How we share our Starlink Internet across our farm with Mesh Wifi, on the cheap!

We have Starlink for our internet service on our homestead, and we love it! The problem is that we need internet access across more area than a single wifi router will give us. Repeaters dont do a good job and are clunky, so we have implemented a mesh wifi across our farm, using 10 access points. We even use solar panels to power one of them in a pasture where we don’t have electricity.
This video is a very high-level overview of how we got mesh wifi on our farm for a minimal investment.
This is the product we reference in the video:

*** About Gooseberry Bridge Farm ***
Gooseberry Bridge Farm is located in the Ozark Mountains of Southwest Missouri. We moved from the typical “house at the end of a cul-de-sac in a subdivision” in 2016 to our little 11.6 acre farm and haven’t looked back!
We are a multi-generation homestead raising our 6 children, and strive to provide our kids with rich experiences and a strong work ethic that will benefit them through their lives.
In addition to producing and preserving as much of our own foods as possible, we also operate a you-pick flower farm with different varieties of flowers throughout the year. Our goal is to be as self sufficient as possible, within the boundaries of what is realistic in today’s world.
Our intention is to post 2 new videos a week, but first and foremost we are operating an actual operating homestead with goats, sheep, chickens, ducks, rabbits, pigs, quail, fruits, vegetables, flowers, and more. Our intention is to make our videos relevant, meaningful, and to depict an accurate portrayal of our homestead journey - and hopefully educate folks a little bit along the way.

Thanks for the video and explaining everything in plain language. I have some questions…. About how far away are the units? I’m thinking of using those to get WiFi into my barn for the birthing cameras. Only problem is the barn metal siding and metal roof which is a signal killer. Any thoughts? Are these strong enough to get inside? Barn is roughly 100 ft from the house. I liked how you built a box for the unit. Was thinking I could build a box outside one of the barn windows? Or can you recommend an antenna that would come through the roof or wall? That is easy enough for a common person to set up that is….
@gooseberrybridgefarm
@gooseberrybridgefarm 2 года назад
100' is plenty close to work. I have some over 200' and they work fine. The metal building can be an issue. The units that I use have 2 wired ethernet ports on each unit, and you can use ethernet for backhaul (to connect the units) rather than WiFi. So, what you could do is have one in your house, one on the outside of the barn (as long as you can protect it from weather, and another one inside the barn connected to the outside one via Cat5/Cat6 cable. This way, you are not reliant on pushing a wireless signal through the metal barn.

Did you use the starlink router's wi-fi to supply the Barn with internet, and through the AUX port to house, to power the Mesh for the rest of your farm sir?
@gooseberrybridgefarm

Yes - the first Deco Mesh AP is plugged into the port on the Starlink AP, and the rest connect wirelessly. If you are close to the Starlink AP you would see 2 SSIDs - the one from Starlink and the Farm WiFi.

I’m going to do something similar. I have to put Dishy in a field so we get the least amount of obstructions. I will run a Ethernet cable from Dishy to the house into a mesh node, then into a switch which will distribute everything to the other buildings we have on the property. There could be some long Ethernet runs (almost 300 ft) so hopefully everything will work out right

@gooseberrybridgefarm
@gooseberrybridgefarm 3 года назад
Great question. We are seeing a little degradation of speed after 4 hops, but in fairness, one of those hops is very long, so the problem may be a signal strength issue more than a number-of-hops issue. I haven't pushed the issue since I'm happy with the 25 meg speeds I'm getting there. A friend who is very wise in the way of this stuff told me that with heavy utilization, processor strength on the APs will become a problem, but it hasn't been an issue for me. Something to keep in mind if you're sharing with dozens of people using it at the same time.

