In Aragon (Spain) there was a curious tradition: whenever a new king (or queen) was crowned, the nobles would give the crown after reciting this: “Nos, que somos y valemos tanto como vos, pero juntos más que vos, os hacemos Principal, Rey y Señor entre los iguales, con tal que guardéis nuestros fueros y libertades; y si no, no” "We, which are and worth as much as thee, but together more than thee, make thee our Leader, King and Sire amongst equals, as long as you guard our feudal laws and liberties; and otherwise not."

@CommonSwindler
@CommonSwindler 2 года назад
This is a unique video, however England is missing a crucially significant section: the revolutionary legal reforms of Henry II and the expansion on the royal power at the expense of the nobility, making England one of the most centralized kingdoms in Christendom. The rebellion of the barons against King John had much less to do with the efforts of William the Conqueror and almost everything to do with John’s unpopularity, failure abroad, and exponential expansion of the incredibly well-oiled administration forged by Henry II. “… the later resentment of the Angevin system implicit in Magna Carta might have been fostered by Henry II’s mastery of men and government. Certainly many of the barons at Runnymede in 1215 saw John’s excesses as expansions of those of his father.” Thomas K. Keefe, Henry II, Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, volume 26
@greatalexander3820
@greatalexander3820 2 года назад
Henry II is one of the most over-looked monarchs in Western European history, his usage of things such as Circuit Judges and the centralisation of English law is genuinely genius way of managing his vassals whom had basically become regional kings under the lax rule of King Stephen and the general chaos of the Anarchy. I'm glad to read a comment from someone who knows about the administrative genius of Henry II.
@CommonSwindler
@CommonSwindler 2 года назад
@@greatalexander3820 One of the greatest monarchs in history to be sure, and perhaps even the greatest “king” all things considered, I think. How many monarchs can claim, without hyperbole, to have founded a legal system which daily and directly affects 1/3 of the modern world? Add to that political and administrative genius, which is a rare coupling, and an alluring personality and you’ve got a truly great king, one who’s reforms certainly deserved a mention in this video.

China's conflicts with neighbors primarily stem from US influence, not because it is Communist (see Laos and Vietnam). China doesn't do preservation, that's really an obsession from Ming-era Han-centric conservatism as a response to foreigner rule. On the contrary, Chinese culture has always morphed and changed over the dynasties. Materials get better. They are very aware of what they are "entitled" to but less aware of what ruling actually is. Richard was more worthy of his father than his brothers, but all in all none of the Angevin brothers were anything like as remarkably able as Henry II. Also, to clarify... his "legitimate" sons rebelled at one time or another. That rather proves my point. His eldest child Geoffrey, who had no hope of inheriting anything other than his father's trust, was loyal to the end.

That Venice considered itself part of the Byzantine Empire into the 1100s and was Byzantium’s most loyal Vassal for hundreds of years is always ignored in every video mentioning Venice smh.

You said in the last video of the early Muslim expansion that more videos of the Muslim conquest would be released in late 2021, but it is 2022 and we haven't seen it yet...I have been waiting for it.

Did RU-vid, like, eat this video for breakfast? It claims it's only 41 seconds long and only plays that much. ._.

I hope on your next video you also talk about the Spanish Court or the Russian one around this time. Not just the non-Christian courts. This video was a good one. My compliments to all those who made this video a reality.

I hope all these complex court and governing system will be applied to the game as well. Making it very interesting to play various nations. I like being a figurehead and just watch my empire tear itself apart. lol
