In this video, I'm sharing how we achieved giving our band in ear monitors while our mixer only had a couple of outputs for the stage and how you can do the same if you're not planning on changing out your mixing console.

IEMs aren't a requirement for a quiet stage. I've been a performing musician for 43 years. And I perform in church frequently. In my 3 piece classic rock band, we use electronic drums and ampless guitar and bass rigs. Two of us choose to use IEMs. I do not. Since I mix our sound from stage, I need to be able to walk out into the audience from time to time to hear the main mix. I can't do that wearing IEMs. So I use a powered wedge monitor. My wedge monitor is typically not that loud. I only need just enough monitor volume to hear all instruments and vocals clearly in comparison to the amount of FOH that is audible from stage. The drums are key. Any time acoustic drums are used, they are so loud that they determine the necessary volume for all other sound sources. Take away acoustic drums, stage volume drops drastically.

@@tlb2732 Totally agree, however I have to say I really don’t like electronic drums. We’ve played with cheap sets and very expensive sets and I’m just not a fan. But IEM, I’d rather have a good monitor mix in a wedge as you stated. Thanks for the comment!
