I was lucky enough to see the 1st ANOES in the theater when I was 7. Saw the TV ad (and heard the radio ad) and decided I had to see it. All odds were against it but I convinced my dad to take me by telling him it would be like Gremlins (which I'd seen exactly 13 times that summer), and that I would pay for us with my allowance. So we get to the theater, a little late.. we missed the glove making bit but we arrived about when the lamb pops out in Tina's dream. I freaked... turned right around, tried to go back out the door, my dad pulls me back in.. "Nope, sorry, you dragged me all the way out here.. were watching this". Yeah. I was an insomniac for a week.. stopped taking baths too.. showers only (hadn't seen Psycho yet), but I was one of maybe 2 kids in my class that saw it.. so there were my 2nd grade bragging rights. And my dad and I were back in the theater for part 2 the next year.
Lots of characters in media are usually named from people the creators knew, especially ones who tormented them. In The Railway Series (and later Thomas & Friends), Gordon would be named after a boy who was often rude to the author's son, and serves as someone who often puts others down.
Even if the Halloween season is over, I’d love to hear you cover more of these ‘how they were made’ type stories. Personally, I’d love to hear about Ghostface since he’s my second favourite slasher (just short of Michael Myers) but that’s just me.
Ghostface is definitely an interesting genesis. The cloak was almost white. The mask was found while scouting. Countless unused face molds while KNB and Fun World danced around licensing. Even the way the costume functions. Most people don’t know these little details.
I love the orginal Freddy Krueger design, thanks for sharing the audio clips of Robert Englund testing his Freddy Krueger voice, I watched a video that showed him actually in character doing the voice, it was behind the scenes of the original movie A nightmare on elm street.
Actually the sweater colors of red and green are complementary color's (red & green, blue & orange, purple & yellow).... your primary color's are (blue, yellow and red).... your secondary color's are (orange, purple and green). So the complimentary color's are opposite your primary color's, so you have a lot of pull and push with these color pairings that create a huge amount of visual tension on your eye's that make them hard to focus on them while side-by-side..... (purple & yellow are the easiest on your eye's, while blue & orange are the hardest on your eye's, leaving red & green right in the middle).
I have those rough test audio of Robert doing Fred! It was released on a special Laserdisc and 2 taped VHS Collector's Edition back in 96. I always loved the dirty hobo look he had going on on the original. It was truly a fresh new look on a killer where he had a face not hidden by an appliance but by natural every day shadows at night. I really wish they could've explained or slowly transition his red sleeves to it being striped in Freddy's Revenge, Dream Warriors, etc.
Interestingly in the opening of New Nightmare when we see the Freddy stand-in actor grabbing the robot Freddy arm, it had the stopped sleeves stop half way and had a deeper green color than the overall olive green look the movie gave it.
One interesting thing about the sweater you didn't mention was it was originally supposed to be red and yellow as a homage to DC comics' Plastic Man, a character who can shape shift and warp his appearance. And the Christmas sweater jokes would've probably been replaced with Ronald McDonald had Freddy worn a red and yellow one. Craven also wanted Freddy's face very gruesome. Not just a hole in his cheek, but he also wanted his skull and bone exposed through the skin with thick puss oozing out of his scars. (Basically a more burned Part 7 Jason if you think about it.) But it would've put too much work for the time and money they had. However, despite the idea of Freddy having a hole in his cheek to look silly and impractical at the time, we would actually see this done in Freddy vs. Jason when we see Demon Freddy and it looked amazing.
Brilliant summary, man! 🔥Regarding sweater sleeves: I always figured that it was simply easier to find striped sweaters with sleeves by the time Part 2 came around. You know how it is - no budget, no time, ect. (And hearing that audio again was a welcome blast from the past. Thanks for the resurrection! 👊)
It always surprised me that the fans haven't collectively turned up Wes' bully Fred Krueger from his childhood. If people simply found out where he went to school you'd think it'd be conceivable to find the identity (and maybe a picture) of the kid. Imagine being the kid who inspired Freddy. Crazy.
Now, when I came up with the idea for my reboot concept 'Nightmare: Return to Elm Street', I designed new Freddy like this: he still wears the same old sweater, except it's solid red on one sleeve, and solid green on the other. for his other clothes, he wears a pair of gray trousers and cleated boots. To top it off, he wears a green fedora with a red hat band to match his sweater. Now, when it comes to the glove, it mostly sticks to the original, except it has a thumb blade. As for his face, it's a mix of the Part 2 makeup and the new Nightmare makeup, and there are other burns on his body. His glove arm is also set lower on his body than the other, making it look like the glove is burdening him in some way. As the finishing touches, Freddy's teeth and nails are shown to be filed to points, and he has a pair of piercing icy blue yet bloodshot eyes, and catlike slits for pupils, and when we see him sticking out his tongue, we see it's long and thick, with a fork at the end like a snake.
I too love the overall design of Fred, especially from the first film - ( 1 & 3 are my favs.) but with that said, (knowing why Wes Craven chose that sweater design) I wish they went into more detail in the films narrative as to why a person, like Fred Krueger, a dirty old man from that era, would want to wear that type of sweater? I can understand that maybe that's what he was wearing when he was killed, and now he's stuck with for eternity - but why would he be wearing it in the first place . . . Did he find it in a dumpster? Did he take it from a victim? Was it the only thing he could find to cover up blood stains on what was underneath . . . I need to know lol. Also - I'm wondering why Nancy's house is so important (becoming iconic in it's own right) - that they use it as "Freddy's Lair" for the most part, often being confused as Freddy's House - It was Nancy's house, not Freddy's - so why was it a focal point in the series. Anyone have any suggestions? I thought (Maybe because Freddy's glove was still in the furnace? (though removed in part 2) Hmm.
