How we use the rule of thirds in our STREET PHOTOGRAPHY

In the first episode of a new series on composition in our street photographs, we look at the rule of thirds. This compositional idea seems to be having a hard time on RU-vid, but it's the compositional standard for the movie industry and offers a lot to the street photographer.
Jeff takes you through how we use thirds to make sense of complex scenes and to give impact to our photographs.

While I have taking photos for a while, I never really understood the rule of thirds properly until I saw this video and how things are supposed to come together. Thank you . For a short video, its taught me a lot.

Im willing to accept that rule of thirds does produce images that are pleasing to look at and i think that the more experienced the photographer, the more likely that when reviewing images, the main players will conform to the rule. But i think the rule is often applied sub-consciously rather than with planning. Its easy to draw line on an image to intersect points of interest retrospectively but in reality, we dont have time (especially in street photography) to consciously apply the rule of thirds. Its, in my opinion, instinctive and comes from experience. Rules of composition can more easily be applied in landscape photography where there is usually time to set up leading lines, diagonals and s curves etc. In street photography, i would say, the more we practise, the luckier we get.

Yes. I agree. This is all applied subconsciously when shooting. I did mention that in the video but decided to edit it out as I felt it seemed arrogant in some way. Basically, if something is pleasing to the eye, we press the shutter. What’s interesting is why that image is pleasing and by breaking it down I can get a better understanding of how things work visually. For me at least, this is an interesting exercise.

Someone didn’t come up with the rule of thirds. It wasn’t in some brief. The great works of art all confirm (consciously or otherwise) to the rule of thirds. 99% of images posted on social media are so bad that they would do well to observe this rule at least.

I would recommend that the rule of thirds be only used as a guide and isn't something that is carved in stone. Please don't feel that an image is incorrectly composed or "wrong" if the main subject of interest in an image doesn't fall within a third of that image. A lot of the time you can tell if a composition works by instinct. It just feels right even if the rule of thirds doesn't apply. There are times when a photographer wishes to create tension by having the subject fall off the edge of a picture completely. By the way, I always have my camera's 3x3 grid turned on but I don't get too hung up with it.

Thanks Simon. When I started learning photography 35 years ago, composition was an important part of the process. It helped me to understand why one photograph worked and another didn’t. There wasn’t any hard or fast rules just guides. Those guides will be discussed as we go through the series. Thirds is the most common and basic guide which is why we started with that one first.

Love this if only because as a new digital photographer, I used film until in my 20's then drifted away from the hobby, I have discovered the rule of thirds grid and have intuitively started using the horizontal and vertical zones to delineate the shot as well as the intersections. It's great to see that this is a technique used by experienced photographers.

Thanks for this. I enjoyed it and found it informative. I do a lot of street shooting, these days I often have the golden ratio at the back of my mind and try to 'see' main points of interests in that part of the frame.

Nice video again, Jeff. Like most people, I tend to work intuitively and after the event work out the compositional rules that I was implicitly following. On the street, most opportunities appear and disappear so quickly that having a good repertoire of compositions somewhere in my mind can help with finding images. However, I find the most help for me is actually looking at other photographers' work (mostly via books, not IG which I don't like much for photography) as this gives me more ideas about how photographs can be created.

I think it harder to use the one third rule looking if there is a lot of movement in the view finder when taking the shot. Its easier to select images afterward , and apply lines on images in street photography. You could also set up the photo image people to fit the rules, Fair play to you for making the movie anyway.

It is harder. But that’s how we do it. 🙂

Are you aware of any other manufacturers of monochrome digital cameras? The Leicas are lovely, but I'm not sure I can justify the cost for a hobbyist. I really have a hankering to go back to my days of shooting (and developing/printing) B&W and really like the idea of not having Bayer filter in the way.
@WalkLikeAlice
@WalkLikeAlice 11 месяцев назад
@@UnCoolDadonly the Pentax. Tbh most lower resolution digital sensors will give a better Monochrom than something like a Leica M10 Monochrom. The old M8 is far superior for example.

I must be blind to this thirds thing or it’s just something you do without thinking……..as sticking a grid over my pictures often tends to line stuff up. Guess I’ll just have to live with it. Ta.

I'm finding it better to "shoot by feel" but then when I crop in post edit then I worry about thirds & stuff...

Some of these photos are clearly shot from the hip, so I'm not sure you can attribute 'rule of thirds' decision making processes when in effect, they were guesstimated shots - pure reactions to a scene. That doesn't detract from the quality of the photographs, and shows if anything, a good understanding of your focal lengths being used and framing without using a viewfinder. Muscle memory so to speak. Not sure those sort of shots are a good representation of the subject matter you're trying to discuss in this video if I'm honest. Anyone can take a photo and add the golden ratio frame lines on top and rationalise after the fact. That's my thoughts on the matter anyway, for what they're worth.

Our photographs have a structure to them. In this series on composition we are explaining the structure that we apply when shooting. In the second video, I discuss this and I also show the original uncropped versions of the photographs to show that we really are applying these processes when shooting. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pK_JN_It8GQ.html

Street photography is mostly luck. No one person can use rule of thirds in the fast pace of street photography let alone in busy city’s. You fail to mention when you post edit you are cropping to fit elements within rule of thirds. I could be wrong or am I?
@WalkLikeAlice

Yes, you are wrong. Yes, you are wrong again. And wrong again. You clearly have no understanding of what we do or how we do it.

What I've found as a newly, new, or revived interest photographer is that I'll be looking at a scene through the viewfinder and at some point it's as if my finger has subconsciously pressed the shutter when everything is in the 'rule of thirds' zone(s). Doesn't always work out well but sometimes you get a cracking photo without over thinking it.