Great video, thanks. Couple of questions: I have just received my Starlink and now get over 200 meg at my cabin. I want to get internet in my shop which has an underground cat5 cable back to my cabin. I have tried plugging an old Airport Express into the Starlink router but only get 60 meg (ONLY??!!). Would the puck give better performance? Second question; My cabin is a fair way from the road which has my gate. Using the mesh system is there way whereby I could rig up an intercom system or even a doorbell so that visitors or delivery drivers could notify me that they are at the gate?
@gooseberrybridgefarm
@gooseberrybridgefarm 2 года назад
Hello! All good questions. The first thing I'd check is the maximum possible throughput of the Airport Express. It may be limited to 100 Meg. If that is the case, 60 is a pretty reasonable number. The other question is more nuanced. I have the Deco pucks in some parts of my farm where they are 150' away between buildings with line-of-sight, and I get 150 meg or more (depending on what Starlink is providing at that moment). I have another area that is 200' away with trees in the way, and I wasn't getting more than 20 meg ever. I recently ran Cat 6 to that location (I buried the cable, so I used Shielded Direct-bury rated cable), and now I get 150+. I'd say that if you have the ability to connect the Deco units via Cat5 or Cat6, do it. They have 2 RJ45 jacks and can use them for backhaul or peripherals, so use them when you can - It's always (in my experience) better to be wired than wireless when you have a chance! I hope this helps :)

Thank you for your video and how you set this up. We are in a similar situation and are currently paying more then starlink for not so good internet. I am waiting for my Starlink to ship. I am in a zone that they are running but was a little late in getting my order in. I am very interested in your setup as I am looking to cover several building at our farm. I have a couple of questions for you. You mentioned in one of the comments that you are running the starlink router at the green house and then wire over to your mesh system in your house. Technically you are running two wifi signals on your network, does this create a double Nat? How did you get around this?
@gooseberrybridgefarm
@gooseberrybridgefarm 3 года назад
The two wifi signals aren't what necessarily causes double NAT, but we do have double NAT. The Starlink network is 192.168.1.0/24. I plug the Mesh wifi into the LAN port of the Starlink router, and its network is 192.168.0.0/24. The TP Link network is going through multiple layers of NAT, but that doesn't really cause problems other than another hop and adds a minimal and unnoticeable amount of latency. I could skip the Starlink router, but since Starlink uses CG-NAT, technically I'd be using double NAT no matter what, and now I'm actually running triple-NAT. YMMV but it is working for us. I'm testing a new failover to cover potential downtime and clean up the IP messiness. Once I have that perfected I'll post a new video about it. Thanks for watching!!

I have been trying to figure out a simple way to broadcast my Starlink WiFi to a larger area on my property and will be using your link buy the TP-Link M5 units from Amazon. Thank you! I’m glad you found this useful. As long as you have electricity where you need it, I’m confident in this solution. As far as the cable, the Deco comes with a standard Cat 5 cable and it works fine. You only need one to plug into Starlink - beyond that it’s completely wireless. It can be the one that comes with the units or one you have (specifically, the one you use now with your current setup, just repurposed would work). We appreciate your support, and the kind words are heartening!

Is there a minimum distance the first deco mesh should be placed away from the starlink router?
@gooseberrybridgefarm
@gooseberrybridgefarm 3 года назад
Good question. I’m sure that the books would tell you a distance, but from a practical standpoint, I’ve had 2 APs (which is really all we are talking about here) stacked on top of each other with no ill effect. They will modify their frequencies as to not step on each other’s toes. For reference: you don’t have to use the Starlink router ( really just an access point). It provides no true value-add. The true “router” is built into Dishy so technically you can plug the wire from the PoE injector directly into the primary Deco. That said, I do have mine running in-line just for troubleshooting purposes and it causes no ill effect. My Starlink AP and my first deco are about 3’ apart, but you can just skip that if you don’t have a need or desire for it.

The second deco mesh unit was connected with 120v power at an exterior wall nearest my out-building shop. The third deco mesh unit was connected to 120v and located in my shop. My wi-fi coverage is now about 175’ from the Starlink router. Thanks for your video!

