How we made our SAILING DREAMS COME TRUE

In this video, we tell you our story. Why were we drawn to sailing? How did we pull it off? What's next?
Pursuing a dream requires a lot of sacrifices -- neither of us have "normal" lives. We wanted to show you what our life looks like, how we got here, and most importantly WHY we worked so hard to get here.
I know I get REALLY inspired listening to other people talk about how they pursued their dreams, so I hope our story can maybe provide a bit of insight or inspiration to you too.
If you like our videos and you are able to, please consider supporting us through patreon. If each one of our subscribers gave $2 per episode (we make three episodes a month, so that's $6 a month) then we'd have enough to sail around the world full time on the yacht of our dreams and invite every single one of you on board with us! Little amounts can go a long way. Thanks so much for watching! www.patreon.com/user?u=13249792

I'm 70, a former boat builder myself. Really amazing resurrection of the dropped boat! Most people have no concept of how much labor and love went into that. You are both remarkable, a wonderfully inspiring couple. I'm making sure my daughter watches this.

Maya and Aladino, you are so lucky to have found each other. When I was 21 I had the dream of building a 42 ft ketch and go sailing where ever the winds would take me.Then I fell in love with a girl who did not like to sail. I married her anyway and we are still together 40 years later. She is the love of my life and we have enjoyed many adventures together. We did end up buying a Cal 25 and then a Peterson 35 (Blackheart looks very similar to Magic Carpet) later in life and sailed for many years in Howe Sound and the Gulf Islands. Although I never realized my dream of sailing off-shore, I am grateful to people like you who share your adventures with us dreamers. Maya, I think you should create an album of your music and set up an online store.Keep the videos coming from Switzerland 🇨🇭

Howe sound and gulf islands?! Those are my home waters. Truly a beautiful place to sail. Thanks so much for following our journey. As for an album, that is actually one of my goals for the winter. You can expect a sailing magic carpet album sometime soon!

I just found your channel recently, so forgive me for making a comment two years after the fact... :) I've seen all your episodes through #14 or #15, plus the two special ones (this one and how you refit Magic Carpet). Though it was in an earlier episode, I was touched by Maya's love and admiration for Aladino. Though I forget the exact quote, it was to the effect, "My husband's a professional boatbuilder, and he can fix ANYTHING!". She was just proud as punch, and knew she's the luckiest gal in the world. Aladino is a lucky guy too; that goes without saying! When Maya said that, her whole face lit up-eyes, smile, everything. That was really touching; I like that! I'm happy you all found one another. Secondly, about working where you all stop when you need money, that'll certainly work! In fact, Sailing Project Atticus, does that. After refitting a 50+ year old sailboat and learning almost everything as they went along (Unlike Aladino, Jordan wasn't a pro boat builder going in, but he could be now!), Jordan and Desiree acquired a lot of skills. Jordan learned a lot about fiberglassing, carpentry, mechanics, etc., while Desiree became an expert seamstress. When they finished refitting Atticus, they had a choice to make: spend another year in the US to earn more money, or go for it with just the $2,000 they had saved up. They went for it! They pulled up anchor, and sailed south. They saw some places (mainly Cuba) before running out of money in Isla Mujeres, Mexico. They stopped there and worked for a year. Jordan teamed up with a local boat builder, while Desiree started sewing and repairing things for other cruisers. After a year of that, which they videoed on their channel, they were able to set sail again. So yeah, what you all are doing can definitely be done, and others have done it before you. With Aladino's AWESOME skills, I don't think finding work would be any problem! All he needs to do is show before and after pics of Magic Carpet; if his prospective boss has any sense, he'll hire Aladino on the spot... :) Thirdly, you all are wise to pursue your dreams when you're young, because life goes by SO FAST! I'll be 59 in February, yet it only seems like it was a few months ago when I was your age. Not only do you have the time and opportunity to do this; you have your health. Though I'd like to go sailing (I'm planning on getting a boat soon), I don't know if I could pull off going around the world. I have arthritic knees, and, at times, even going up and down stairs can be a bit of a challenge. Anyway, I plan on getting a small boat, relearning how to sail (I did it while in the US Navy), and taking baby steps to see how things go. Sorry, I digress, so I'll come back to that in a bit. Getting back to youth and health, you all don't know how your bodies will hold up over time; you don't know how your knees or anything else will be in 10 or 20 years time. Why would you? It's not on your mind. That said, depending on genetics, how you treat your bodies, and how you all take care of yourselves, you'll start noticing changes in your mid-late 30s. You'll realize that you don't recover from injuries as quickly as you do now; that muscle pull that takes days or weeks to heal now will take weeks or months to recover. You'll realize that you don't have the energy level you do. Plus, you'll be at a different stage of life. If you guys were 10-15 years older, you might not be ABLE to do a keel up overhaul! And that's what you two did with the boat. It wasn't a refit; it was a full blown rebuild and overhaul. Anyway, if you all are in your 30s, you might not have the energy to do such a job. For example, I follow a chap, a fellow RU-vidr who goes by the name Captain Q. On his channel, he looks at various sailboats that are for sale; he goes over their history, design philosophy, equipment, condition, and so on. One of his early episodes was about a Cal 28 that was available for $1,000. The hull was sound; it was mainly the inside that needed to be redone. It looked like a bigger Cal 20 that I'd sailed in Hawaii. If I'd had the youth and health to finish that boat, I'd have gotten it; it would've made a wonderful boat. I'd have bought it in a heartbeat! If I were 30-40 years younger, that would be feasible; at my age and condition, I can't. Unfortunately, no one bought her, so she ended up being salvaged for the lead in her keel... Anyway, I have a couple of reasons for doing baby steps. One is to relearn the basics of sailing. Another is to slowly build up my skills and knowledge; though I know the basics, I have a lot to learn. So, my plan is to get something like a Montgomery 17, a Mariner 19, Cal 20, or perhaps a Cal 24, Cal 25, Cal 28, or a Columbia 26. These boats are small enough to do day sails in Raritan Bay, NJ when I jump back in to sailing, yet they're big enough to do overnights to other points along the Jersey Shore or NYC. They're also capable of more. That is to say that the aforementioned boats are boats I can grow with. Finally, though I haven't gotten there yet, I hope you all taped footage of your time in Switzerland. Jordan and Desiree made footage of their refit in Key West, and they also taped their time in Isla Mujeres. It not only keeps the viewers interested with content; it not only shows the other side of cruising (i.e. making ends meet), thus giving a more complete picture of the lifestyle; I think it can serve as inspiration for those who are thinking about following in your footsteps. It can show people that, yes, your dream IS possible! Even if you don't have a lot of money, you can make your dreams come true; you just have to put in the work. Anyway, those are my thoughts. I really enjoy the channel, and I'll be binge watching to catch up... :)

