so i'm one of your subs that knows NOTHING about sailing, and i somehow still like watching these videos. it's impressive how much y'all know about this stuff and how well you work together.
There are many "cruiser" channels out there that can't sail to save their life. I have a lot of respect for your approach to be sailors first. And also a huge fan of your restoration work content.
I've been sailing since I was 9 years old (for 65 years now!) and when I sail my current boat, a Beneteau 373 which I've had for 19 years I do exactly what you do when we get underway. You did an excellent job of describing it. Really enjoy your channel.
This is a great video to remind me that I’d MUCH rather watch you sail, than to actually do it myself. Maybe when I was much younger but I’ll enjoy watching you in my latter years thank you….
If you're trying to figure out what content people like the most I'll give you my quick take from most to least favorite (I'm middle aged, male, mechanically inclined) 1. Boat systems work - installing components, repairs, upgrades etc. 2. Sailing related - passages, passage prep etc. 3. Exploring places - on shore explorations etc. 4. Water sports activities - diving, fishing etc.
Hi guys, really appreciate today’s video, for us non sailors ,sometimes it’s kind of a mystery all those terms , lines and sails! You did a fantastic explanation of the basics of sailing a catamaran, and the ways you go about it. 👍👍👍 P.S. All your videos are always amazing 🫶
Always interesting to learn new things. Impressed there are folks like you that are interested in sailing. If ocean water navigation is ever needed, I would appreciate having you on board. (Knowledge with experience).
Sierra, thanks for bringing up smart relevant questions about the tell-tales. And, Billy, for your thorough answer, which wasn't too far over the heads of those still learning. Excellent episode. Thanks for sharing.
Your explanation on sailing was for beginner sailors but you used the terminology of a knowledgeable sailor which would have lost all the beginners. Always look forward to what you guys are up to.💕🍻
I thought this was a nice mix of planning, sailing, and instruction. Given that you had a long "close reach" section that was cut, maybe include a little of that with the sailing tweaks about tuning the boat / rig, including wind speed vs boat speed, so there would be a little more of a sailing tutorial. I'm enjoying the videos.
Another great upload! Maybe one cool idea could be a Picture in Picture in the corner of your screen showing your wind speed, how fast you're going, etc. It's kinda fun to follow along with that for us geeky people. Not sure if you could do a screen record of it or have to set up another camera.
I love these how to vids because let's face it 80% of us are watching from our couch and don't know shit about sailing Like I always wondered if you need to go south but the wind is blowing north are you screwed 🤷♂️ 🙏❤️👊🏼🇺🇸
Nice job explaining apparent wind, telltales and getting the boat sailing, in a simple commentary. It's pretty easy to get lost in the physics of it all, and probably not interesting except to nerds like me, LOL. I'm also glad to see your sheeet attachment to the clew at the highest position, meaning the most tension on the jib leech. I see SO many of these roller furlers with a leech that is too loose, (= slow) and the sails look terrible at anything but hard on the wind. Most of them really need a barber hauler when let out on a broad reach or run, to maintain leech tension. A good leech = better speed.
I have watched every single episode. I wouldn’t want you to do this every time, but as somebody who used to sail Sunfish sailboats and knew what worked but not why I absolutely appreciate this type of video. Whether you are repairing something or sailing please don’t just tell us what you are doing but the why. You both have a “teachers” mind and are great at explaining things so anyone can understand. Can’t wait for your next adventure. I always learn something and for that I am eternally grateful. You all are doing what I would have done 40 years ago had I known it could be done. ( of course back then it was a lot harder to earn a buck while traveling). Keep it up, you three are awesome!
Excellent video for those like me that are new to sailing. I can understand it could be boring for experienced sailors but to have a “how to” thrown in now and again is great idea. Love your other videos as well 😊
While you lost me pretty early on in the ‘how to’, I still really enjoyed this video. My dad would have loved watching you sail. He was a Captain for Beneteau and would sail and deliver new boats to the islands. I’m sure he's looking down with a smile and understood everything you guys did. Thanks for taking us along! Smooches for Jetty!!
Great video! You too are so in love and it shows in your videos! Amazing how you seemed to fit right into your new boat! Another RU-vid couple just got a new Seawind and they are totally lost on how to sail it!
