When buying a new boat you might think you can take delivery and just go, but it turns out there are many, many decisions to be made before you can set sail. In this video we share in detail the systems and options we selected from the Leopard Factory while others we added aftermarket and our reasons for doing it the way we did as well as the associated costs. FUnny thing is I was just talking with my sister about when we were kids and vacationed on Solomon, Islands and how we would go out on a small boat and pick up blue crabs fro free around the pilings. And boom, here you are basically doing the same thing. It's a great place out there and I know you and your family are really enjoying your stay. Hopefully the remnants of Laura have pushed offshore and you're through the worst of the rains. We had alot of rain starting from Friday afternoon all the way through Saturday afternoon, but then just like that the last rains finished and the glorious sun came out. Thank you for a great walk through and review of your spectacular outfitted Leopard 45. Its great to see a dream come true. All your options are on my list, love the shore power setup, that was something I have never seen before but great idea and a must have in my opinion. Loved the discussion on the aft protection with all of the different types of light diffusion and protection from the rain, agree with your observations and recommendations. One question I have is what made you go with RayMarine equipment verses B&G? I have seen many cat owners that have gone with B&G because they say it is a better system for sailing and is better integrated with a wider variety of add ons, like cameras, charts, depth finder, forward sonar, security systems, etc...

Hi Michael, Thank you for your great comment and sharing your memories of Solomons Island. It's a beautiful place and the boys and Maki loved catching blue crabs and we even had a bonus as Oliver and Lukas were able to feed a family of ducks off the starboard transom. Of course once they feed the ducks, they came back every day for more! 😜 Glad you enjoyed the video......part 2 on the exterior is coming next and then we head inside! To answer your question on B&G. We opted to go with the factory's only option on electronics which is Raymarine. I've heard great things about B&G but since Raymarine was bought there have been many great system improvements. The MFD as an example is very robust with lots of tools and features but that said it's not as intuitive as I'd like. Once you get used to it, it's easy. Just takes spending some time with it but perhaps that's the case with even B&G? The other reason we went with Raymarine is because once registered, Raymarine gives us an additional year of warranty coverage.......3 years total.

Hard lesson I learned back in 1978 - you should have two painters on at all times, and use them both, every time you dock/tow, on your dingy. Carabiners clips on the end of the painters are really helpful to tie-on when you're visiting other boats. They also work on smaller cleats. Smart choice on the dual-start, btw. Batteries go dead, sometimes quite unexpectedly with a core-collapse. I would change your house batteries out for lithium. You can draw them down to 10% instead of 50%. Other than that, you're gold. And I watch and what you're doing is so much sophisticated than what my family and I did back in the '70's & '80's. We had a compass, paper charts, a sextant and an RDF for navigation. No water makers. And the list of sophistication just grows every time you show things on your boat.

Regarding painters I whole heartedly agree with you! I actually have 3 painters on our dinghy, two that I use every time we dock and are rigged to the bow, one which has a carabiner on the end for the exact reason you wrote. I also have one rigged to the back of the dinghy just in case I need to side tie the boat for some reason or at the very least as a back up painter for the bow. I ALWAYS have the thought of our painter breaking / letting loose while we're ashore or visiting another boat and boy would that be a bad day if the dinghy had floated away. In addition to all of the above mentioned, I use a rubber coated steel cable with combination lock to lock up the boat when at a dinghy dock so hopefully we're covered :-). For house batteries, we will be changing to Lithium at some point. Since we upgraded to AGM's from the factory and the trade in on those was next to nothing, we thought we'd use the batteries we already paid for which in the end has been a good thing since the AGM's require us to pay attention to electric consumption which in the end has allowed us to learn more about our boat and how the batteries, converter etc works. The good news is that when we had the solar panels installed, Just Catamarans already "prewired" the system for Lithium so when the day comes, the switch over should be rather simple. Technology has definitely made massive changes to how vessels travel the seas wether private or commercial. Even the U.S. Navy stopped using paper charts some years back but, it's always a good idea to know how to use paper charts.......just in case! 😜. All the best! ~Andy

Nice video. Just a tip of advice, if you are backing into a slip I would recommend you add a large size fender(in horizontal position) at each of the rear scoops so incase you do touch the dock it won't damage your boat.

