Hi there, thank you for this video! I feed our dogs a similar diet, but mix some of their dry dog food with it. My partner is on his 3rd Leonberger. I grew up owning akitas, so Lenny (our leo) is my first time owning Leonberger. Sadly, I know they have a shorter lifespan than other dogs. I want our Lenny to live as long as possible, I have been doing researching everywhere for a good diet and I always find it best to ask people who own the breed. I understand diet alone doesn't determine lifespan, but cooking the best diet for my dog definitely helps. If you don't mind me asking, giving this diet to your pups, what is the average lifespan that your Leo's have lived? Thank you!
Whole grains add key nutrient components such as taurine. Grain free diets are linked to many cardiac issues that unfortunately result in death and aren’t often caught in time to be reversible. Our first Leo died of heart failure. It’s not something we are willing to compromise again.
We too give organ meat which includes heart but the animal nutritionist who had laid out this diet included a whole grain in addition to the organ meat. The ratio of meat to grain is (ballpark) 70-20 split with the final 10 comprising of vegetables. We’ve now dropped chicken and are on a beef focused mix due to allergies. taurine amounts are higher in beef and therefore I put a less rice into this blend.