Great video. I'm thinking of getting starlink and installing it in the barn then installing a deco at the garage 200 feet away and then another at the house which is another 100 feet - Do you see any problems with these distances? We have security cameras in the barn and I'm wondering if I can plug that system into an aux in the deco if it has one or should I be using a separate router and grabbing a signal from the barn deco? We are using Poe for the cameras. Thanks
@gooseberrybridgefarm
@gooseberrybridgefarm 3 года назад
Hi Bill! I dont see an issue with that, providing that the 200' span is relatively clear of obstructions. You may see depredated speeds (loss of 25-50%) if you start pushing the limits but for what you're talking about doing it should be fine. I have a span over 200' with trees in between them and it is noticeably slower, but works. As far as the cameras go, what you suggest should work fine. Mine are all wifi based, but you could plug in with the ports on the Deco units. They have 2 ports and they can be used for backhaul to another Deco, or for devices. I have a printer plugged into one of mine, and a network switch plugged into another in order to connect multiple non-wifi devices, so what you suggest should be fine. And, introducing PoE should be fine as long as you utilize proper surge suppression. Good luck!!

@gooseberrybridgefarm
@gooseberrybridgefarm 2 года назад
If the buildings are within a couple hundred feet, you would get some of the mesh units and plug one into the Starlink, and connect additional ones in the outlying buildings. They will connect to the main one over one wifi link while broadcasting their own signal out for your devices!

@gooseberrybridgefarm
@gooseberrybridgefarm Год назад
Thanks for watching! Strength from one AP to the next is really a question of distance and obstacles. Just like with signal strength to clients, the signal between units varies based on the environment. If you have the ability to run Cat5 or Cat6 between the buildings, it would solve the issue by utilizing a wired Ethernet backhaul, but that isnt always an option. If it isnt' then I'd just focus on getting as clear of a line of sight as possible between them!

@gooseberrybridgefarm
@gooseberrybridgefarm 2 года назад
Hi! Some trial and error, and some instinct since I've done this professionally for years. Just start with the rule of thumb that they'll go a couple hundred feet with no obstructions, and every obstruction (wall, tree, etc) reduces that distance. Then, play with it. just move them closer, further, left, right, etc until you get a better signal. Also, mine that run outside work better in the winter, and I have more issues in the spring/fall when the leaves come on the trees. Its not an exact science.

Question: I found you because I'm looking for a connectivity issue. We have Starlink in the house. I connected a 2nd Starlink node via PoE switch & ethernet to our separate garage. When I walk from the house on a zoom call, it's fine walking to the garage, but when I walk back to the house, it doesn't switch nodes back to the Starlink router in the house. I thought turning off wifi on my phone & then back on while in the house would force it to reconnect to the house node, but that doesn't seem to work. The garage is about 75'? feet from the house if that makes a difference (the signals don't overlap). Thoughts? I have a eero 6+ 3 node mesh network (prior to getting Starlink), and tried to use that with our initial Starlink node, but I couldn't get that to work. I didn't try to pair it with Starlink, so maybe that was the problem. I'm fine using a different router than Starlink - just want this to work!
@gooseberrybridgefarm
@gooseberrybridgefarm 2 месяца назад
Hi! I don't have experience with the Starlink mesh network. While I use Deco, the Eero should work just the same. I ran mine behind the starlink router - but it was using double NAT, which is suboptimal, but it worked for me. It won't work for everyone. That is what I can speak to but it sounds like what you're doing 'should' work. There are so many nuanced variables at play that it would be difficult to offer much valuable advice beyond that. Best of luck!

Hi there! I've been planning a follow-up video to address a lot of the questions that have been asked about this video. Short answer- I've never used Orbi, but when I was researching what to put in, I ultimately chose Deco over Orbi partly because of price, and any features it had over Deco were not of consequence to me. I also like that Deco is smaller, has lower power consumption, and (I am guessing here, because I've never tested them side-by-side) the Deco looks like it will do better in extreme temperatures. Mine have operated everywhere between -20F to +110F with no issues. Thanks for watching and stay tuned for that follow-up, and I'll go over the wiring, as well as some updates I've made to my system!

