How wildlife crossings protect both animals and people

To protect the movement of wildlife impeded by busy roadways, a series of manmade overpasses and underpasses throughout the United States helps animals big and small safely get across the street, preventing collisions and saving lives. About 1,500 of these structures already have been built. Correspondent Conor Knighton looks at how they have protected genetic diversity in animal populations while also greatly reducing roadkill. He also visits the site of the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing near Los Angeles, which when complete will help cougars cross one of the busiest highways in the country.

I appreciate the idea and maybe implementation in extreme cases if warranted, but the economics of building something like this just doesn’t make sense. There are a lot more people that need help. May sound like “whataboutism” but I can name a million things that should get funding first. This is a money pit from start to finish and her justification regarding genetic variance has a sprinkle of truth but she blows it way out of proportion. Makes it sound like they will go extinct tomorrow if they have to cross the road to mate. It’s also probably the biggest project of this lady’s career, so I’m assuming some bias is present. Animals cross at night, when other predators can’t see them. Also when there’s only a car per mile on the roadway. I just don’t see widespread economic or ecological benefit from this other than making policy makers look good, and paranoid naturists sleep better at night.

@@seanpetaiaWe can find ways to build these more cost-effectively, over time. We can do practically anything we put the proper time and choicest minds working on. If we can send probes flying past Pluto, we can improve things here on Earth, without breaking the bank. Besides, we waste _billions_ of tax dollars a year in the U.S. on miscellaneous and extraneous efforts. I once read that there was something like $30 million spent by the U.S. goverment studying "UFOs." Cutting costs is a matter of want-to and prioritization. This kind of effort matters more than finding "aliens" visiting Earth for vague photo-bombing.

It has been decades since the US didn't have a year that "broke the bank". US spending isn't sustainable, and if we don't get it under control soon, we won't be able to provide food for our military, let alone fancy ships, a space program, or pretty skywalks for animals. Exactly. If there are Federal or State dollars involved in a highway design, your suggestion SHOULD be inserted into the Standard Specification. Once the builders, estimators and civil engineers get used to this necessary stipulation being integrated into the project, they will get used to it, and start figuring it into the cost and schedule. Great suggestion.

When the Alligator Alley road was built across the everglades in the 1960's Willard Watters, Bonita Springs, Florida (Who I believe had an affiliation with the Audubon Society) demanded/encouraged the wildlife crossings be installed in the initial construction. Held it up for years. I don't know of any done before this.

Wonderful! The wildlife were here much earlier than concrete, asphalt, and fast cars! Covered wagon trains probably didn’t interfere, except for hunting.

This was / is a wonderful project! I wish we had more of these even down here in West, Texas where I-10 is splatterfest when the ruts take place.. That is a really LONG stretch of highway (I-10 from El Paso to San Antonio) but I think there are some high movement areas that could definitely benefit.. Both animals and humans!

There are 3 overhead crossings on US 93 right by the Hoover Dam on the Nevada and Arizona state line and while driving to Vegas a few times I have personally seen Bighorn Sheep using these bridges!

I was wondering if this idea was similar to what Canada did for the Trasn Canada highway and @ 2:35 just answered that which is awesome for these animals!
