How We Conned the British Press | Fakes, Frauds & Scammers

It was the story that outraged Middle England. 13 art students claimed they took a grant, spent it on holiday in Spain, and then had the audacity to call their escapade ‘art’.
As planned, the press went after the students - writing column inches after column inches of righteous indignation. The students’ sunny snaps were printed in nearly every newspaper, and their motivations were interrogated on the evening news.
Except, this is exactly what the students wanted: the media-feeding frenzy was, in fact, the result of an elaborate and skillfully executed hoax.
Rather than lounge in the sun on taxpayer money the students had actually gone into hiding for a week, busying themselves with faking their photographs, postcards and props.
When the news broke that this was all a hoax the story only grew bigger. The art students had managed to hoodwink the all-powerful British tabloid media. The predictable media reaction, they said, had been the real art piece all along.

Today this problem of the press not fact checking anything and presenting their opinions as fact is so much worse. They and their families would have gotten thousands of death threads, the media and politicians would have campaigned for their arrest, and some people would simply not believe the 2nd story and believe in conspiracy theories.

I once read a book by a journalist who lived in Moscow during the 1990s and apparently back then there were travel agencies specialized in this. They would provide their customers with all the 'proof' of an exclusive holiday (fabricate photos etc.) in order for their customers to make friends and social circle believe they went on fancy vacations.

Despite inflation, £1,000 wasn't a fortune, even in 1998. At the time there were MP's filing dodgy expenses claims for way more than that on a regular basis and the press ignored it. I bet a bunch of the journalists who reported the story were probably fiddling their taxes for considerably more than that. The British press (especially the tabloids), have always loved kicking down without care for the facts. They've changed very little since this stunt other than having seen their influence wane.

I did something very similar for my MA art project with the local press in 2010, regarding occult artifacts found in a local wood in Staffordshire called Hopwas Woods. The story ended up in far flung places like Australia and all over the web as well as the newspaper. A copycat I wasn't even aware of started to feed into the story after a while which was pretty weird. Mixing fact and fiction together as an artistic practice can make your life quite strange indeed.

Even at the time £1,000 wasn't that much. Most of the outrage was fake and stoked up by the tabloid newspaper industry who have always reliably made money by attacking young people and have never liked the arts. Costa Del Sol is one of the cheapest and most popular holiday destinations for British people. It It would have seemed vaguely plausible that they'd all travelled there for £1,000 if they'd booked as a group, shared accommodation and gone outside the main holiday season, but it would have been a holiday on a shoestring. Even today you can get very cheap deals if you go at the least popular times of year, as when demand is lowest, the hotel owners are happy to have their rooms bringing in any money at all. From the video, it sounds like they staged their fake holiday in the winter months. Ultimately the students didn't need to be able to afford it as they never went.

I was so ready to judge the 'con-artists' when I saw the thumbnail 😅😢 As it started I was like, 'they don't seem the least bit regretful 😒' Definitely a bit lesson on not judging people so quickly or easily 😅 Love this! They worked incredibly hard (and must have suffered immensely. Media storms and backlashes are cruel) and I hope they were rewarded for it in their final grades, Art Careers and infamy at University of Leeds, Art School 😄

It reminds me of a channel 4 series many years ago that filmed a group of 8 friends as they journeyed across the world attending raves and getting smashed. Apparently the group of friends had pitched the program idea to channel 4, who went for it, green lit the 7 episode series. This meant the friends duly received 10s of 1000s of pounds of funding. It was a bit like a reality t.v. show before reality t.v. happened. I can't remember the name of it though.

Bitching about the media is too easy and a cop out and a way to excuse your own faults. False news wouldn't be nearly as prevalent is the consumers of news actually prioritized accuracy. There are plenty of media outlets who do great very in depth work and go to great lengths to verify everything....but the general public doesn't want to go through the effort of digesting a complex story. People are too easily distracted to hear anything other than headlines, and even if they weren't, many are too stupid to even come close to understanding issues without a headline concluding for them. If Fox News started accurately reporting stories with no commentary, no anchor telling people what to conclude, they'd lose most of their audience. I don't blame the media for giving people what they want. I blame people for wanting it. Education and the general public's lack of overall intelligence is the reason fake news exists.

What I can’t wrap my head around is the money. Even with inflation, how would 13 people have a beach vacation with 1000 pounds. Even a weekend trip. Were the prices back then really that cheap? I obviously get that it was a hoax but. Wouldn’t that sound really fishy.

You could fly to Benidorm or Ibiza from UK return for around £60 in 1997. I did and also Amsterdam several times for around £39. £1000 still wouldn't be enough for a full holiday for 13 though with accommodation, spending money etc. The reason the hacks overlooked this fact is because the cognitive bias is there for all to see in the film. At that time, students, single mothers and holidaying larger louts were the tabloids favourite enemy of the state especially on the front pages of the daily Mail, and Express. Right wing papers loved to tarnish anyone as a no good layabout freeloader if not in full time employment 24/7. Now its just Megan Merkle and immigrants who are their go to enemy of the state..

The news asked the students, who lied and then turned around and said "gotcha". Sure it's art, but further investigation of a busy journalist often depends upon what people say. If someone just says, "Yeah, we're guilty," then there isn't much more to investigate. I appreciate the way that it highlights our dependence on second hand sources, but a philosophy essay can do this just the same without making you a $h!th&@d.
