After years of ill health, capitalism is now in a critical condition. Growth has given way to stagnation; inequality is leading to instability; and confidence in the money economy has all but evaporated. In How Will Capitalism End?, Wolfgang Streeck argues that the world is about to change. The marriage between democracy and capitalism, ill-suited partners brought together in the shadow of World War Two, is coming to an end. The regulatory institutions that once restrained the financial sector’s excesses have collapsed and, after the final victory of capitalism at the end of the Cold War, there is no political agency capable of rolling back the liberalization of the markets. Ours has become a world defined by declining growth, oligarchic rule, a shrinking public sphere, institutional corruption and international anarchy, and no cure to these ills is at hand.
Wolfgang Streeck is Director Emeritus at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne. He is a member of the Berlin Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and a Corresponding Fellow of the British Academy. His books include Buying Time and How Will Capitalism End?
Moderated by Cornel Ban, Assistant Professor of International Relations and Co-Director of the Global Economic Governance Initiative at Boston University and author of Ruling Ideas: How Global Neoliberalism Goes Local.
This event takes place as part of a new initiative entitled "Interferences," a series of events on issues pertinent to democratic politics in the US and Europe. Organized as part of EU Futures, a series of conversations exploring the emerging future in Europe. The EU Futures project is supported by a Getting to Know Europe Grant from the European Commission Delegation in Washington, DC.

"The emancipation of the working classes must be conquered by the working classes themselves. We cannot, therefore, co-operate with people who openly state that the workers are too uneducated to emancipate themselves and must be freed from above by philanthropic big bourgeois and petty bourgeois." - Marx and Engels 1879

The way things are shaping up it's Democracy that will end.

This is the concern. A systemic change seems increasingly likely, but which way it breaks is hard to predict. Capitalism and Democracy are fundamentally at odds.

Show me where there’s been a Democracy, really. What “Democratic” society didn’t rely on some type of slave labor or stolen land or some other such form of exploitation. Doesn’t really matter anyways. We’re finished. Most just haven’t realized it yet.

@RED PILL PORTAL I am left wing and I pretty much agree with what you just said, labels aren't useful anymore they are just there to create divisions.

Germany paid for Greece once, it won't do it a second time, in the next financial crisis the EU will cease to exist, capitalism however will live on.

The solution to capitalism is left-Anarchism set in a resource based economy.