Many years ago a friend was walking through a marina on the Great Lakes and paused to admire a wooden sloop being worked on by an older man. She struck up a conversation beginning with how beautiful her lines were. A few minutes later she owned it for the money in her pocket, $5, a I recall. She knew absolutely nothing about boats or sailing but was fortunate to have many friends to help put things "ship-shape" and to teach her the basics. Wonder where she is now. Best of luck in this really great life adventure!

Maya, just teach violin online, in person, in schools and perform yourself. Much better income tban boat polishing and far more suited to your outstanding musical and film making talents. Aladino, keep doing what you are good at and building skills and experience. Lifelong earnings around the world for you too and much nicer in tropical climes! Well done both on where you got to now. Keep real. Peace and love from UK.

Your biggest opportunity is that you are far more genuine than many other youtubers. You have worked hard for the dream at such a young age and this can be seen when so many others suggest the same but you can tell they have brought the dream. Working real jobs and sailing will be much more balanced than thinking others will pay for you live the dream, Patreon to me is begging now and not funding fledgling artists as intended. Keep it up and well done great vids?

Maya, you are an amazing story teller. I noticed this while watching some of your previous videos, and your ability to to describe what is/was was going on around you gives the viewer the ability to visualize being a part of the voyage. This is a gift that comes natural and will serve you well. I think the Patreon idea is a good one but for it to work for you I would suggest even if you return to Switzerland to work throughout the winter that you continue to create and post content and keep the viewers engaged. Best of luck and thanks for sharing. Your stories are inspiring.

Thank you for sharing your videos. I found you 2 days ago, and have watched every video so far. It was enough for me to subscribe. I think a Patreon account is a great idea for you both. I think doing a live feed once a week will help as well so those participating can help fund your journey as well. I see peoples live feeds get donations from $100 to $1000 in a 30 minute to 1 hour live weekly as you are able. I contribute mostly to the live feeds as well. I know it is not all about the money, and I know that is not what it is about for you. However it does take a lot of your time to produce your videos to share with us the viewers, and a great job you are doing. Cheers to you both and I look forward to your future videos.

Bill Connely thank you so much for subscribing and watching every video! Wow! Live streaming is something I would love to get into - just got to convince Aladino haha :) I actually didn’t even know that live streams sometimes earned extra donations, so that’s also interesting. I’ve watched several of the ‘ on the water’ vlogs. Your 2 of the most grounded appealing and talented you tubers out there. You have had to work hard for everything. Unlike some who have been handed a 2 million pound Cat. Then proceed to make thousands of pounds cashing in on ‘our merch’ or our ‘clothing line’. To the vlogs where mummy and daddy are bankrolling the adventure. Or the family and their pets who are sailing the world. You have worked every step of the way. Your vlogs are so informative, you explain every detail. I hope you make it, if true grit and determination have anything to do with it, then you should. I’m off to add you to my Patreon list. Again thank you. For an armchair sailor who gets seasick in the rain I’m enjoying the canal journeys rather than the ocean crossings.

I share your admiration to "grounded" sailors, following four of them, all over the world. Alas, I refuse to look down on other channels. They come from different walks of life, be it the semi-retired couple, the travelling journalists or the family escaping midlife crisis. Whenever I become jealous I have to admit that they achieved something which I didn't! In particular, that cat is 1 million max, rather less (750k?), and it's not a gift but a lease, including brand promotion which resulted from their history. Riley worked hard on oil rigs to start this journey, and now they are using their assets to secure the future of their family - I consider them brilliant start-up entrepreneurs! Remember, it's not their fault that people give them their money!