This is a fantastic episode! You've answered a lot of questions I had and Maki's camerawork was spot on. Well done! Andy - you're the first person on YT, that I'm aware of, to make comment on a camera up the mast. I've watched a lot of YT vids with drone shots above the mast looking forward and you can clearly see channels, bommies etc in the water - but no one has a camera mounted up there. When we buy a cat that will be a must have HD camera I'll have installed. Installed correctly, I would imagine you'd be able to see Maki as well directing you towards a mooring ball etc. I can't wait to see Part 2 - thanks for making my Sunday morning!

Great episode! Sailing Sisu had similar forward camera comment and opted to have the camera mounted on the port spreader bar (forward and downward viewing for port side docking.)

Hmmm that’s a good question. I’ll have to look into that. The MFD currently allows me to toggle from fwd to aft cameras and doesn’t seem to support more then that. Will check with Raymarine.

Nice review of your exterior. We are s/v Truly Amazing 2016 L-40. i been following you since the beginning. Look forward in running into you out there once things open up some. We are about to do an enclosure on our boat so I am going to take your advice and just do the sides first to see how it works before doing the aft area. We are going to put our enclosure out to the edge then snap it vs the fixed channel along the glass. Ours will be able to roll up and down. I hope this will work well for us. The Roll up-door at the helm. You may be able to add 2 male snaps a little higher on the hardtop to pull the roll higher and out of view. Also, the screws in the male snaps can rust. I use a clear sealant to make the tops flush preventing water buildup and rusting. The clear color makes the sealant barely noticeable. The soft sealant is easy to drive a Philips screwdriver through if the snap must be removed.

We definitely agree with you. Wish it wasn’t so costly but we knew this going in. We’ve worked very hard to make this dream a reality and we’re blessed to be able to share it with our children. Since the skylight at the helm is rigid, you might be able to tint it with a ceramic tint film if you prefer it without the sun shade up. I have that on my car, and while it still allows over 90% of the light through, it is amazing at how great it is at rejecting the radiant heat coming through the window.

Thank you for the suggestion! The helm skylight does have a heavy tint on it already which is why we decided to simply add the removable screen which we use to diffuse the mid-day hot sun. The screening is a 70% grade so we can still see through it to be able to check our sail trim etc, or simply remove it if we need a more clear view of the sails. So far this setup has worked great for us but perhaps at some point we'll add the ceramic tint film you suggested. The only issue with that could be that once it's been applied it may be too dark in the evening hours to clearly see up the mast. We'll have to check it out. Really enjoyed this video. The L45 is a great boat, and you chose some excellent options. The cameras are a brilliant idea. I have a Riva 50 MY (we are currently in Japan) and mainly pilot from a high flybridge. I have learned to twin stick stern docking by feel rather than sight, as it is impossible to see the aft corners as it is blocked by the flybridge deck, so in time, you would get so used to where your corners and sides are that you wouldn't need the cameras. But since you have them, why not? I do really see the value of the bow camera though. I might purchase one so I can single hand the anchor easier from both the inside helm and the flybridge. I am also looking at an L44 or L45 to retire onto in 3-5, but I also love trawlers. Tough decision... Either way, see you on the water.

I completely agree with you as I've already become pretty comfortable with docking regardless which side we tie to without the cameras but, the cameras are great when it comes to noisy rainy or windy days and the forward camera is fantastic so I can see Maki when we are anchoring. We love the L45 but funny you mention Trawlers. .......there are some gorgeous Trawlers out there. Regardless which you choose, we look forward to seeing you out on the water! They should really make a cruiser package with most of these options standard. The main reason why I didn't end up with a leopard was that they really nickel and dime you for every little option. Where as most semi custom builders give a single delivered price and as long as you aren't asking for anything outrageously more expensive they just make it happen. (The not included cushions and having the seat and backrest being separate options really did it for me) Yours looks super nice and clean. I think your aftermarket choices were really well thought out.

