Thanks for the video, it helped me a lot. I am just beginning with this kind of workflow. I had a very flat-looking image shot underwater in murky conditions. I found that the only way to get anywhere was to use dehaze in Lightroom. Being shot at 200 ISO the image wasn't noisy per se, however, dehaze appeared to add considerable noise. Using dehaze in the beginning and DeNoise after that seemed to solve the problem. The rest of the processing was done later and didn't add any extra noise.

Useful information about the Topaz trio. I'm running LR at version 13.1 with Edit>Preferences>Presets [tab]>Raw Defaults, Master set to "Camera Settings" and the Develop profile settings are gone. I can select "Color" or "Monochrome", or "Browse...".

Hi Anthony. Love the content you put up. Could you do a comparison of Topaz Gigapixel vs Topaz JpegtoRaw. They seem to be very similar if applied to a Jpeg image & I am wondering if it is worthwhile having both.

LOVE this video - super informative for a newbe. I bought the 3 Topaz package but only DeNoise (along with Photoshop) shows up in "edit in" when I right click on LR image. How do I add Sharpen and Gigapixel to the "edit in"? TIA

Very helpful Anthony. I've just about completed my matrix of when to use LR adjustments, bring in DeNoise, lob to PS for local adjustments that I can't do in LR. Why do you denoise before the crop?

Great up until the end and then nothing for Sharpen AI. While I agree that this image sharpened up just fine with the Lightroom tools, it would have been nice to see Anthony's Sharpen AI workflow. Perhaps there is another video, need to do some more searching.

Excellent video. One question that’s been bugging me: Do you keep all the intermediate TIFF files that get created at each stage? As cameras produce increasingly large original files, these get to be a drain on storage resources.

Useful information about the Topaz trio. Let's cut the chase. We pay the Mudbricks to innovate LR (=CR) and PS, and denoise, upscaling/upsampling as well as sharpening are all in these products. We accept it is not good enough and spend money elsewhere to get what we thought we already had bought? And the Mudbricks keep developing similar functions on different platforms with different programmers to different quality levels. The base raw processing engine in LR is now (10.1) the same as in Camera Raw (13.1), which proves they have already had one lightbulb moment. I think they can do better with our money. If they treat us subscribers more like shareholders, they will be able to satisfy the shareholders better. Also, I would have expected support for my new camera and its lenses more so than just being able to open a raw file. I have 5 prime lenses with that new camera that are of between 1 and 2 years old launch date. What The Fotography, Mudbricks!
@davidlasnick4512

Never heard the term “mudbrick” before so I looked it up. 😲 😆. The first 10 definitions said it was a brick made of mud. I finally found a definition in the urban dictionary and that was not appropriate to reprint here so I guess that’s where you’re going with it. Sort of like the original definition behind the band’s name Pearl Jam in a way.

Thanks for the great workflow with these plug ins. Question: I bought them as part of a package about 3 years ago. With these products are updates part of initial purchase or do I need to purchase latest version ? Thanks and Happy New Year!
@sounderdavis5446

Topaz used to upgrade users who bought licenses to their apps to new versions of its apps for free but no longer does, effective this past year. Upgraders now pay a reduced price which includes one additional year of free upgrades. However since you purchased three years ago when upgrades were free, you may--or may not--be entitled to one more major version upgrade for free. Try it and see. After three years, I think you would see improvements in performance and usability in the Topaz apps even if you have to pay. You may also qualify for a free trial to be sure their new versions work with your hardware.

