How we grew a giant Dorset Naga plant

Every year we grow a few Dorset Naga plants in large pots for demonstration or for sale. They grow into impressive plants, large, attractive and very productive. For the last two years we have had a left over plant at the end of the season, so have counted the chillies. Both times we have picked nearly 800 chillies off them.
This year we wondered just how many chillies could a Dorset Naga plant produce. So we selected three plants from the plants raised for selling and put them into large pots.
This video is how they did.

Hi thank you so much for your video it is very much appreciated .nigel is really impressive. seeing the size of Nigel really encourages me to take extra good care of the plans that I have and encourages me to pay close attention to the plants that I have and not disregard them. they all have potential regardless of the size that they grow .I spend more time taking care of each of them now. I don't have a lot of them but I'm appreciative. thanks

Great video. Love seaspring seeds for posting. For the additional fertilizer info: I searched for this in comment section: she said “ We used a general purpose, water soluable fertilisers, mostly one called Miracle Gro but sometimes a different one called Phostrogen. I applied very low concentrations of the fertiliser when I watered the plant, between two to four times a week. If I had used the recommended application rate I would have done it less often. Time of day makes no difference.” Also ‘Greenvale’ was the type of dried chicken pellets

I belong to Naga tribe(North East of India). I guess this is the hottest chilli or one of the hottest chillies. You will find lots if you visit Nagaland and Manipur, India. One plant can last 5-6 years in a right soil and climate.Once it turns to red, pluck it and dry it. You can use it for another yrs

Dear Majoy, how nice to hear from you, thank you for writing. You should be very proud of the naga chillies, they are an amazing chilli. Dorset Naga was developed from Naga Morich, which is the Bangladeshi strain of the naga chilli - but I am sure you know that.

Impressive growing, especially for your location. I notice that the dorset naga in general is a particularly robust plant. I started some seeds in a 36-cell germination tray last summer. The plant grew about 6 inches, then was left practically unattended for nearly a year (in the tray!). Mind you, it was growing on a teeny tiny amount of potting mix. It died back to just just the main stem. It was on its last breath and showing only a sliver of green on the stem when I decided to transplant in a hydroponic system. Now it is robust, maybe 2 feet tall and with dozens of flowers and a few developing peppers already. My point? Out of the dozen varieties I seeded in the tray last year, this and one other survived, possibly by going dormant. Now I've got about a month or two to figure out what to do with all the dorset nagas that will ripen. Not a bad problem to have. Take care!

@seaspringseeds
@seaspringseeds 10 лет назад
Glad you enjoyed the video. Do remember that when you are aiming for a large plant you must grow a variety, such as Dorset Naga, that has the genetic potential to grow large. I really do not believe that "Nigel" had reached its full size, the winter stopped its growth. But some varieties, such as, say, Stumpy, will stay small no matter what the pot size. For more information on this see my video on the effect of pot size.

Every year I watch this video to keep myself inspired in the garden. Lovely plants. I’d like to see what you could do with a large C. frutescens. Maybe 10,000 pods? Good stuff. Aloha
@seaspringseeds
@seaspringseeds 3 года назад
So glad that you like our video. We have grown a very large number of C. frutescens plants over the years, and some do produce masses of fruit, but if I were going for the most number of pods per plant I think some small fruited C. annuums would be best. However, as the fruit of Dorset Naga are so much larger, I believe Dorset Naga would be hard to beat when looking at the total weight of harvested fruit.

Hi Joy and Michael - i have just potted on one of your Dorset Naga plug plants into its final pot - not 100 ptrs, but possibly 60trs - good drainage and will be water through a reservoir (bit like ring culture) - its in a 1/1/1 mix of homemade garden compost, homemade woodywaste compost (so carbon rich) and garden soil that was sieved - i put a few chicken pellets in every couple of inches of pot mix so the seedling roots will eventually reach - did you add more pellets as the plant grew? I can also feed with comfrey liquid if that is appropriate?