Hi Matt, we've asked some of these questions about "cruiser packages" as well and in the defense of the big three production cat companies, yes they are building these boats to a price point to sell boats but loading them up with options would also raise the overall price tag and at least in Leopard's case they have found that people want to chose the brands of aftermarket items they want such as solar, watermaker etc. We are planning long passages to different continents but not every catamaran buyer is planning that kind of trip and thus doesn't need all the additional options. Boats are kinda weird that they are very "custom" with regard to options and aftermarket stuff. It's not like ordering a car when you pick the base model, comfort, performance or luxury packages. Now that we've purchased and used our boat, we're ok with the lower (in general) purchase price tag and over time we are customized and improving our boat wether it's solar, watermaker or the quality of the blocks and running rigging. There are brands out there that give you a "fully loaded" boat with dive compressors, etc, etc such as the Xquisite 50 but then that boats over $1M at delivery, something that's out of our price range. As we need to change out running rigging or anything else on our boat, we have the opportunity to "upgrade" to higher quality equipment such as Dyneema halyards etc.

Hi Noah, you can get stainless steel refillable pods for the Nespresso machines. We bought ours on Amazon. We don’t use them regularly because it’s not the most convenient way to make coffee but they do work well. 😁

Hi Sandra, the Bimini was installed for us since there are snap in brackets that need to be glued to the dinghy, then you can snap the Bimini on or off if you like. We purchased ours through Nautical Ventures in Fort Lauderdale FL but I'm sure any dealer of tenders could install one for you as well. Having a Bimini top makes all the difference rain or shine.

I noticed you recommend products off amazon that make things easier etc. Not sure how you do it but I heard that you can set up an amazon store that basically you list all these products and over time if individuals click your link to purchase you earn benefits from it. Also it gives you a quick list to everything you recommend. Someone else who knows more or some reading on amazon may be in order if interested. Also if you do make it happen starting at beginning may be better then trying to list down the line. Just a thought I wanted to share.

This summer of sailing to the Chesapeake and back to Fort Lauderdale has been all about us using the boat so we take the time to highlight what we may still want or need to add to the boat since after this Florida stop we are headed offshore for far longer passages and want our boat to be ready for such long journeys. We have and will additionally add items that we will definitely use.

Hello Angus, Since it was going to take 22 months for our catamaran to arrive, we had that long to study and research additional options and systems we wanted to add to the boat. We attended boat shows so we could look at safety equipment and learn more about other options as well. I think it's really important to put thought into how you plan to use a boat that way you can identify the systems you need instead of just buying more and more and perhaps overspending, sometimes on items you don't really need. I enjoy your review. I am interested in how you attached the life raft cradle. I have an 8 man Viking Life raft so I contacted Viking about servicing the raft and adding a cradle. They told me the cradle needed to be mounted (through bolted) to the roof. Since the 8 man weights over a hundred pounds they asked how I would deploy the raft off the roof. Wondering if you can show me the mounting

Hi Joe, I thought I had already replied to your question so if this is a duplicate reply, I apologize. Yes the cradle is bolted to the rooftop. Just Catamarans has the cradle made and they install it. I think it would be far easier to deploy the life raft from the rooftop versus pulling it out of a locker in the aft cockpit where it was previously located. Curious as why you chose the digital radar from Leopard vs using JC for this? Since I am also getting the Raymarine Package that includes everything but the auto pilot (I have added this) and the HD digital radar. I have heard from others that JC attaches scanner higher up which gives it more distance. I am not sure if using JC for this means additional screens or will it integrate into the screen from Leopard?

Liked the smiley windows around helm. I have seen a Lagoon cat with it all hard around the helm which was a bit too much I think. I see you had a raymarine multi-function display. But I was wondering is there room to install some other displays for just AIS and radar?

Hi Neil, We love our helm enclosure! We worked with Creative Canvas in Fort Lauderdale to design what we thought would be functionally useful. Regarding your MFD question....there is room to add one maybe two more i70 display units but more and more systems are incorporating many boat functions and systems into the MFD. This is good and bad, the bad being if the MFD goes out, uhhh well we'd be a bit screwed. The good news is that we have multiple pads that are connected to the boats systems via bluetooth so we'd still be able to see what going on. We also use multiple pads to use different navigational maps and charts so we can cross reference and also not be tied to the one at the MFD. All the best! ~Andy

Sorry for the late reply.....we don't actually run our AC much at all. If it gets super hot and humid then yes but for the most part with hatches open and fans on low, it's nice and cool at night. That said when we were in the Chesapeake for the summer, we definitely ran the air conditioners. Thankfully we were plugged in to power at a marina otherwise the generator would have been racking up the hours!

