How we raise egg layers on the farm in Maine like Joel Salatin's Polyface farm! 

We do this on a smaller scale and don't have a problem with raccoons. The electric fence keeps them and foxes out as long as you move it often. Same with rats, as long as you disturb the area it seems to throw them off and you don't lose eggs. The chickens will run under the coop to get away from hawks and vultures. Late last fall we lost a bird to a hawk for the first time in 5 years but, for us, I think it's because I had an open day run for them without shelter. I put an a frame of wire fence over their water and a pallet on blocks for them to get under and we haven't lost anymore.

Hi Eric - it changes as the price of grain changes and the increases in supplies change. It is something to keep and eye on and keep your expenses in mind when you set your prices or need to change them.

You should start small and build your market before getting to 1000 hens. You can't really get a concrete number because it changes from time of year, weather, food, flock mood. It changes all year and year to year. It's better to run out of stock sometimes than have too much waste unless you're doing pigs too.
