This video is about how and why I changed my habits and my lifestyle. Describing my journey from being overweight and miserable with multiple health issues to my current state of fit, happy and relatively healthy.
A smart man once said: "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step"
This is about my first, single step - and how I keep it going.
For me, mountain bike riding is a big part of my journey, but each person can find their own motivation and activities to help them along the way.
This video is a departure from my norm, and a bit longer than usual, but if me sharing my story can help even one person to feel like maybe they can do it to, then it is worth it. Thanks for watching!
P.S. spoiler alert - I get emotional about this one.

So inspiring! Great job sir! Been following your MTB series for a while now and the contents you’ve shared has been an eye opener for me. I agree, we all have different battles in life that I believe we don’t even need to instantly win but rather find “that switch” inorder for us to fight and be in tune and become a better version of ourselves each time.

Great job and a heartfelt story!. I found my mojo a few years ago and went from 245lb (112kg) to 190 after listening to a youtuber. Back into walking and riding (I don't like running) and next minute, I was looking for bigger hills to climb and there are a few around here! Now I ride to work when I can and also return shopping trolleys from around the town back to the supermarkets with my bike. It keeps the town nicer and I enjoy getting out...whatever it takes to go for a ride.

Hey Colin! Thank you and I'm so happy for you too as that a huge change and that's awesome what you do with the shopping carts! Did you have any single moment or experience that lead to your change, or was is something that just happened?

@@ThunderStruckMTB After listening to a mens channel, I decided enough was enough and I needed to do some things for me to combat work stress and be a good example for my boys. No health concerns luckily and I just wanted to do more once it got easier. So they are now used to seeing me go out walking/riding and I just went for a walk this morning with my youngest (15yo) son. Was a great chat and we both enjoyed it. They aren't keen on riding though.

Recently started biking to help get in better shape. Found your channel looking for a pedal review. So happy you shared this story. Really hits home when I’m 35, very over weight and have been feeling like I need to get in better shape to keep up with the kids. Thank you for the motivation.

Hi Jayson!! Sorry for the late reply as I was in Australia for the last month. Thank you so much for taking the time to tell me that as it has really made my day. All I want to say is that you can do it. It may be hard at times but the first time you realize that you are suddenly keeping up with your kids it will be the catalyst that keeps motivating you. Best of luck to you and I'm rooting for you. Don't be a stranger and if you want to come back and brag, I would love to hear it!!

Wow that's very wholesome story, new subscribers because of the Santa Cruz brake "saga". Glad I subscribed. I was touched by your story, thanks for telling what people need to hear. Move, eat less... Smoking is a bummer, if you can avoid 👍 I'm fighting it every day. I wasn't that overweight but very nastv life habits, had a stroke at 34, it makes you consider things in a different way. I've also had multiple sports bike and DH "incidents" 3 locking plates total in both arms (latest surgery left radius last july, still recovering) broken the same tibia twice, collarbone, pelvis in 1997, L1+L2 fused not that long ago... Recovering from life changing injuries is hard but keeping good life habit and moral day to day is way harder. I can't afford anything else, I need to be healthy lol 😉

Hi Laurentius! Thank you so much for the kind words. It sounds like you've been through it too but have not let that stop you. A stroke sounds terrifying and at 34 it's just unthinkable. L1/2 is awfully close to the thoracic level, how was the approach for your fusion? Posterior? Keep on trying to string as many good days together as you can and let the bad ones go and not dwell on them. Thank you so much for your comment and story!!