@gooseberrybridgefarm
@gooseberrybridgefarm 2 года назад
Hi! It really depends on the link distance between each hop. 500m will be hard to cover with just mesh, but could be handled with a P2P wireless connection. The Deco units that i use will go about 300m unobstructed, and they can also support a wired ethernet backhaul if you could run cable between them. If you're looking at too much distance, you might consider a point to point wireless like this one. I've used this one and it worked great over about a 600 meter span, and should go a few miles if you have line of sight. amzn.to/3qf8y8l

@gooseberrybridgefarm
@gooseberrybridgefarm Год назад
The distances aren't unreasonable, but are on the edges of being workable. At that distance, I'd be worried about obstacles. If it is a metal barn or if there are any trees or other obstructions, you won't have much wiggle-room at that distance. You might consider a wireless bridge between buildings - it would serve the same purpose as running an invisible ethernet cable between the longer hauls. I have another video where I installed a bridge to a location several hundred feet away, and put another mesh unit there. It extended the network great, and it was a pretty cheap fix! Good luck!

Hi Christine. I've never used Orbi, but there is no reason it should not work with Starlink. If you have the new Square Dishy, you will have to have the Starlink Ethernet Adapter to connect the Orbit to the Starlink, but it should be pretty plug and play. As far as I know, it will not do a wireless bridge to Starlink so you will have to have the adapter. If you have the original round Dishy, then you can just plug directly into the Starlink WiFi router - which is how I connect my Decos. Hope this helps, and good luck!

I have 9 of them on my network, so they are of varying distances. The shorter hauls (and least amount of obstructions) get better throughput, while one that pushes the limits of the connection from a distance perspective gets less. Generally, about 200' unobstructed doesn't seem to cost me any speed. I have one stretch that runs about 300' and it maxes out at about 25x25 meg, but it's still plenty for my purposes, and not worth running cable or dealing with solar power in the middle. Also, the more hops you have to make across the mesh wifi, you'll lose speed because of the processor capabilities the unit. Remember that these particular devices are designed for home use and not heavy-duty data pounding. The longest stretch i have goes out 4 units deep, and I do notice that it taxes the system when that far unit gets hammered. I hope this helps!

Hi, can you clarify if any or all the TP Link extender needs to be plugged in the router? I don't understand how just connecting them in the electricity can pick up and distribute the wifi signal? Ideally I would like to keep my Starlink router and there are no additional connections to it. Thank you
@gooseberrybridgefarm
@gooseberrybridgefarm 2 года назад
The mesh network starts by plugging the first one (the master) into the starlink router. Then, the additional ones connect to it wirelessly, and distribute the wifi signal to your devices on another wireless channel. The ancillary units (not the master) can be just plugged into electricity and redistribute the signal, all wirelessly.

Not necessarily. The ones that I'm using are in place of the Starlink ones. They are both good products and I made this video before Starlink offered their option. Also, The one that I use will let you have up to 10 nodes, which is good for greater geographic distribution. If you're having trouble connecting, I'd recommend getting on a Starlink facebook or Reddit group. I'm in a couple of them and there are lots of people there with experience with the Starlink one. Unfortunately I just haven't played with one and wont be much help in troubleshooting.

Many forums are not giving a lot of help, I think you have answered what I needed but wanted to make sure its as simple as it sounded. I have a gen2 with the added ETH port. I am looking just to add one extension point for right now as its from one camper to a second while we work on building some cabins on some land. I have a 200foot Cat6e outdoor rated cable from one camper to the second and was just going to plug in the mesh AP over there. is it really that simple? have you tested any bandwidth issues on this? I tired a second AC750 travel router as a AP and it works but the speeds are 1/10 of the other site. looking for low power as its all off solar so this may just be the ticket! thank you.

If you're connecting with 200' of ethernet cable, then you should not have any bandwidth issues. If you're connecting 200' wirelessly, and there are obstructions then yes - you're likely to have some degradation of speeds. Check out my follow up video to this one where I added ethernet cable on a long haul to take care of this very issue.

