How will we lay this deck with no fastenings? Choosing plank and seam width on our wooden deck(Ep45)

Hi everyone, thanks for tuning in! In this episode we are working on the cabin top decking stock. The timber is Tasmanian Celery Top Pine. We have made a few test pieces to work out the width of the planks and the width of the seams. We oil the winning test piece so we can see how it will handle being exposed to the elements.
Iefke's parents are still visiting Tasmania and help us out in the shed with different jobs.
Now that we have prepared the stock for the cabin top decking Matt starts the preparation of the deck laying system. Because we do not want to use mechanical fastenings in the decking we are in need of a different way to hold the planks in place while the bedding glue cures. Matt builds a strong-back over the cabin so we can use wedges to press the decking down onto the glue. A strong system that involves a fair bit of construction.
Let us know your thought and thanks again for following along!
Cheers Matt, Iefke and Obie

I don't know what it is about your channel but I always save it for the end of my day. It is just so relaxing to watch you two work on this boat project. Calming personalities..... maybe that's it. A "super thanks" button would be used, I think. Any way Thank You so much for taking us along on your build.

It is cool to read all the reactions. As I watched the video it occurred to me how great it must feel to have your parents (in-laws) so enthusiastic and involved. And then I read the comments and saw that are am far from alone in this. I think it was the laundry box top, but man, it is by far the most laundry box I have ever seen. And that goes for a lot of things on Tarkine. Heading over to patreon now to check this weekends update. Thank you

I really enjoyed seeing the bench top over the ‘laundry box’. My Dad used myrtle for most of the furniture that he made for our home. He would’ve loved the grain in that bench timber. I could never plane ‘cranky’ grain like that. I think he taught himself how to make and sharpen cabinet scrapers for that wood.

You could use ‘secret nails’, which are small nails driven through the part of the deck plank which will be covered with filler. It is usual to drive the nails into the corner where the full-thickness plank meets the rebate.

Re deck planks: It maybe too late , but the Tally Ho people modified the base of a trim router to cut a bevel angle ( like 7º) on only one edge of their deck planks . It saved them from working both edges. Hope this helps.

Love what you do - the workmanship, care, consideration and design. Teak decks installed without fasteners leave a complete gap between the boards and the recommended method for the sealer is to lay fine line tape on the substrate between the boards so that the sealer is actually only contacting the sides of the boards. Apparently this allows everything to flex without tearing the sealer. It also makes it a lot easier to remove the sealer in the event it needs to be redone. It will also allow you to sand the decks down to nothing without exposing the rabbet / rebate. Believe it or not I had a boat with decks installed as you've done on the sample and it was getting very close to exposing the rabbet and the sealer was paper thin.

When filling a caulking seam it is better to push the glue dispenser rather than draw it to you. This eliminates the formation of bubbles and gaps in the seam filler.

Quite some years ago (between 1980 and 1990) my father refurbished an old rescue vessel designed by Cilin Archer. He used sikaflex deck-caulking and got a beatiful deck. However, he also treated the deck with Owatrol dekksolje (deck oil) and it was a disaster: We got black smears on our cloths for several years whenever we sat on the deck. After two years he gave up and rechalked the deck. It was quite a lot of work to remove the old and defect chaulking... Maybe todays sixaflex is compatible with Owatrol oil, but please do some thorough testing before using dekksolje on top of sikaflex!

So, you're going to rely on adhesives and clearcoat to hold down your decking...really?! Cup and curl, sun and cold, wet and dry, expansion and contraction...what adhesive can keep up with that? (shallow kerfs - many and close together in the stock to reduce curl, help the waterproof adhesive to penetrate and to help anchor the decking stock)
@Building_a_Boat_by_the_River

If we were laying a deck as thick as Tally ho or A2A then yes you need fastenings but this is an overlay. The planks are only 15mm thick, quarter sawn clean grained and straight lay. It’s actually quite common and has been done on a lot of other boats, and the glue is flexible and strong enough to take the movement
