I loved my 2001 750 nighthawk. Had 4 carbs and would scream. Not only fast... but it was comfortable for me and the wife. It was affordable. Now I have a bike that cost $500 for a 3 hole oil change. 250 if I do it myself.
I think what you are doing is awesome. I was a mechanic at a Yamaha dealership in 1985 when Yamaha produced several great new bikes. The vmax was the flagship of the bunch but the FZ750,Maxim 700X,and the FJ600 were great new additions to the motorcycling world. When I PDI'd the first vmax and did the obligatory test ride I was forever changed. I've since owned a Maxim 700X and two gen 1 vmaxes. I've slowed down some since and I currently own a 2019 ultra limited that will be getting the 131 crate motor this coming February. Keep up the good work.
Great cause. The last time I rode a V-Max was back when they were new after making a few passes down a long city block I gave it back to my friend and said this is to much fun, fun that’s going to get me in trouble or hurt, what a fantastic machine.
1993 Vmax was my first motorcycle, I bought it in Florida and rode it from Ft Lauderdale to Ft Myers, all of alligator alley I had the permagrin smile like I was on acid all the way back home, truth is I pined for it since I graduated HS in 1985, I swore I’d have one some day, at 42 yrs old I knew I was mature enough to not kill myself on it, my road shredding days are over now at 56 and now I rock a mint condition 1989 Honda Pacific Coast like Chey’s first bike, I loved getting the 👍🏽from every type of rider even the baddest Harley tough guys riding the Vmax but I’ve found I get more tilted head looks and gobs of questions at gas stations with my PC800, I love both bikes, and have done a group ride with Shadetree in Tampa, I only wish I lived closer to this group of awesome people so we could ride together more,,,,
Great video Josh, awesome story (telling)… In 1986 I bought one new and it was just an insane bike for that time period. Can still remember the feeling that bike had on full acceleration. Good stuff buddy! 😎👍🏼👍🏼
Lol picked up on your Hunter S Thompson bit in this video. Your commentary has been well thought out and well written lately Josh. Oddly enough, I e been listening to HST audiobooks for the last month at work. Keep it up man, this is some of your best stuff. Can't make every video about riding round looking at girls and drinking beer (although that's fun and pretty cool). But I dig where you going with this. Possibly a few pieces on some other "legend status" bikes? Cb750 social series? Maybe the beloved goldwing ? Hell you've got footage of your 1100,1200 and now Cheys F6B already Just a thought. Keep up the good work my man. Hopefully in 2024 I'll have a 2 wheeled machine in good enough shape to make it down to the wang of the USA and say hi and go for a rip through cockroach bay with ya!
Yamaha should hire you to write ad copy. Great vid and V-Max narrative. Also really appreciated the Lord of the Rings V-Max . Seems like you are really putting your heart and soul into the cause, keep up the good work.
Entertaining and educational! Thank you, Professor Shadetree, for the captivating Yamaha Vmax history lesson. What an amazing job you do, my friend. Please keep making awesome videos!
Just a quick update on the facts. All four carbs are feeding each allocated cylinder of the engine as a normal V4 with four carbs do, not two. Vboost comes in at 6000 not 4000 when the valve opens so each cylinder now has two carbs feeding it. Great vid as always.
Wanted to clear this up also but you've been faster 👍. I'm a Vmax rider since 1989 and even after all these years this is still the one and only bike for me.
Born in the 70’s and a teen when the vmax came out. Fast forward to 2016 divorce came knocking and I bought my dream bike the vmax finally. Freaking awesome
I own an 89 model. Got lucky with a low price and low mileage(5700 miles) no airbox and has a vintage kerker pipe. Been on my bucket list since 5th grade. When they came out.
Didn't realize that I wasn't subscribed. Sorry Bro. Subscribed. The algorithm has generally kept me up to date. I want to comment on your video production. I like this one a lot. It has great historical perspective, creative use of cult/historic viral clips/"memes", background music, and narration. The length is ADHD friendly. You stayed on topic and concise. I dig your theme music and that you use an outro. It doesn't get old and we can choose to go ahead find something else if we want to skip. I've been meaning to buy some raffle tickets and support the Forgotten Angels. It's great that you promote such a meaningful benefit. I missed on a local V-Max project bike awhile back. There is another one that "Runs, needs work" relatively close to me. It checks a lot of the boxes for a new project bike. Like I need a new project!! I like Big OS Suzuki 4s a lot. My project bikes: '00 GSF1200N Bandit, '97 RF900RV, '92 DR250S -> Showa DR350SE + KS & Dirt mod/conversion, and I have to finish the ZR-7 that I bought to repair for a new rider/friend. I bought a "new to me" lift table yesterday. I'm pretty stoked about not having to bend over so much. 🤣😂 I've been on the verge of preparing myself to buy a HD. I'm thinking maybe a Heritage Classic. I think I could go with any glide/touring model though. That black thing you ride is sick Shadetree. I threw my leg over a Breakout the other day. I love the styling but it seems too pigeon-holed. Why have all of that performance if you can't lean the bike over? I kind of think I'd like to take on a HD project bike.
