How Women Fight Against Chinese Family Planning Policies | China | ENDEVR Documentary from 2016
The documentary "China: In the mood for life" talks about how China’s controversial one-child policy may have been abandoned but forced abortions and sterilizations and harsh punishments for unauthorized pregnancies continued after the law was lifted. It remained illegal to have a child outside wedlock, become pregnant under the age of 20 or have more than two children. China holds the world record in abortions with more than 30,000 carried out every day.
This unique investigation, filmed over two years, reveals the human cost of China’s strict family planning policies. We follow three women who try and resist and witness on camera the brutality of the system.
Meili decides to go into hiding, leaving her village and family, to carry her ‘illegal’ pregnancy to term. Xia, abducted from her home at 6 am and forcibly sterilized, is bringing a historic legal case to hold the state accountable while lawyer Lu Miaoqing is prepared to risk prison to defend the victims of state-enforced birth control.
UPDATE: In 2021, China announced that it would allow couples to have up to three children. The documentary was filmed in 2016.

It seems that the 1 child policy has become a mere money-making racket, as there is no longer any need for severe family planning in China. But the policy is continued because women have to pay high fines for more pregnancies. In other words, it's allowed to have more children, as long as you can pay the tens of thousands of euros "fines" for it

My parents paid a large fine retroactively, after I was born in late 70s, because I was the 2nd child. The 3rd child didn’t have my luck, so I never got the chance to meet my little sister or brother.

A government should never be against their majority people. A government should never rule over human rights. Russia China North Korea and Cuba are wrong in trying to take over people’s fundamental right of happiness and dignity of freedom. People in different countries should have the right to learn how to be free and equal to others and not be punished for their rights to choose what they want in their lives.

Believe or not, the Russian government is trying to discourage women from getting higher education and having carriers, but rather encourage (force) women to have kids. One politician even said, 'First the baby, then the University'.

Thanks for this documentary and thanks to all participants for their bravery to speak their truth. Truth, trust and morality are human gems, sometimes they have to be hidden for reasons that make no sense. Systems that take human rights and are inflexible in responding to crimes hurt the very people they pretend to protect. The mental health toll on the women, the families, doctors and staff that abort and people that round up women would be enormous. I hope the future will look different. Control is not breeding morality.

This issue is so difficult. If a large number of families opt for having like four, five or more children, this would cause problems. On the other hand, this is very unlikely. Writing in 2024, families are now entitled to have three children, but most families now choose to have only one due to economic pressure. The problem of an aging population remains

Its crazy that you used yo be called tp do a pregnancy test and ultrasound and are MADE to abort if pregnant . The mental and physical damage of these women must have been huge .thank goodness they stopped it in 2016. But it doesnt help these women that it happened to .

So sad and scary ordeal for pregnant mothers. Come stay in Malaysia to give birth and return back to China. I always think that the government should have a general country quota for household who wants extra babies can apply. Aiyah! Malaysia need more chinese population. Our Chinese Population is not enough.

They do treat their people differently but they force them into place and expectations of what everyone needs to do. They were mention that a lot of people are unsatisfied with their closed system and want it to be open. It was told to me that they usually frown on the people asking for it to be open. They have a decent amounts of suicide and attacks within their own people because they don't like what their culture is doing within there. "They are offended to be me." When I was in there, there had recently been one family member going homicidal on another member of the government and the suiciding. They were torturing the family to find information to see if the others were like it.

Between 200million and 400million births prevented by one child policy. Forcing family planning such as this is absolutely disturbing and China is now suffering the consequences with a rapidly declining population growth. The great leap forward was bad but then unfortunately things go worse, especially for women.

Exactly, different country, different social economic background, DIFFERENT LAW!! Unfortunately, she knowingly broke the law so she must face the consequence. Harsh as it may appear to those 'Well Fed' people of the FREE WEST, but given China's dire social economic background, this 'one child' policy was a necessary move in reducing abject poverty and propelling rapid development, it is another 'SACRIFICE' made by the people. Obviously there are some blowback including a huge ageing population and an imbalanced boy/girl ratio, but every action has a consequence.

One child policy is harsh and against human rights however, if China do not have this policy, then they will face problems from over population. Damn either way. Watched a few documentary about poverty and the main cause is mainly over population. Like in the Philippines, every family has so many children.
