This is my second video in a series on the director Wong Kar-wai. In this video I outline how we can read his work as a social and political document that comments on the culture of Hong Kong.
Like with the first video, I’ve designed this video to be as accessible as possible, so whether you’re already familiar with his work, or had never even heard of his name until now, why not watch and learn a thing or two about one of Asia’s most distinctive directors.
Thank you for watching this video, I hope you enjoyed it. I’m still new to making videos so I appreciate any feedback. Please subscribe to Archer Green if you enjoy this video, as he has kindly let me use his channel as an outlet once again.

there aren't many analyses here that explore the history / context of WKW's films although they're SO present (to me at least, as a HKer). Loved the analysis especially on Happy Together, my personal fav from him - I had considered making a video on it but didn't for safety reasons. Thank you for this video essay!!! (also, In the Mood for Love besides reflecting the 60s HK upbringing, spans before & after the late-60s riots in the city. It's never mentioned explicitly but the absence makes it all the more present - like how HT is set in Argentina and Taiwan. I think the chronology parallels how the relationship of the leads panned out as things became more and more tumultuous. Obv the newsreels and footage in Cambodia at the end too!)

I really like his style, it is unique. Knowing the historical and political context makes you appreciate his films more, many things I missed the first time I saw In the Mood of love not knowing Hong Kong history well.

I appreciate this so much, it's so important to have this kind of representation and I tried to do justice in the video to how important Happy Together was in this respect. I'm glad that it resonated with you, it just goes to show how great of a film it is.