I bought some Dorset Naga seeds just after xmas, I germinated them in early January, they took between 13 and 17 days for them to pop and I got 19 out of 20 sprouted, one of them looked like it had no leaves but I left it in and now it has 2 small leaves, its still behind the others but itll be fine i'm sure. I was going to try and sell 1 or 2, I thought more people would be willing to try and grow them once the fiddly bits done and they are about 3 months old, but now were on lock down due to COVID19 Ill have to grow them out myself, I'll be eating hot sauce for the next 5 years lol. Thank you seaspring seeds, the seeds were great and so far worth every penny.

It is really nice to hear that you got the seed ok, thank you so much for the feedback. But you know something - Canadian law allows me to send seed to Canada and I get quite a lot of orders from our website. Hope you have a great time growing Dorset Naga. It is not an easy chilli to grow, but as you see in the video, if you get it right it is incredible. Be careful of the chillies; their heat level is extreme.

I applied Miracle Gro, a standard general purpose compost, in very dilute concentrations about twice a week when I watered the plants. We really did nothing special, just made sure that there was nothing limiting the plants' growth, i.e. never dry, plenty of nutrients, large pot, no shading, etc.

Can you tell me, the Dorset Naga is it the same as the Bhut Jolokia? If not the same do you have the seed? I have promised some friends to grow it for them, I gave them some of the lemon drop which they loved, don't think the Thai green curry was hot enough for them. I have purchased all my chilli and pepper seeds from you and am ready to purchase them for next year. The Bellaforma from seaspringseeds can grow huge as well. He grew in my greenhouse in full ground, pressed against the north-side. I can imagine he could grow a lot bigger in a big container. I don't know if I have enough room for a 160 liter pot:)...
@seaspringseeds
@seaspringseeds 8 лет назад
+Rolo Beorn I am not surprized to hear that you had a Bellaforma plant that grew very large. Many chilli plants can get very large given enough space, water, nutrients, warmth and light. If any one of those is restricted the plant will be smaller. My guess is Bellaforma could get very large, though we have never tried.

I searched for the answer. Besides the chicken manure fertilizer in the mix she mentions this : “ I applied Miracle Gro, a standard general purpose compost, in very dilute concentrations about twice a week when I watered the plants. We really did nothing special, just made sure that there was nothing limiting the plants' growth, i.e. never dry, plenty of nutrients, large pot, no shading, etc.” And in another reply she said this:” “ We used a general purpose, water soluable fertilisers, mostly one called Miracle Gro but sometimes a different one called Phostrogen. I applied very low concentrations of the fertiliser when I watered the plant, between two to four times a week. If I had used the recommended application rate I would have done it less often. Time of day makes no difference.” Also ‘Greenvale’ was the type of dried chicken pellets

I was just wondering if any artificial lighting was used at any period of the plants life? Did you use any microbes and bacteria or mychorizzal funghi?
@seaspringseeds
@seaspringseeds 10 лет назад
No, we didn't use any artificial light. It was sown in a propagator in a greenhouse in January, potted into a 13F pot (about 1 litre) and grown in a heated greenhouse until end of April when the plants were put into the large pots you see in the video and kept in an unheated polytunnel. No, we did not introduce any microbes or fungi to aid growth.

Just amazing! Is the Naga unusual in that it is able to grow this big, or is it mainly down to care and attention? Sounds like with all the right nutrients, the pot is the limiting factor.
@seaspringseeds
@seaspringseeds 10 лет назад
Yes, Dorset Naga is unusual in that it has the genetic potential of being enormous. In fact, we don't know how large it can get. The plants in the video stopped growing at about 10.5 months old as the winter came. Until the bad weather came there was no indication of growth slowing down. My guess is they would have got MUCH larger still. Most other chilli varieties have a finite size that is much smaller. However, with all chillies pot size is important. The Dorset Naga plants in the video were treated in exactly the same way, except for pot size. Also see this video I did about it: Growing chillies: Effect of pot size
