I have learned sooo much from you, hope you are feeling well, you sound like you are coming down with or getting better from something? Pellets? I don't need no stinken pellets. ;-) LOL No, here in the high desert, we've got a LOT of wild cotton tail and some black tailed jackrabbits to. If it rains well in the winter and spring, their numbers and size goes way up! So, what I do is put some temp fencing up in the front, plant a variety of different seeds, let it grow a couple three months, then take down the fencing. Whatever the wild bunnies don't eat, I don't feed to my rabbit's. They seem to grow just fine. ;-)

@moonmama2481

Not 100% sure but the fence is probably made from willow branches, that's most typical since they're very flexible but living fences/wattle fences can be made from anything flexible enough to bend like that.

Thanks for sharing the wild and yard sources of food that you use for your rabbits. And it's not "white-trash looking", it's country - real country. I would trim my trees about this time of year, and hang the branches up to dry in the shade, and use it as tree hay over the winter. Let me tell you, when I started to untie some of it, my rabbits were up on their doors, all excited. Also, phragmites are a great source of free food. The Love, Love, Love this stuff. and the state appreciates having it harvested for them. Again, I would gather it green and hang it to dry for winter feed. Also, the brown stems make a great wind break and sun shade as thatching. Just watch out for the seed heads, they are extremely flammable - like gasoline (but make great kindling for your fire). My rabbits and chickens loved wild lettuce, kale, bean vines, the flowers of sunflowers and cilantro, Anyway, the possibilities are their if we look around us. Thanks again for all that you do and share.

She says you HAVE TO feed them pellets, but pellets are nothing more than dried alfalfa, and I do believe rabbits were around long before we started making pellets out of alfalfa, so what gives? Why not grow, harvest, and dry the alfalfa instead of buying pellets? I'm sure that if we can compress sawdust and wood shavings to make wood stove pellets, we can make alfalfa pellets.
@dirtpatcheaven
@dirtpatcheaven 2 года назад
It isn't JUST alfalfa in commercial pellets. If you feed them only alfalfa there isn't enough variety or protein to keep them healthy. For young rabbits they are putting on so much weight that they will die of malnutrition if you are not really careful with your replacements foods. For YOUNG rabbits under 3 months I give free choice pellets and other foods on top of that. They will eat only a small amount of pellets and then mostly eat tree cuttings and garden extras. But I always keep pellets in the cage as a choice.
@Ishtars_Star
@Ishtars_Star 2 года назад
it isnt just fresh alfalfa. pellets are fortified with vitamins and minerals as well as having other ingredients. you should probably read the back of a bag sometime to see what ingredients are in something before just assuming you know.

How many cages do you need if you are breeding one buck and two does? Does each rabbit need its own cage?
@uftc1324
@uftc1324 2 года назад
I don’t advise having them together more than 6 months, they can get very territorial. doe pare usually aren’t as bad as buck pares, but I still don’t advise over 6 months. If they are grow outs and going to be processed shortly after being weened than I’d say 2 per 4 square feet maybe 3, Two will grow better. for every additional rabbit add 2 more square feet. If it was me I’d have two for hole cages each individual hole being 4 square feet. And the one cage for each breeding rabbit.
@dirtpatcheaven

Three for the breeders and one grow out cage for each doe's litters as they wean. So five is what I recommend for three breeding rabbits.

you grow burdock on purpose???? Omg we have been trying to get rid of ours for a few years now. The field behind us has tonnnnsss along the edge of the farmers field so it invaded our property before we bought it. We've cut down about 80% of the growth since they're biannual plants. I believe you can feed young burdock to rabbits (we do) but once they get larger they're poisonous.
