Thanks for the video. My experience in Pentecostal circles is that worship includes much more than music - lots of spontaneous verbal and kinesthetic praise, lots of spontaneous prayer, lots of speaking to one another in Psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (speaking, not always singing), and lots of Scripture reading and personal testimonies. I've also heard lots of teaching from the pulpit that being offering our bodies as living sacrifices is our spiritual act of worship (Romans 12). Yes, the idea that God inhabits the praises of his people is mentioned occasionally, but I have not usually seen that to be out of balance with other elements.

The best way to encounter the Presence of God is to seek Him, Worship Him. You can do this at home, at church, in nature. God is with us always. "when you seek me you will find me." I was raised in a Southern Baptist church so I love the hyms. I have attended Holy Spirit filled churches and been on praise teams with contemporary music. I like them too. It is worship. I can tell you when we are singing and I feel the Holy Spirit, as soon as the electric guitar starts a solo the feeling leaves. It just becomes music. So while I like the music it should be to glorify and worship God and not ourselves. One thing I hope you address is a dress code for praise teams. I have always said, God doesn't care what we wear, He wants our heart. But as I have been invited to visit churchs lately for a special music or program I am distracted by their dress. A crop top or just last week the main singers jeans were soooo tight you could see (every) outline of her body. It made me uncomfortable! We are there to honor God. We always pray before we sing and ask God for all eyes to be on Him and not on us. 🙌🙌🙌

Great discussion on an important point. To clarify: Affective means “related to the emotions or affections”, not “best”. My understanding of Jager is that music is the form of worship best suited to speak to our emotions and affections. In other words, it has a felt impact in that we “feel” or “sense” God’s presence. So he’s not saying music is the most superior form of worship full-stop; he’s saying that, if you want people to have an “encounter experience” or “sense of God’s presence” , music is the best way to do that. Whether encounter is or is not the goal of worship is still the question.

I remember the video you did on Psalms 22:3... still think this verse is generally misinterpreted and being misused by the majority of churches in the "modern worship" scene. The verse flow of Ps. 22:3 means it should be interpreted as "Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One; you are the one Israel praises." (NIV translates it this way) And if this is the case, everything built on the theology of "God inhabits the praises of His people" is incorrect. Does that mean we shouldn't praise with music? Of course not. But the fundamental theology of *why* we worship changes everything.

I still resist using the word “worship” when referring to music. I still prefer to call it the “song service”, and I call myself a “song leader” or something. I distinctly remember when the language changed in my church in the 90s and I never agreed with the language change.

So I was first exposed to the Christian faith through a Quaker context. They do some really weird stuff but some of it is weird because it is biblical (like probably every denomination). One good thing is everything the church does is meant to lead its members in worship - even the business meetings. So when I am now in the nondenominational/pentecostal world it’s a lot easier to think of the music as simply one way to worship and not the only way to worship. But I find your thoughts insightful and helpful for understanding what many of my fellow believers take for granted because of some faulty theology. I hope to check out the psalm 22:3 video

I’m a new worship leader from a non denominational church, Pentecostal background. I have been struggling with the mainstream type worship. It seems so self focused. Not so much the lyrics, but right words, wrong spirit, maybe?? My Pastor has asked for more scripture to be read during our corporate prayer times and he always uses a lot of scripture in his sermons. I have been trying to incorporate more planned scripture into worship and moving away from songs that are feelings more than the word of God. I always try to open with prayer… before we offer God our songs we bow before him with our hearts and declare Him to be the King of kings and Lord of lords. I have gotten some criticism from past worship members that I talk too much and need to focus on the songs. I guess we just have different perspectives, but my Pastor hasn’t asked me to do anything different so I guess it’s ok. I just want to bring worship to Jesus ❤️‍🔥

Part of how we turned worship in music I think was by calling music worship. In an attempt be pietistic about music by calling it that. It doesn’t need to be that way . All of our life is Worship. Music is just a part of a worshipful life……. Just like washing dishes.

Worship is proskuneo / shachah so - prostration. Worship is also not the right translation for Romans 12:1 - 'service' is a more appropriate word. Religious leaders want worship to be related to church attendance. The institutional church has been trying to obfuscate this term for thousands of years. Worship is actually a very personal thing.
