MY STORY:
In 2016 I had been in law enforcement for 7 years.
I was not in control of my schedule, I was hardly making any money, and I was away from my family working nights and holidays. I was capable of more, and I was silently suffering. I knew I was selling myself and my family short.
I started Florida Turf Pros as a side hustle in 2016 before going full time in 2017.
My lawn business changed my life.
I control my own schedule, control my own income, and I am proud of what I have built; a business that supports me, my family, and some employees.
If you are a lawn care business owner, this channel will be a valuable resource for you.
This really is a great industry to be in, and I hope that by documenting my journey it will help you.
-Jonathan C. Christian

This is so true! I am neighbors with a board member of our HOA and he asked if I could give an estimate for cutting down some dead trees. In less than a month and only 16 hours of labor including my time at brush recycling I made $3350! I actually used some of your advice in selling myself on the written estimate through Yardbook. I explained that my equipment is professional, sharpened blades/chain saw etc. They are already asking about taking care of mulch.

90% of my contracts are commercial, many ive had ongoing for 10 years +. Ability to handle multiple tasks other than lawn care is a must including irrigation, tree and shrub care, weed fert and pest applications, snow removal, landscaping skid steer and mini excavator work. Much more profitable than residential and each day maintenance is spent at 3-4 locations compared to 15-20 residentials for the same money. As long as job Is done and done well, no drama like you get with many residential clients

Did you walk into the main office with a business card?

@Cradle2Venus no card, I'd drive up in a company truck and demanded to speak to whoever is in charge of contractors and talk directly with them then return with bid if they wanted one. with large companies someone is always hired to deal with them, smaller companies it's a regional manager, small business is a manager or owner themselves. I'd only target places that were higher end but needed improvement. I currently take care of 2 different medical businesses with a total of 8 properties, a radio center, 8 large apartment complexes, 12 internet properties, a gulf course condo association plus residentials. Once you land one go above and beyond to improve property and soon you will have more work than you can handle

2 questions: Why do commercial lawns need to be cut when residential don’t? If the commercial grass grows all year, shouldn’t residential too? What am I missing? 2. My teenage son is 17 and going to be a senior in school in fall 2024. He currently has 50+ lawns. He is solo except for special projects like mulch, etc. How does he go to the next level and hire a crew to cut lawns so he can take on more customers?

The commercial lawns are not growing through the winter, but the C. P. Do like a clean lawn, no leaves, no trash, hedges taking care of. Johnathan mentioned in another video, that if you observe the properties, you will notice more to be done then just cut the lawn. Mention it to the property managers and 97% of the time you will land the work to be done.

One thing I will say is that everyone has their own market. If he is not interested in commercials it’s okay. Commercials are not always less labor intensive just better money

The question is how to get ahold of them. Anyone with lawn or weeds might be hitting it's how to get in touch to someone who pays others to answer those calls for them

@@Cradle2Venus Good question, maybe property records with local tax collectors office? Maybe, an app called Regrid that allows the user to see details of the property, name on title of property, etc etc..... and of course use the information responsibly for research purposes only That might work, or just ask around?

Hey Johnathan, do you do any commercial jobs without a contract? We try to push them but a lot of times for local sites, they haven’t had a contract before and they aren’t open to signing one. We typically don’t have any issues with the ones that don’t, but it would be nice to know it’s locked in when winter starts approaching.

They can be. Do extra stuff for them at N/C and they become very loyal to you.....

How do you keep the commercial year after year? Commercial is not very loyal.

Value Proposition One of the things I found out is that you have to have what they want. You have to do something the other company won't do. Transparency and Communication help a lot.

never raise your price more than 10%. always answer your phone when they call. commercial is more loyal than residential in my opinion. most commercial management don't want to go thru looking for another company as long as you do your job.
