I don't know a lot about electronics but was always fascinated by it and actually wanting to learn . I am from the 80's so i've played a lot of these games as a kid . For me watching someone pinpoint troubles like you do in your videos is like a wizard performing arcane magic. Even tho some things get clearer with time spent watching those vids, i don't see how i would possible end up repairing relatively complex stuff like this anytime soon . I enjoy your videos a lot tho, and am watching them avidly, with some coca-cola and a bowl of popcorn in the other hand ! Man i get stressed when you plug back the whole stuff back in and hoping for it to be working . Good job !

I was a wee young nipper of a teen in the early 1980s with my bag of loose change heading down to the arcade halls to play these classic coin-op Star Wars arcade machines with the awesome flight styled hand controller. This was very revolutionary back then giving the thrill of flying/steering your favourite vehicles. These and the slightly later Paperboy coin-op arcade machine with the BMX handlebar was purely unforgettable stuff after school sinking hours into these games with friends. If you weren't a kid of the 1980s, you absolutely missed out on the best of decades for entertainment. Great video and repair job.

Back in the early 1980’s I was one of the repair techs for a computer store chain and we were still repairing most things not just swapping boards. I learned a lot from the senior guy, and he used that piggybacking chip method of troubleshooting. It even works for RAM chips, and if necessary you can piggyback 2 or 3 chips to overdrive a bad one. Back in those early days of the IBM PC, they actually used piggybacked RAM chips soldered together on some of their boards. One had an active low select line and the other had an active high select line so it actually used both of them. I assume it was done due to availability issues for 64K DRAM chips at the time.

Never played SW or ESB but when ROTJ came out, I played the living crap out of this in my small-town arcade. (Waxy's Wheel - Wolseley, SK, Canada). And I was pretty damn good at it, too. I would have been 11 or 12 years old (depending if it was '84 or '85 - can't remember which year it was). Anytime someone got the highest score on a game, the owner or his wife would write your name and your score on a piece of paper, tape it to the marquee, and they'd give you a free bottle of Coke or a bag of chips. Some of the best years of my life. You have an amazing talent at fixing these machines. I couldn't do that if my life depended on me lol. Thanks for posting this and bringing back some cool memories. Keep up the great work.

This version of the film introduces us to the origins of Chunks Baby Ruth, he uses to win over Sloth, the burned map, and what happened to the octopus…it also includes this cabinet when they are heading towards the restaurant with rich stuff buried beneath.

For the old CRT monitors, instead of unplugging them while testing I would reduce the screen current and defocus the beam as much as possible. You can still see if anything good is happening without worrying about burn in or over driving.

And that 4069, it was an RCA Chip, and I know in Old Synthesizers from 1975 to 1983 RCA Chips for Sound are not very reliable by any means back in the 80s, since ARP and Oberheim Synthesizers had problems with RCA Chips, so do check any Arcade Games or Pinball Machines if they contain RCA Chips, because they are known to fail often.

I got this metal detector that keeps a constant humming when I turn on the power. Its ONLY suppose to HUM when your waving it over metal. Any ideas what this could be. I sprayed the potentiometers/knobs with electrical cleaner spray and worked the knobs back and fort... nothing.. still makes constant hum

@daveweston5158
@daveweston5158 5 лет назад
Since you ended up working a bit on the yoke controller, I have a question that has come up once in a while in my travels... To the best of your knowledge, is there a company that makes a reproduction/replacement yoke controller for this, or any of the other Atari games that used a similar controller? And other than the Star Wars games, where else was this controller used?
@LyonsArcade
@LyonsArcade 5 лет назад
Man 1 company made them named "Ram Controls" and it was perfect, but unfortunately the guy was a scam artist and stole a couple hundred thousand dollars from people without shipping them anything. He's still selling stuff and never went to jail so it's considered bad form to give the guy anymore money (plus he may not ship it to you). I believe there was another company that recently started making a perfect repro as well but I don't have any info on them....
@daveweston5158
@daveweston5158 5 лет назад
Fair enough... I'm working on a project for which I can see a demand for this type of control, and was hoping I wouldn't have to engineer it from scratch, and Originals belong with Original Cabinets... :-). I seem to recall a couple of DIY attempts to recreate this control from years and years ago, but I guess there wasn't enough demand... Might you consider doing a video at some point, detailing the inner workings of this particular control? (I remember running into an Atari rep shortly before the release of the first Star Wars game, and them gushing with pride about this new controller they had developed, but they couldn't describe it to me at the time because the game hadn't shipped yet...)

Hi Brownyysnoopy, it's the camera I was using unfortunately, I have new videos coming in the future on a new 1080 camera with much better and louder audio, so it will be fixed in a month or so when the new videos start uploading! Thank you for watching, we appreciate it!

@@LyonsArcade hey...keep making those repair videos...i do repair work on all my electronics and i miss from the good old day when manufacturers provided parts and diagrams for you to fix your own stuff..nowadays everything is a secret...they want you to replace rather than repair...and planned obsolecence is built into all electronics...

Lol @ 17:34 "I'm a weiner" @ 17:55 "so I'm gonna reach around the back". Hahahaha. Dang I wish those stupid arcade 1ups let you adjust the color, brightness, and tint.

You'd think they'd have a menu somewhere, I guess they just want it to be as plug and play as possible.

Do you not have a capacitance tester? Just test the caps, instead of replacing all of them like throwing crap at a wall to see what sticks.

I don't have one Sean, you're much better at this than i am. Thank you for watching!

@@LyonsArcade you can buy one on Amazon pretty cheap. It maybe a piece of electronics equipment that would benefit you greatly since you work on a lot of ttb boards.

Shotgunning lytics on a unit that is over 20yrs old is absolutely acceptable. Most of my time is spent in pre-1980 electronics and old paper is just a time bomb. Fantastic content!

I wouldn't have bothered. I always hated that game! Only joking of course but even with MAME and endless credits I'm still rubbish at it decades on.

Maybe, i'm not sure. I think the boardset was completely different but could have used the same 'engine'...
