Does rain affect this method at all? I'd love to get cows, but for now I'll live vicariously watching you raise them so when I get some, I'll know what I'm doing. Great videos.

I built a round bale unrolled that attaches to my tractors three point hitch. Works great.

We just roll out what will be eaten in one day.

Looking good Chuck and glad the cattle expansion is working out both on the operation side and sales. I've got a guess what you and JW are planning but I'll just have to wait for the next episode.

That looks like some real good hay. Small bales but real good quality. Growing up, we always used hay rings. Every few days daddy would change feeding locations to other poor areas of the pasture. They wasted too much hay when we fed without a ring. They’d pee and poo all over it and then trample it into the dirt. Judys got some great regenerative ideas but I just can’t see using quality hay like that to get the job done. I could see doing that to old or low quality hay. Y’all have some really good looking steers. How many head of steers and heifers do y’all keep through the winter? We always sold most of ours at the end of fall or right when winter set in. Daddy didn’t want to feed them through winter. The cows would drop new babies come early Spring and the cycle started all over again. We kept 30 to 40 cows and a good bull all the time. The older cattle rotated out in the fall when we sold the steers and heifers. We only kept the heifers from good cows. That helped keep the herd healthy.

Im impressed ! Someone whom uses the smaller bales !!!!!! Been using 4x4 bales for 30 some years. Easy to handle...and when using a round bale feeder you have very little mudding around it because they eat the bale in a very short time. Ive always moved my bale feeder every time I feed them. No real issues. Greg Judy.......talks about spreading seed by unrolling the bales. But......my hay has no seed in it. During the winter time I try to provide good quality hay for the cows. Hay thats been cut every 30 days or less. Therefore........no seed. Poor quality hay..... yes.... seeds. But during the winter cows eat much less high quality hay and much easier to stay warm. But you do live down south.

Would it be possible to shove a 2” pipe (same diameter as the hay spear) through the center and run 20-25’ of wire cable through the pipe to drag the bale with your UTV or tractor? Just a thought.

Can never say a bad thing about a working tractor with some good bale spears. Sure u can do it all without a tractor. But man does a tractor simplify that process.

Id rather put as much feed / hay through the cow / animal focusing on a much more readily usable fertilizer then allowing animals to stomp hay into the ground. Granted... hay is fertility.
