If you didn't know, Dollywood recently announced earlier today that Lightning Rod at Dollywood will be getting a new high-speed lift hill for the 2023 season. The last day to ride will be October 30th, so make sure you get to Dollywood to ride it with the launch before it closes!

I love how they’re calling it a “sped up chain lift” when it’s almost slower than a cable lift

Idk Millennium Force’s cable lift currently operates at 9mph and opened at 13.4mph so it’s pretty comparable.

I feel like a simple fix to reliability issues, would easily have to be a tire drive launch, sort of like the one on The Incredible Hulk at Universal Orlando.

The issue with this would be rain. Tire drives cannot function reliably in the rain, so you would need an and enclosed lift. They could just add an anti rollback device and not run it in the rain (with a tire drive lift/launch).

I’m still a little disappointed that they’re removing the launch. Pretty sure changing the wood support structure under the launch to steel would’ve been the ticket to keeping the LSM launch reliable….

honestly the reliability may have been better if they just outsourced to a more renowned company to make the launch. b&m, premier, vekoma, mack, even intamin nowadays make reliable lsm launches. idk how true this is but i heard the launch was designed and manufactured by a company thats primarily known for making brakes which just seems like an odd move. as long as the lift does go as fast as they say it's honestly probably going to be a good move though. they have big bear to have a large scale launch coaster in their lineup, everything after the drop will be more or less the same, and reliability will hopefully be notably improved.

With the current launch, the train slows down a fair bit once it gets near the top.
@CarolinaCycloneJames
@CarolinaCycloneJames 5 месяцев назад
Well they are using current launch speeds. It used to fly over the hill during its first and 2nd year of operation. I'm pretty sure it was around 35ish or faster cresting the hill in the first year. And now it kinda crawls over it.
@CarolinaCycloneJames
@CarolinaCycloneJames 5 месяцев назад
@@stevek1672yes. The launch used to cover almost the entire hill. I knew it hit 45mph. But I think during its 1st and 2nd year it was around 35mph going over the crest. I think it now hits around 20mph or so going over the crest with the current launch (well I mean 2023)

I say use a cable. There is no such thing as a high speed chain. Yes 13mph is fast. But not fast enough to get the train at the speed it was when new or even after several changes to it. Use a cable launch. Thatll at least bring it up to 15-17 maybe even 20mph. Which is more inline to its current pace.

I still do not understand why they chose not to reinforce the supports at the bottom of the launch with steel to make the lsm's more reliable. Or they could have switched it over to a drive tyre launch

@@SeaWorldOrlandoandmoreit depends on the cycle, I’m pretty sure that the launch has a “fast” setting that clears the top at 13 mph and a slower setting that just barely makes it over the top. The difference between those two is the quad down pulls -1g on the slow setting and -1.3g on the fast one
@wildcatenthusiast8888

No. The announcement just says that it is going to CREST the lift at 13 MPH. It may simulate the launch and go fast upward then go a lot slower at the top.
@NY.Coasters
@NY.Coasters 9 месяцев назад
Unless its a catch car, it would be impossible to simulate a launch, the fastest I see it going is like skyrush speed, but that will still be very hard because they're using a "chain lift" not a catch car.

Why? Dollywood said "high speed chain lift". To me that means the speed of the lift hill will be the same speed as the current Lightning Rod when it crests the lift hill. So it will be the same speed it is now, when it crests the second hill into the main drop.
