You guys have asked.
Here's all the answers.
The WHOLE (easy!!) PROCESS of how we ferment our chicken feed.
AND...
The benefits we've seen and experienced from fermenting.

I discovered fermented foods for myself about 6 years ago and know the health benefits for myself so I'm definitely going to start fermenting my chicken's feed! I also saw something on making sprouts for them, so I'm going to start that, too! I'm still looking into perhaps fermenting foods for my dogs and cats.

Thanks, you cleared up my problem with fermenting the crumbles cuz I thought I had to drain it and that was nearly impossible! Now I saw how you handled it and I am so grateful! I've begun fermenting their grain feed with the addition of dried pinto beans and they are going CRAZY over it to the point that they rarely are touching their crumbles. I ferment the grain feed ( whole corn, whole oats, milo, and pintos) for 2 days and thats enough for the corn and beans to soften. Fermentation is not only super healthy❤ for my chickens but doubles my feed and saves money too!

I'm new to chickens this year. I have started out with 15 chicks that are 6 weeks old now. After watching several videos about this subject I am going to try it. Yours is the only video I have seen that mentioned the flavor changing as it ferments longer and the chickns not liking it. Thanks for your video

Enjoyed your video. Have been watching several fermentation videos as we are going to start fermenting next week - for chickens and pigs. Really appreciated the points you made about the different ‘days’/length of fermentation may affect the chickens liking it or not. Also liked seeing you ferment pelletized feeds - which is what we use right now.

I have a bucket with small holes on the bottom. I put that into a second bucket of water. Then I put scratch into the top bucket and I make sure that there is added water to cover. When I'm ready to use, I pull the top bucket out and drain some water, but then move it open to another bucket. When drained, I add the drained water back to the original double buckets. My soaked feed is now drained and I have been reusing the fermented liquid for years. Each time I have to add more water of course. Easy system for me and I always have ready liquid. I use straight city water and the chlorine has never interfered with fermentation.

We just started doing this with our chicks. They have just about all their feathers so I wanted to get them into eating fermented feed now while they are young. This is my first week and they are GOBBLING it up. Originally my plan was to feed it to them in the morning, then their afternoon "snack" would be some sprouted grains and the evening would be dry feed. They like it so much that my husband wants me to feed it to them all the time when giving them their feed. Also noticed alot less waste in the feed

Could you tell me how many days to take a broiler chicken to prepare for full size with farmented feed and what is the final body weight?can we provide farmented feed to broiler chicken at night?
@noahriding5780
@noahriding5780 3 года назад
How do you convert the weights right of wet fermented soupy feed compared to the normal dry measurements? If it expands then does that mean you are only doing like 80% of a total day's actual feed, banking on it expanding to ~100%?
@Jess_Connell
@Jess_Connell 3 года назад
Honestly I am not that scientific about it. I know people who are... especially people with much bigger chicken feeding situations, who have to be very careful about how much they're putting out in order to make a farm budget work or whatever. We don't do that. For us, I just do a little bit less than I would normally do for a day's feed and let it ferment, and feed it to them, and then repeat.

Do you have well water? I’ve been fermenting food for my family for some time and our chlorinated water will kill the fermenting bacteria 😖. So I will either have to haul out some filtered water or let some water sit in a a bucket for 24 hrs before using. Either way it’s gonna be a pain. 😖
@kardicat9055
@kardicat9055 3 года назад
Huh, so just to be clear you are fermenting the pellets. My chickens always leave the dry pellets in their feed so I try not to buy it. But this looks like a great idea. I did recently buy a bag of wheat to ferment which they love. But if the pellets are cheaper I might give it a go. Thanks.
@Jess_Connell

Yup! That is correct-- we ferment the pellets because they do have the ground up grain in them. They ferment well & the animals love it.

Can I ferment laying mash that isn’t pellets?? And how does scratch feed work in this process? Thanks for sharing.
@Jess_Connell
@Jess_Connell 2 года назад
Laying mash works the same way as pellets. I believe you can add in Scratch with it if you want, or add it separate as a supplement. I haven't added it to mine, so I can't speak about if it ferments at the same rate or not.

You can totally do that. A lot of people in colder climates do that as a way of activating new fermentation more quickly. For us, this was filmed during summer in Texas, so it didn't need the help for our fermentation process! 🤣

People do it with a variety of grains. But I haven't done it with those and can't weigh in. There are other RU-vidrs who ferment various grains for their animals, so you could look for that. This is the process with chicken feed.

Hi Jess, when you started your chicken coop in the suburbs a while. Ago.... how was you experience? We have cats around and our own ;) and was wondering, is it worth it? X
@Jess_Connell
@Jess_Connell 4 года назад
Here's what I learned about that: (1) I only like chickens that I have raised from chicks. Chickens raised by other people run the real risk of being skittish/running away from you, and that makes (for us at least) a miserable experience. (2) If you live in a rainy climate, I would be cautious. For me, one of the things I like about chickens is having enough space for them to where (a) they can graze/free range, often, and (b) where their yard does not get to where it just smells like mucky, muddy poop all the time. So, with a small yard in Texas, we could do it I think, but a small yard in Washington state, with tons of rain, made it a physically unpleasant & smelly situation. (3) RE: cats-- we had a barn cat recently, and it would run through the chickens and it never went FOR a chicken. I don't know that I would trust it around younger chicks, and I didn't even really trust it around our chickens, but it worked out ok. Probably depends on the chickens and the cat in question.

We tried this and it got moldy after a couple of days.. Covered bucket. Inside. What is wrong?
@Jess_Connell
@Jess_Connell 2 года назад
The feed has to remain covered by water. If it's exposed to air it will start to mold. So if it soaks up all the water in the bucket overnight, you either have to feed it to the chicken right then, or add more water and keep it covered completely until you plan to feed it to them. The feed must be below the surface of the water.

If you accidentally feed the chickens more fermented feed than they can consume in one setting. Is the fermented feed in the feeding trays still good the next day?!!
@Jess_Connell
@Jess_Connell 3 года назад
Yes it is still good! They'll keep going until they use it up. One of the great things about chickens is that they are omnivores that are capable of eating carrions (dead/decaying flesh) and so their guts can handle just about anything. Pretty much if they DO eat it, they CAN eat it.

One thing I have noticed is that if it's fermented for 3 days the chickens eat less because apparently they are fuller..., hence the reason yours ate less I think. The only true way to test this would be to weight your dry feed each day for a week and see if they eat more dry feed or less..., but then if the chickens are happy and producing, nothing else matters.

I don't really think the feed can ferment in 1 day. If it is not bubbling when you open it, it's just soaking, not fermenting. If that is what you are going for that's fine, but can't really call it fermentation.
@Jess_Connell
@Jess_Connell 3 года назад
Maybe you're from somewhere cold, but in the summer heat of Texas, especially with the "old" fermented liquid that we add the feed to for the next day, I think it's perfectly fair to call it a ferment. It thickens up and bubbles -- easily-- within 24-36 hours.