My question is my dear young lady, what did you do with your boat??? I really hearing your story's. Maya; see if you can give classes. Please seriously consider the risks to your hands Reynaulds could finish your ability to play well. It is no joke and it is insidious. The risk is very real. On a practical note, consider making a simple tent to go over the caravan. 2x4 and tarps. Keeping an air space more or less wind free around the caravan will decrease the heat loss tremendously. Look for inspiration at how hunt tents are made for use in the Canadian North where you well know -15 C is tee shirt weather.

In this short time I have spent watching all your video's and also getting to know you two... I have to say that I like you very much. Congratulations! Yes, do get a Patreon account. I think within 2 years you could have sponsorships from ordinary people of maybe $400 or $500 a month. Of course the danger of that, seriously, is you do the sailing to entertain your audience instead of just having an audience to make the sailing possible. I've seen channels where the former takes over. You might consider other work options too - Aladino's multilingual ability could be used, or Maya's production ability could be used on film location projects, both of which would be more lucrative. Also, you can go the advertisement route on your videos, doing ads for sailboat accessory companies that appear at the end or midway through an episode. Why not? It provides info to people who sail, the company gets customers, and you guys get the modest ad income. Go for it! Do it all: Patreon sponsorships, ads, and maybe explore new possibilities, like offering 2-day weekend sailing school for 3 or 4 guests on your boat, once a month. Kawabunga!

You two bring peace to my mind when I watch your videos. Aladdin’s story was very exiting for me personally, I would never imagine he started dreaming boats in Baja California Mexico. 🇲🇽 since I am a dreamer in becoming a sailor like him, and specially because I am Mexican and that gives me hopes to find one person like Miguel to start up converting my dream into reality. I would like to see Aladdino talking Spanish in a video and now makes sense why that Mexican breakfast looks so original and well prepared even with black beans. I know Maya likes Mexican food since she mentioned in the video where her father was fixing the engine on her boat and after that went for burritos to a Mexican restaurant. I got to your video channel by accident during my research about sailing. I got a few ideas about what I would like to do in the south of Portugal and one of them is sailing! Maya, I don't know what did you study, but the way you describe things and narrate the videos is beautiful. The moment you talk about the appreciation of the beauty of nature with the sunset in the background, throw me back to 2008 when I felt exactly what you said for the first time. Aladin you have amazing skills, great commitment, passion, self-motivation, and awareness... so motivating! I am sure it is not for free and cost you a lot of commitment and compromise to achieve your goals, but you are great companions to each other, and I am sure that most ppl who watch your video diary makes them believe again in a happy, self-developing relationship. A wonderful story how it all came together for the two of you. I guess you can say adventure was in your blood. To have both of you loving sailing and connecting as soul mates. No coincidence. I started watching about 2 weeks . You both seem down to earth . Willing to live a simple life, to work hard for your dreams. God bless .

The keyword of your story is Love. The first time I watched your videos I thought about your upbringing and your parents. They must have been teaching you or providing opportunuties to love and respect the nature, human labor and virtuosity. They were soul seekers and lived their lives as they understood life. Your names, Aladino and Maya already shows that you are the followers of a spiritual track, not in the formal sense. Aladino has a connotation of a tale and Maya reminds me of wisdom. You are clearly showing that life, it you love and loved, becomes the tale itself.. Be good!

Maya you have a wonderful command of language. This makes your vlogs soooo interesting to listen to. (Aladino too). You have such a natural delivery style and I love your voice. I only recently discovered your vlogs so I am starting from the beginning. I wish you well with you adventures. I love the sea and would love to have done what you two are doing. I am too old now but I am planning to buy a Narrowboat and navigate the English canal system. (Not as exciting as your voyages but at least I will be on the water). I also love France and have spent many holidays there. It was fascinating therefore to see you on the a French canals. x

I replay previous episodes often .. I just played your 4 series on Curlew III. This episode you mention Tani Abi. Her book was the 3rd sailing author I ever read. First was Robin Graham: Dove .. Second was Tim Moore: By Way of the Wind & Swan .. Third Tani Abi. I was hooked. My first boat was a 29 ft Baltic Cruiser. Although it never sailed I had a great time tearing off the cabin top and rebuilding it. I found Eric Hiscock and read all his books ... wow .. what and adventure. ... Later I found my Spencer and read most all of Hal Roth's books. I'm on my 2nd Spencer, long story, she's a 42 ft'er. I've totally rebuilt her. On my first voyage I plan to sail the route of his first book: Two on a Big Ocean. ... Maybe our sailing paths will cross when you venture into the vast Pacific Ocean.

Your stories are truely inspiring! I admire your determination and perseverance! I also had a dream to sail to faraway places (didn't even dare to dream about sailing around the world😅) when I was younger... While I did manage to have a taste of sailing eventually, my voyage was cut short due to a combination of circumstances... Watching your videos has revived some fond memories of my days at sea and made me reflect on why I failed to go very far... All the best with your future adventures🐳⛵🍀