Hailing port of San Clemente, CA. Do you plan to bring it to SoCal any time soon? I was skeptical of the forward cockpits for a while but I'm coming around. It seems that nobody has had any swamping issues in over 10 years and they are a great addition to comfort. My preferred boats are now the L44 and L45. I can't go L48 as my Newport mooring is limited to 45'.

Hi Steve, thank you for watching the videos more to come. At the moment there are no plans to bring the boat to CA but you never know. For now we're along the U.S. and Canadian East Coast and the Caribbean Islands which seemingly has endless options to explore. The East Coast and the Atlantic in general is a very, very different style of sailing and cruising. Warmer in every way yes, but so many coves, waterways, bays to see, not to mention the entire Intracoastal Waterway which allows you to travel on the "inside" from the Florida Keys all the way to Baltimore and beyond!

Just curious. Do you cruisers maintain a separate GPS in case your main helm plotter goes out? Beautiful cat. Well outfitted. One thing I noticed is that your dinghy covers your aft view. Can you raise it so it doesn't block your view.

Not sure about other cruisers but we maintain at least 2 of nearly everything including GPS. On OliLuki we have 5 GPS units so I think we're covered 😜. Regarding the dinghy......while traveling the dinghy is lifted high to keep it clear of waves so in that position it is blocking some of the view aft however given the beam of our boat (24.2 feet) it's easy to see aft by the transom steps. The Aft Cockpit also has very large windows so there are plenty of areas to still sit and see the world passing by. When we are anchored or on a mooring ball we set the dinghy in the lower setting which doesn't block the view aft at all.

Hi Andy, Just put a deposit down on the new 42 and will pick up boat in Jan 2022. Looking at all possible add ons, gets pricy! Does the $11,500 price tag on your dingy include the cost of 25 HP engine and all the additions you added like bimini top etc.......Did you get feathered props to improve sailing proformance by eliminating some drag on dual engines? We will have boat in Seattle so trying to figure out what is better to add locally versus using Just Catamarans as you did. We will sail around for at least a month or two before getting boat transported to Pacific NW. Not living aboard full time but plan on spending lots of time on boat. We live in Bend OR and will head up to Seattle regularly and certainly plan some longer trips. Lots to explore around Puget Sound into Canada and even Alaska. Last question, how experienced a sailor where you? I had a small 26 ft McGregor in FL and was an avid windsurfer for many years. Also had a flats and bay boat in FL. Sailing will be fine but I am a bit intimated about having such a large wide cat and all the systems I will have to learn. Plan on just heading out to Keys and Bahamas to try to learn everything as quickly as possible.

Hi Michael! Congratulations on your new Leopard 42! It's a beautiful boat that will bring you and your family wonderful life experiences and memories! Ok to answer your questions......1.) Dingy, yes the $11,500 was all in including the 25hp Yamaha outboard. 2.) Feathering Props, no we have not yet switch to feathering / folding props but we probably will before we start our long offshore passages. This just comes down to cost as this all gets expensive so we're doing our "add on's" in stages. Since our travels thus far are more "coastal sailing" we wouldn't see much benefit from the feathering props but once we start multi-day or week long passages, feathering props will prove to be worth their cost as it will allow us to see at least 1+ knot improvement in speed but also shave hours or possibly days off our passage.

You just have to take the cowling off too pull start if you dont have a pull start cord built in.

Hi Justin! We’re fortunate that not only is the pull start cord built in but this latest series of Yamaha outboards has a pull start assist which actually kicks the cord out as you’re pull starting the motor making it really easy to do. It’s a great feature although we use the electric push start button most of the time 😜

Hi Carey! We’re always glad to answer questions or help in any way we can. Regarding your question on the cameras. They do NOT rotate or move in any way. It would be great if they did however that said, I use these cameras all the time and find them to be very useful. I use the forward cockpit camera every time we anchor so I can see what Maki and the boys are doing and also when docking to Port. The Aft Cockpit Camera I use anytime we’re backing the boat in. Even if the cameras could move I would almost certainly never mess with them while trying to dock the boat. Anyway I hope this helps! All the best and stay safe! ~Andy
