Over the years, this basic fact has emerged: it seems a lot of audio techs in churches don’t have any musical ear at all (I discovered a tech with a "tin ear" once)! Or it could be that the room acoustics of the sanctuary are so bad, but no one seems to know what to do-at any budget. My last two projects at my former church were great successes in acoustical control and stage lighting. This face-to-face time on actual gear with someone like Dave Bookhout (and a great worship team) is absolutely awesome! Thank you and blessings to you!

Hey Brian, absolutely love this and am greatly looking forward to videos in this series. Could you make videos similar to this for churches that don’t have these types of resources like powerful computers, midi boards, or outboard gear? For example, I’ve been to a lot of churches that just have an X32 and then a cheap older computer for video. Could you make videos for that type of setup, like how to get a good mix with just onboard gear and a couple plugins?

@northwaybookn

KAYSTRINGS OJO NOAH KAYODE You can create a scene for each song that has the tune key changes built in. We’re using the LV1 platform to run waves but you can do the same thing in waves other software called multirack as well. Sometimes we run waves tune in chromatic also so no scene / key changes are needed but that can get sketchy depending on how good your singers are.

Good evening. So sorry to ask what is possibly a stupid question. At my church our speakers are placed behind the microphones (your guess is as good as mine). Therefore we have issues with gain staging and feedback all the time. Would you say using a gate on vocal mics would help with the feedback issue and possibly provide us with a bit more room to boost the volume on the vocals?

@northwaybookn 5 лет назад
vivanco15 D.I.D. CHOI had the same question about the difference between mixing for live and broadcast. Just reply’d to it. We have recessed floor pockets in various parts of the stage that each have a chunk of 6-10 XLR connections which are all numbered and feed into our digital snake 1:1. All someone has to do is plug into any of them, call out the number on that connection and it can be digitally patched at the board to any channel.

@northwaybookn
@northwaybookn 5 лет назад
Kalle Cohnen Great question. We double patch each vocal channel on the board so the singer has the option to mix non tuned signal into their ears or the tuned / processed signal. That said, most of our singers like to use the channel with tune on it so they can hear how it’s interacting.

Ok, must admit I was prepared to blast you guys for using Ableton Live channels as accompaniment. Watching this, if what you are doing is using technique to maximize a singer's god given voice without ANY additional FAKE, SHOW ORIENTED PAID FOR vocal tracks......kudos to you guys for keeping it "excellent and authentic"!! May have to share this with our sound guy......But to all of you folks that pay for and use Ableton Live artist tracks in a worship service: You need to seriously rethink where your priorities lie, because it ain't in serving God that's for sure.
@worshiptutorials
@worshiptutorials 5 лет назад
Actually we do use Multitracks and backing tracks. We don’t use Ableton to play them back, but we do use them, and so do thousands and thousands of other churches. And all of us bring glory to God by doing so. The notion that using a tool like backing tracks disqualifies us from truly worshipping is very Pharisaical 🤷🏻‍♂️. So please, blast away.
@BaymondRell
@BaymondRell 5 лет назад
@@worshiptutorials As long as what you are presenting is 100% LIVE with ZERO added tracks, then it's "authentic". Otherwise, sorry but it just isn't. A church should go with what they have period. If it's not there, then just play the music and nice videos like say in the 90's. But I KNOW that with what I see here, you have the folks right there within your own congregation to serve beautifully with ZERO supplemental assistance period. I can see how my coming here with another viewpoint appears to you to be "self-righteous", honestly not my intent.

Great question Kris. There are many different configuration options depending on your audio console and how much processing you are looking to do. We have 2 MADI cards in our Midas Neutron that connect to a DiGiGrid MGO which goes between MADI and the SoundGrid network. Once the audio is on the SoundGrid network it’s processed by an Impact server. Round trip is as little at 0.8ms when using the server. Many consoles have a SoundGrid card that can be purchased which would simplify this process. I’d recommend emailing Jeremiah at Waves - Jeremiahc@waves.com and he can work with you to come up with the best system design for your audio console and needs. Jeremiah is awesome!

