The contextual view that really makes good sense of all this for me is that of the coming AD 70 judgment, whereby Jerusalem, the temple, and the Mosaic Covenant cultus are totally destroyed, i.e., judged. For one thing, that easily explains how the faithful are 'scarcely' saved'; having been prophetically warned by Jesus, they are able to just escape the impending destruction and desolation by the Romans. The "For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us" can be a misleading translation. For just one thing, the 'at' is Gk apo, which carries a sense of separation of one thing from another by which the union or fellowship of the two is destroyed. It is very rarely translated 'at.' However you translate the word, the connotation of 'separation' makes a lot of sense in an AD 70 context. There's more. Maybe I'll get back to it sometime, but you can check it out for yourself. Read the entire book of 1 Peter with this context in mind and see if it doesn't make a lot of sense to you.