Absolutely love these types of videos Chris! Always love the horror content. Especially when it comes to Freddy! And something I love about part one, is the way Robert leans to his right. Like the weight of the glove, is wearing him down. Love that bit!
Great video! About the glove = I saw an interview where Wes explains that he saw his cat scratching something and that's how he came up with the glove and knives ;)
I’m interested in why craven chose Krueger for Freddy’s surname, i know some sources cite that he was named after a childhood bully called Fred Krueger, but in interviews when Wes talks about it he just refers to his childhood bully as Fred, never mentions a surname.
In the idea I've concocted for a new film in the series, entitled NIGHTMARE: Return To Elm Street, I stick pretty close to this design, with the only diffferences being burned hands, sharp, dirty fingernails on the ungloved hand, Freddy's teeth being filed to points, a black trench coat with a red-and-green striped inside that he sometimes wears, and a blade in the thumb of the glove, with the blades now also being longer, sharper, and even retractable, (there's also a fun detail of the longest knife being on his middle finger, and the shortest one being on his pinkie finger) and, in case you're curious, he's played physically by Mads Mikkelsen, and Robert just dubs over his voice
Personally I prefer the striped sleeves. It’s weird though, because I could swear that they were striped in the first movie, during the “arms stretched out” scene. But it was dark, and I was a terrified little boy. So 🤷🏼♂️
I thought this in my earlier childhood years. Wasn't until my preteens I learned it was green, not black. I also learned that Freddy was saying welcome to primetime and not bumped to primetime around the same time. Watxh that bit with "bumped" in mind, and tell me if I was crazy to mishear it in that way.
I really like Freddy Krueger's design. That's why I always liked Spawn because he has a similar design like Freddy Krueger but I can't think of another character who did the burnt skin thing before Freddy.
Do you have a link to an interview/article about the homeless man looking through the peephole on Wes' apartment door? In all the interviews I've seen, he just mentions that he hears the front door of the apartment building creak as if being opened, but when his brother went out into the hall with a baseball bat, he couldn't find anyone. I also like the solid red sleeves better. When Wes asked for the sleeves to be put back on, apparently all they could find were solid red sleeves so that's what they went with. But I think it makes the sweater stand out more. I would have loved to have seen at least a screen test with a red and yellow version of the sweater, as that was what was originally in the script.
I loved the makeup from the first film. It felt like as the series went on they just put less and less effort into it to the point one of them (I think FvJ) his makeup looked straight up like a latex mask in certain scenes. (That’s why you avoid certain lighting when you have prosthetics).
I knitted a Freddy Kruger sweater with the red sleeves... people were telling me I had done it wrong. I told them you wanna be Freddy's don't know shit. Go look at the first movie.
Actually, David Warner was never approached, he's stated this in interviews, It's all in the Never Sleep Again: A Nightmare On Elm Street Again Legacy book. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zfCs7ioYDnQ.html
one of the most infamous horror movie characters ever. right up there with Dracula & Michael Meyers. it's such a shame the original movie became a "franchise" and ruined how Freddy started out. he was mysterious, creepy, deranged & truly terrifying. but as the sequels came out, he devolved into a silly joke, literally. sad.
I wonder if Hollywoood would consider Dave McRae for Freddy if the fan film kills it. Part 2 Freddy looked the Scariest. But the 1st film was and is the best.
Why did they cut the pure red sleeves and the whole tone of freddy in the first one was scary and creepy as fuck everyone watching that for the first time is the same fear they felt watching the exorcist from what I have read and my own experience
I'm sorry what's craven said multiple times in an interview he got the idea from watching his cat scratched the curtains in his house that's how you got the idea for the glove
Listening to the audio of Robert England trying different voices along with reverbs and delays. I honestly think it sounds way creepier and sinister. I think the deepened voice was cheesy and lazy. The first movie was done right, imo🙌🏼
Thnx for this Chris, I continue to love & watch all things Freddy. I AM glad that he got to wear sleeves though bc without, I think it would've been quite lame. And I hated the new one with James Earl Haley. It was all wrong. Makeup, sound, attitude, everything. I'm so mad I went to see it in the theater. Big disappointment 😞
I love the make up for part 2. with the contact lenses and more of a skeletal twitchy look with deep sunken in low brow eyes just was amazing. from there the sences was to make Freddy look more "like he was becoming human"..wrong aproch sorry not sorry lol.
He was made by Gary and Wyatt on the computer. They used the same doll that in 3 pulled Phillip out of his bed. Now he's a gym teacher and a coach of a lil girls hand ball team.🤧
Part 1+2 had the scariest freddy. 3 had the best balance of fun and scary. 4 was rockstar freddy which i still love. 5 was "i just farted" freddy witn weird mischievous old man look. 6 was cartoon freddy. 7.demon freddy with robotic glove. Freddy vs jason was mix of 3 and 4 with a early 2000's touch. Remake was the offputting cgi pedophile. Parts 1-3 had the best freddy design then 4 and then freddy vs jason. New nightmare would be higher if it weren't for leather paints but still cool. 6 is 3rd last in the worst of the og films. 5 is 2nd last and my 2nd least fav film in og series but unrated version elevates it a bit more. Still weak freddy design. Remake is the worst film and has by far worst design.