Bought a new one in 96 loved that bike. You can trick the vboost so its on at all rpms hoot to ride but horrible fuel range not that it was good to begin with!
Fyi. Yamaha did claim 145hp at the crank.... however due to the shaft drive, transmission etc it put out barely 90 (give or take a few) to make it to the rear wheel. So I would say 145 is a guess at best or perhaps a marketing gimmick? The drag racer in the video is Pee Wee Gleason, hired by Yamaha to produce the 1/4 mile time, he weighed about 120lbs WITH his leathers on lol. He was a pro drag racer to begin with, so power to weight produced some "fantastic" times. The engine came from the Venture Royal (without cheese) and on occasion the heavy wristed riders broke the shaft drive collar and a few dropped valves. The extra jam compared to the Venture was a little hard on the engine. Oddly, the venture is 1300cc and the max is 1200. The fun comes from the torque and its addicting for sure!. Still a classic ride no matter what and of course its going to a good cause! Cheers Shade!
I ordered one at the 1984 Long Beach Motorcycle Show. Drag racing star Pee Wee Gleason came out on stage and did a burnout and vaporized a rear tire and I had to have it. I was still hating Harley from having paid the tarrif tax and didn't look at the Harleys. A few years later, I made it to Boston and up to New Hampshire on it carrying extra gas.
@@pacobanshee5265 I can't imagine Josh ever saying "This bike is a POS, don't ever buy one of these." He's great at sales and is always a "glass half full" kind of guy. Maybe he really likes it, IDK. The thing looked a little bouncy on the on-ramp. I'm sure that the suspension could use an update/fresh fluid.
The thing about movements is you have to accept everybody. So even the group of people who really dislike you, you still have to accept them or you don't like them... Everyone deserves to be accepted
Properly modded the Vmax has one of the sickest sounds i ever heard.... theres a motovloger whos not active anymore called RAGB VMAX.. you can hear it there
And something about that little pocket between acceleration and deceleration that just makes turns feel kinda spooky not really sure how else to say it. But yeah for as fast as it is it's remarkably comfortable on the highway
Is it weird that i actually love the style of the first gen VMax? I just think they look like something I would have drawn in my notebook from an anime cartoon in the '90s.
If I recall correctly, The 85/86 V-MAX was the fastest Production bike Produced Since the Kawasaki 750 triple two stroke. Only that bike was pulling 10 second Quarter mile with a pro rider, on a tire about the size of the one they used on O.C.C chopper bicycle. 🫨💩🫣
So, your carb summary isn't entirely correct. Under 4k it operates as most 4 cylinder bikes do, one carb per cylinder. Once the butterfly valve opens, then it uses 2 carbs per cylinder. Other than that, a spot on summary of the beast that is the VMax. Love that this bike is being raffled, love the work you do with Forgotten Angels, and the information you give us out here in the world.
Hey shadetree, I'm moving to tampa to work at a place near oldsmar. Any suggestions on a best place in that area for a filthy biker who likes to keep to his own? A cut back but no to far from the industrial park? Off topic.
I am in again man, no ones really helped my with my questions about my round up yet, i am not sure how that's working out thinking i am in all of these without knowing is kind of a bummer but i for sure wanted to be counted. I mean, I wanted to be counted in all of them but it;s getting late in the year now so just to be sure - went a head and did it the old way also. I talked to Dave and Cindy , probably just spelled her name wrong. I think they may think it's all fixed and have forgotten. Hope alls well though. so this ones getting shipped! Nice! it's getting seriously chilly out on the highways now even with the Goldwing. LOL of course i am not a guy who has gear or a helmet so that is natural I suppose. does the winner of this one still get to come down if the bikes shipped at some point? :0)
Most of time I couldn't afford the raffle ticket, but I always try to tell fellow bike friends about the charity. This time around I"m going to try to see if I can get a ticket for that sweet ride. Can anyone give me a recommendation on how to ride long distance without getting my throttle hand not to numb up so bad? I just came from a ride that's an hour and some change long, and y right hand is always numb. I tried to relax it when I ride, and mostr of the time I use fingerless gloves. My riding postition is relax on the up area and I mostly hug the tank with my legs so my arms is not stiff. I also use three fingers on throttle, but it always get numb. I don't know. When it do get numb I let ooff on the throttle and shake it oof. Today I road to Daphne, and took 98 all the way down to Foley, and than I went straight down on 59 to I10 I think. Took I10 all the way back home. It was a fum ride for me. The fummiest thing was that my two sons were in the suv following me on the trip. When I got to I10 I took on super ramming speed, but I was careful. Today this ride is a time where I got to know my little cb500f, and I enjoyed every mile of it. I"m hoping if I do get lucky to get that Yommoma VMax it's going to something special. I hope I win.
Following the link took me to the house raffle, didn’t say anything about the Vmax. Don’t get me wrong, the house would be great and all but it’s no Vmax.