I like the idea of securing the main halyard to the back of the boom at anchor. We usually tie ours to a shroud, but we are going to try your way next time out.
Love love love this. As a land lubber and a fantasizing boater, I live vicariously thought you and Sierra. FYI. You two were my very first "follow" on RU-vid many many years ago. I love your vids!
Hii..Nice to see your boat,i love catamaran...and your adventure.i've sailing cat too more than 10 years...tqsm,enjoy your sailing. Love sailing from Malaysia...Umaira.
Loved the video. Maybe you could show how you tack and jibe, reef the main. I imagine how hard work is to make videos while maneuvering, but it would be appreciated. Happy sail for you.
I don't know if it will help me out because I'll probably never own a sail boat because my wife doesn't like the water. I do however, find it interesting and who knows my son-in-law has a Pace 27 that he may get on the water one of these days. Keep the good stuff coming guys and give Jetty a pat on the head and a treat for me.
I enjoy this format of video. Not necessarily “tutorial based” but more along the lines of day in the life and what means to actually get the boat up and ready to sail. I for one enjoyed it! Every boat is different with different systems so it’s nice to see in my eyes. But I still love the adventure as well. A few of these mixed in time to time would be awesome!
Very helpful thank you. I learn a lot watching your videos. This time it was how to stash the main halyard to prevent banging on the mast while at anchor!
Hey guys…I recently became a sub a couple months ago. Motor boater for 40+ years, never got into the “how to” of sailing.. Love this Vid! GREAT INFO!! Thank you for the education and great channel!
Fantastic. Tks for the details. Next time, if possible, tell us about what and how you read all the instruments for motor running. Greetings from Zurich.
QUESTION w a new boat theres always a list of items that need fixing or replaced by the manufacturer that you find out after weeks of being underway. Can you share the process and what items or issues you have run into. Also, can u update the repair job, how you liked it, befor and after, etc. Thanks
Do you have a jib barberhauler system on the boat? We have a Dragonfly 32 trimaran and we are using our jib barberhauler as soon as we start to bear away from a close reach through a broad reach. It’s the only way to get all the telltales flying top to bottom on the luff of the sail and not have too much twist in the leech. It’s also good for the health of the sail as you don’t get the floppy leech thing that can lead to premature wear and tear on the sail. Nice boat!
I hope you don't have to come about too quickly to head north! But when you do, be mindful of the Outer Banks! They don't call them the graveyard of the Atlantic for nothing... I wonder if this years El Nino had anything to do with the light fishing catch this year. I guess they call it fishing and not catching for a reason. You crushed the lobster though!!!
Pretty sweet video. It's not that different from other content. The "boring" crew would probably enjoy the video if you labeled it something else. "35 Miles To Go", "Woah def wont learn anything here", "Big day on the water", "Certainly not a tutorial on how to sail", "if you think this is boring try sailing for 6 hours" (side note seeing a lot of top "boring" comments on other videos as well not sure why jerks are getting upvoted.) Would you ever do a slow sailing video? I enjoy having those on while i work. thanks for the content.
I really like the video sailed in my younger days but lot more work than that ,so if ever in do or die situation I think I could get your boat from point B to point A if had to 😅😅😅😅LOL
Great video, but I still have a question about apparent wind. What is it, and why is it important? Can you explain in detail in your next video?:¬) Webhead USA
First up, you can’t measure true wind - only apparent wind - and the system estimates the true wind provided you’ve got your instruments calibrated and your log in measuring speed through the water). Secondly, and most importantly, Apparent wind is important as that’s what the sails feel. And they give drive based on what they feel and you have to trim the sails to what they’re feeling. They don’t know/care what the true wind is doing so a good sailor spends 99% of the time looking at apparent wind speed and speed wind angle (and 1% of the time looking at what the instruments say that weather is doing to the wind - which you can tell by looking at the sea state anyway)
Greetings. I have a question for you all 3 of you (yes Jetty is included). Can a 64 year young female (no pronouns here), who has been sailing from the age 7 to now (with 20 + Racing trophies under her belt), sail this Cat solo with my dear friend (a dog)? I love mono-hauls, but I do not like how the stairs are short and step. My 🐕 can not use them. This video is perfect for newbies and even old salty dogs. Your response is important to me. Happy Sailing ⛵
