@@macroma Me too, but even more her nice, funny personality than her chess. I was cheering for her in the Last Candidates Tournament. The key moment, which imo decided the tournament, was in the 12th round when she missed 26...Qb6!! against Lagno. The game would have finished in the next 5-6 moves if she had played that very difficult move to find. What surprised me was that it was the only winning move in that very promising position.

Hardly, unless your definition of "genius" is so broad that it doesn't mean much anymore. For example Abasov - a formidable grandmaster for sure - isn't even in the world's top 100.

​@@vibovitold Abasov was close to top 50 last year. He is currently in the top 0.1% of FIDE rated chess players (and everyone with a FIDE rating is already strong compared to the average person). I would argue calling him a genius is fair. Not a genius compared to the very best, but a genius nonetheless.

@@meron7700 0.1% is one in a thousand. so if the best one in a thousand means a genius to you, then you're correct of course. like i said, it's a matter of definition. there isn't one officially correct definition of what genius means. as far as chess goes, if what the greatest players themselves think is anything to go by, they're a bit more rare than 0.1%. for example Judit Polgar only mentioned Anand, Ivanchuk and Carlsen when asked whom she regarded as geniuses. Ivanchuk, faced with a similar question, mentioned eg. Fischer or Kasparov, but explicitly stated he wouldn't put Karpov in that category; go figure.

And regarding what the greatest players think: of course they wouldn't say top 0.1% since they themselves are or were better than that. But yes, it is all up to your own interpretation. For some "genius" would not be a question of playing strength but rather playing style (probably what Ivanchuk was referring to idk) or how they think about the game.
