When the logs on the summer house expand and contract (and they will) two things can happen - fixed conduit can pull apart, and water ingress. Good to use an s shape flexible conduit section to allow for expansion/contraction of the timber walls. Also be carful not to fix CUs across logs as vertical expansion will split the wood. A cabin this size can expect a 3mm per log expansion so that's 45mm contraction/expansion for the whole wall.
@Cablesmith
@Cablesmith Год назад
appreciate the input, I was always told pvc and wood expansion rates aren’t all that dissimilar, so that along with the non glued joints allows for enough movement. I have been back to a couple of jobs we done a good 2-3 years ago and all still looks good so hopefully may not have many issues. Glad you pointed out the CU tho, that’s something that’s not crossed my mind before so I’ll be cautious on that in future.

Great job - I hate seeing conduit on the inside of the shed. Two quick questions. My log cabin has vertical battens to cover storm braces on the outside which would make it difficult to fix a run of straight conduit. Any reason not to use the Copex all the way round? Also, for 62mm log cabin walls, would you use bell connectors on both sides of the wall? Thanks for a great video.
@Cablesmith
@Cablesmith 6 месяцев назад
No reason not to use copex only it’s not as pleasing to the eye, you can easily bend solid conduit over obstacles tho for a nicer look. Or even just a small section of copex over the obstacles if you’re not confident in bending the conduit, but it’s really really easy. 62mm you could probably use 2 yes. Or female adapters etc

Hi Sean, thanks for another great vid. When installing pvc conduit do you use a pvc cement to glue the parts together?
@Cablesmith
@Cablesmith 2 года назад
i usually do use solvent weld glue yes, but in a summer house i don’t just because it’s a wooden structure and will definitely expand/contract so leave it with a bit of movement. I’ve actually seen some a year on and the conduits have bowed right out due to the contraction. There is drain holes drilled into the bottom of all the conduit boxes on the external just incase of any rogue water getting in, but it’s rather sheltered from the roof overhang anyhow
@rayc1503

How do you guys find out about the little products you use - like the bell connectors for your backboxes. Maybe not them exactly, but do you look through the bookets/pdfs at the suppliers for fun or is it from trade shows or just word of mouth? I know a lot of it's going to get taught as standard and requirements, but these vids someone always seems to show a new nifty product or gadget they'll be using.

I get asked similar to this all the time, and the only real answer is because I’m genuinely so interested in my job,(or I’m just that sad) I spend a lot of time reading, online, catalogues etc just looking at products. Just to go off-topic slightly, I'm guessing this summer house has had to have had permission to be built, as it's less than 1 metre from any boundary...?

Completely unsure on that I’m afraid. It’s not my area tbh so I couldn’t advise. Thanks for watching mate

No permission needed as long as eaves height doesn't exceed 2.5 metres

Great video Sean. Sub and like from me. I am currently planning a summerhouse build. I have armoured cable and consumer unit coming into my old shed. Could you please tell me how much "ballpark" to have this installation done. Just trying to see what costs I will need to factor in. Cheers 👍
@Cablesmith
@Cablesmith Год назад
Hi mate, thanks for the sub. It all depends on the job really but as a ballpark we are usually around £850-1300 for these. that’s always included the armoured cable and consumer unit tho, which sometimes can be £200-300 alone

@@Cablesmith cheers mate, very helpful. I've seen other videos and the inside of the cabins look like the inside of a submarine with all the tubing and cables. Very clean install 👍

haha I take it others have done this then ? Only when it’s on a patio like that, anything else and I’d wash it away with a hose

Not on a 40A supply for the length of cable it wasn’t. Didn’t meet volt drop requirements

@@Cablesmith fair enough although 32a would have been ample for a summer house with a few sockets and a light. Still, good work though.

@@niceguy235uk1 yea would have been fine on a 32A your right, there is a couple of heaters going in there tho, just like to leave a bit of wiggle room for expansion. Thanks dude appreciate you watching also 👌🏼
