No problems with moisture

Very helpful. Doesn’t that foam expand far beyond the area you are sealing? Do you need to cut it back after it expands? Also once the foam sets up, do you use the chinking caulk (or whatever the proper name is) on top of the foam? Thanks for the video.
@tbird267
@tbird267 4 года назад
We use the low expanding window and door foam. Trick is to not let it expand out and to tamp it down while still pliable, no cutting it back needed. Once foam is set up, we use the chinking over the top.

I’m a caulker in Boston. I’m assuming you could also use a bulk set up on a battery operated bulk caulking gun. Seems like it’d be a little less cumbersome and we also dry tool using Marshalltown slickers. I’m assuming this is a latex product? I suppose they’re different ways of chinking 🤷🏻‍♂️ as I’ve never done it. Great video though. Really interesting and quality craftsmanship 👍🏻

Why is there spray foam in the checks of the log cut ends?
@omniscientgrunk
@omniscientgrunk Месяц назад
I have an old log home and it is chinked. My guess is that they intend to fill the cracks with chink after or even use a log crack filler made by the log home products people. I fill my small 1/4 " cracks with a near color matching latex caulk which holds up fairly well. Rain getting into these cracks and even cold air in the winter can actually get into your home if the cracks are in the wrong place.

I can see the ease of use advantage with the foam over using backer rod, but do you know cost per foot? Is one more than the other?
@tbird267
@tbird267 4 года назад
I am not sure on the cost per foot difference. The cans are about $12 at Home Depot and go a long ways.

I was told not to use spray foam in the gaps between logs cause it gives of a gas and makes the chinking bubble. Have you encountered this?
@madronaloghomerepaircare6054
@madronaloghomerepaircare6054 4 года назад
We've encountered plenty of blisters or bubbles but they're usually from gas expansion of the water vapor trapped in the chinking when it heats too quickly, as in direct sunlight. That's our going theory at least....I've heard lots of explanations. Permachinks current formula blisters much more easily than sashco.

I'm working on a log home built in the late 1980's. Is it true that I won't need backer rod? The joints are all pretty tight. Should I remove the old caulk first? Great video, thanks.
@paulmaxwell8851
@paulmaxwell8851 23 дня назад
The general rule is that gaps under 1/4 inch do not need backer rod. Anything above that does require it. You are aiming to make the 'web' of chinking compound span the gap from log to log with a 'web' thickness of 3/8 inch, no more. Backer rod makes this possible.

I like the potential cost savings of these bulk loaders over the 29oz tubes, but how do you load when you are 20 feet up on scaffolding?
@brianwhite6080
@brianwhite6080 5 лет назад
rope it down to your help :)
@tbird267
@tbird267 4 года назад
We drag the machine up onto scaffolding. Personally it I find it easier than tying off that big bulky hose off the chinking machine to the scaffolding. Nothing beats the portability of 29oz tubes up on scaffolding though, may be a good option if there isn't a whole lot. With the tubes you can't lay as good of a bead however since there aren't any custom ribbon style tips.
@azed5251
@azed5251 4 года назад
@@tbird267 I ended up chinking my 20x40 2 level log house awith 29oz tubes and basic guns from Home Depot. It wasn't bad at all. Between the pace I was going and the fact that I could cut the nozzle tip to flow more easily, I never had hand or forearm issues. If this was a business for me, I would look into the bulk loaders and caulk savings, although, my next log house is going to be flat wood instead of round and mortar instead of synthetic. It is also going to be smaller. This house is about 1600 sqft and I could be happy in about half that.

Depends on the bead size and how big the logs are (how many lines there are) but buckets run about $250/five gallons, so roughly 2-3k in material on average.

Why do people build these round log homes? So fugly. Traditional hewn logs are so much more beautiful and easier to maintain.
@rjlkc4668
@rjlkc4668 3 года назад
I've always liked round logs better although I agree the hewn log homes tend to look cleaner. I was thinking the hewn logs became a status symbol due to the extra work involved to square a log back before mills and chainsaws. I'd built a small cabin a few years ago and couldn't imagine adding the extra work to the process.