Great video - We have a heavily wooded property with 5 buildings that I would like to connect to a starlink network - given the trees will reduce the distance that the signal will travel, would it be best to hardwire the access points together? what is the distance that the signal can travel over a wired connection? Thank you
@gooseberrybridgefarm
@gooseberrybridgefarm 9 месяцев назад
It's hard to answer without seeing your environment but overall, if you are able to run Cat5 or Cat6 cable, then you're always going to be better off to do so. Since I made this video I've put in cable for many of my links. Distance limitations for Ethernet are generally about 100 meters. That can change a bit depending on type of cable, interference, and some other factors, but 100 meters is a general rule of thumb.

@gooseberrybridgefarm 2 года назад
Hi John! Unfortunately, most Mesh systems that I'm familiar with require a wired ethernet connection to serve as your WAN interface (internet connection). I'm not aware of one that serves as a wireless bridge for your WAN connection. That being said, if you are up for it, Ive seen designs on reddit that people have employed using a Raspberry Pi as a wireless bridge to serve the exact use you are trying to do. It connects to the Starlink router wirelessly, and then you plug the Deco or other mesh/router into the RJ45 port on the Raspberry Pi. I've not done it personally but people say it works well, if you can get your hands on a Pi for a good price, and if you're technically inclined to take on such a project. They've gotten kind of expensive due to all the supply chain issues. Check this out for instructions: www.reddit.com/r/raspberry_pi/comments/sl4yvu/got_starlink_lan_adapter_is_back_ordered_til/ Here is a sample Raspberry Pi that would work: amzn.to/36WR5LP Good Luck and let me know what ends up happening with your setup!

@gooseberrybridgefarm

Hi! It really depends on how much data is being pulled. Theoretically, you could have a hundred devices on your network. They simply share the amount of bandwidth, or speed, that is available. If you have a handful of power users pulling a lot of data, then it just comes out of the pool that everyone shares.

Metal buildings are difficult. My barn is faced with tin and it has very little signal from outside. What you can do is have one of these on the outside, and another one on the inside, and connect them with a piece of Cat5 or Cat6 network cable, so they communicate via the cable rather than wifi. The one inside will then be able to service inside of the barn and hand the signal outside via the cable. It's not the cheapest workaround, but it should work.

We’re trying to get our Starlink wifi to extend to our shop across the driveway. Theres already a trench dug that we can run an Ethernet cable through. We’re looking for something that can be connected with that Ethernet cable in the trench, while still having multiple Ethernet outputs and wifi capabilities. We’re not sure if we should use a mesh wifi extender, but I have yet to find one that can be connected by Ethernet. Or if we should just get a switch for the shop but we’d also like wifi for phones and other devices. We’d like to connect a device like a wifi extender or a switch in the shop with the Ethernet cable in the trench to reduce as much packet loss as possible, rather than using a wireless connection across the driveway like a wifi bridge. We’d like to run an Ethernet cable from the starlink router in the house to across the driveway into the shop but we just don’t know what will be the best option to have Ethernet access and wifi access in the shop without losing any speed from the starlink.

On those, I have no loss. One is 220' and the other is 240', putting the furthest one 460' from the original one and it still gets the same speeds I get at the source. The Starlink provided router does not give you the abilities you are asking for, but you can use any type of router to use in place of it. Hi Larry. I've never use the Deco S4. Mine are all the Deco M5, but I would imagine they should work the same .?.? I have mine generally hooked up as you do, through the Aux port on the Starlink router. You could try bypassing the Starlink router to test. It is optional, after all. I use mine in-line but have bypassed it a couple of times in testing. Also and alternatively, Since Starlink is handing out IP on the 192.168.1.X subnet, it is possible that your S4 is as well. While this 'can' work it can also cause problems. Double NAT works (I have it going on in my network) but doing NAT between the same addresses can cause wonkiness. You might try changing the LAN IP subnet on your Deco network to something like 192.168.2.X and then reset everything. Please let me know if either of those suggestions help!