Question: when you update a Topaz plug in in Lightroom the EDIT IN list now shows 2 listings, so which one is the most updated one? so that I can delete the duplicated older version. Thank You!
@notdisclosed9745
@notdisclosed9745 3 года назад
I use them in a different order. 1. Gigapixel, 2. Denoise, 3. Sharpen (rarely necessary). Denoise necessarily loses detail, so in my view better to enlarge with Gigapixel first, and keep sharpening and noise reduction to a minimum. Then Gigapixel is working with real pixels and needs to make less additions in enlarging. Gigapixel also tends to oversharpen, even with sharpening set to minimum. Then running Denoise afterwards helps to correct some of the artefacts introduced by Gigapixel. If I need Sharpen, perhaps to correct motion blur or camera shake, then it is often better to apply this first, before Gigapixel, so that Gigapixel is enlarging a better quality starting point image, rather than having to interpret how to enlarge out of focus or blurry parts of the image which need to be corrected. Just my view, everyone can experiment for themselves to find what suits them best.

Wouldn't it more useful to use giga + denoise or giga + sharpen? All three are overkill

Can you edit the file name automatically when sending it to a plug-in? Like buy the time it’s over a file would say image001.edit.edit.edit.tif. Would be great to say image.001.DN.JPEG. (DN Denoise) just to know what program you used.
@sounderdavis5446
@sounderdavis5446 3 года назад
There is no easy way to do what you want.* LR automatically creates a copy with the same name and "Edit.tif" appended to your original filename. Then when you Save Image or whatever in the app or whatever to export the app edit back to LR, at least Topaz DeNoise AI doesn't seem to give an opportunity to rename the file at that point either. Some non-Topaz apps do though. So what you can do instead as a workaround is, after the app-edited image has arrived back in LR, in Library mode, highlight the image you want to rename, in the Windows version at least, hit F2 and use LR to Rename the file. As you suggest I like to replace "Edit" with a two letter abbreviation of the app that edited the file, and then I often delete the intermediate TIFF saves, especially if more than one plug-in app edited the image (several extra TIFF files can chew up a lot of disk space and cause confusion as to which TIFF file was the final version of the edited image). So my image file might have a final name like this: 2020-12-26 Empire State Building final DN GP AI. ("final" means my last edited version and the date in my filename is my capture date, not the edit date, and I used DeNoise, Gigapixel, and Luminar AI as external apps). I always keep the original image file though in LR's catalog, so I can easily start over if needed later. I often do want to start over as I learn to better use plug-in apps or LR. *You can experiment with changing the filename when using "Edit In" if you go in Windows LR to Edit > Preferences > External Editing. The behavior I described above is the default behavior of LR. It looks there like you can set LR to append something different like DN for DeNoise instead of "Edit" (though I haven't tried this to verify), but if you set that different renaming scheme, it will apply until changed again even if you use more than one external editing app, so I don't know that this would help you. With multiple external editing apps, it's easier to just rename the file when it gets back to LR, I think.

I use these products all the time and find them very helpful. I am annoyed with them though as they have changed policies since I purchased the products and now require payment for upgrades. I have version 2.2.2 of the denoise and 2.1.8 of the sharpen program. Not sure if the newer versions will make a difference in my results other than having the extra panels. Any thoughts about the upgrades impacting my actual results?
@sounderdavis5446
@sounderdavis5446 3 года назад
You should be able to download and run a free trial, a. to be sure the new apps work with your hardware (they're pretty resource-intensive) and b. to see if you think the reduced upgrade fee is worth it. They have made steady improvements in usability and to some degree in output performance.

Why do you want to use Gigapixel AI first and then Sharpen AI? Why not the other way around? Both methods assume one uses DeNoise AI in the first step.
@davidlasnick4512
@davidlasnick4512 3 года назад
Once you have completed your scenario, in my experience, you should be left with 4 versions of the photo “unstacked” at the bottom of your screen. What do you do then? Collapse the stack? Just curious.
@sounderdavis5446
@sounderdavis5446 3 года назад
I stack them but keep only the original image file imported and the final version and Remove from the catalog and Delete from disk the intermediate files. If you convert to TIFF to pass a Raw image file to an external editing app, those TIFF files are big and use a lot of disk space, so I only keep the final one. It's not hard to start over if needed as long as you have the original image file still in LR.