Question for Dave. How does your approach change when mixing for live vs studio/livestream?
@northwaybookn
@northwaybookn 5 лет назад
D.I.D. CHOI It doesn’t change much. When mixing for broadcast, we do add room and crowd mics plus more verb than we typically would in a live situation to help the mix feel more like it does in the room rather than a studio recording. We also compress / master the main output when mixing for broadcast to give Facebook live / RU-vid levels that make them happy. Don’t typically compress mains in a live environment. We may do some videos on how we mix for broadcast in the future. Stay tuned...

Michael Branda I would start with the horizon bundle and add the SSL bundle, Waves tune real-time, F6, PSE and maybe C6 if you want a great multiband comp. thanks fellas. two questions - what interface to you use to run the signal into WAVES and what DAW do you use ?
@northwaybookn
@northwaybookn 5 лет назад
We use a DigiGrid MGO to get audio from MADI onto the SoundGrid network and then back to MADI. Round trip is as low as .8ms of latency with a SoundGrid server. We don’t use a DAW as that would introduce a significant amount of additional latency. I would not recommend doing that in a live environment. Once the audio is out on a SoundGrid network, you can use waves multirack or waves LV1 to control plugins in a channel strip.

Hang on what’s the -12db thing!!! Help!!! Do mean you set the gain so that’s the channel is at -12db?
@northwaybookn
@northwaybookn 5 лет назад
I’m referring to the level of the Pre-Amp on your input channel. Typically on digital consoles, we want that level coming in around -12db. That leaves some room if the input signal gets louder... If that input signal hits over 0db on digital consoles, you will get some distortion on the channel so we don’t want to push it too much. Typically we go through our most upbeat / loudest song first in rehearsal so we can set gain to the loudest each instrumentalist / vocalist is going to be. Maybe we’ll do a video on this process at some point.
@original_pokey8896
@original_pokey8896 5 лет назад
@@northwaybookn sorry Im a noob. so you raise the gain until that channel is at -12db?
@northwaybookn
@northwaybookn 5 лет назад
You’re asking the right questions! Raise the input gain (not the fader. This is usually the knob at the very top of the channel strip on a lot of consoles) Until your channel’s input meter is at or around -12db. If your channel doesn’t have its own input meter or if it’s a very small input meter, hitting solo or PFL on that channel will typically show that channel‘s level on the PFL or solo meter. On an M32 or X32 for example, this meter is right next to the main left and Right meters.

Three middle-aged men clowning around, acting like middle-schoolers. (And how about that shoulder massage at the beginning of the video -- Oh, we'll just make a joke about "inappropriate male contact" that will be really hilarious, guys!) Why can't the leaders act like adults? Like men and not "guys." Everything is so dumbed-down and unserious. The world is lost and is passing away and Christians are joking about turds. Because, oh man, it's just sooo funny.

Dude a trust fall in the sermon? This is what’s making Christianity a joke.

It's a sermon illustration, my friend. Jesus Christ himself used illustrations constantly while teaching. Christianity has never been nor will it ever be a joke. However, comments and attitudes like yours are why the world looks at 'Christians' and only sees hypocrites.

Worship Tutorials because hypocrisy is so present in Churches and Christianity i pray for a better church a good church to receive Christ when he comes. But this, when did Jesus do a sermon illustion? When did he say it’s necessary?

Every parable was essentially an illustration used to teach a point.

Worship Tutorials yeah because the parable of the New cloth is the same as a trust fall.

Uhhh . . . can't help but think, this is, practically, irrelevant to 99% of viewers. Sorry, but I am guessing that VERY few worship leaders have the resources you have at your church, and FAR less at that. Happy for you and other churches who can afford such setups, but, that's just not "the rest of us". Sincerely appreciate your work though.

Ok! Above comment was unfair. You didn't title this as a "how to", I was just hoping to glean some how to-ness from it and was dissappointed. Carry on! Sorry!

No worries! Dave and I are planning more in depth videos on these production topics. We're also going to talk about this Waves system and how it's actually a lot more affordable and approachable than most people think (myself included).
