My family sometimes goes camping instead of hoteling. Campsites are generally cheaper and you get to experience the great outdoors: making a fire, toasting marshmallows, and singing around the campfire. Plus, lots of campsites have lakes or pools, sports equipment to rent, and other opportunities for fun.

My tip for travel, if you're traveling within a country or somewhere you can drive, you should drive instead of flying. You'll save on flights, airline fees, and rental car/taxi fees. Sure, gas might cost a bit, but it'll still end up cheaper for you on the way. Plus, you get to see a lot of stuff you normally wouldn't if you took an airplane.

I'm currently trekking around Ireland and only staying in Airbnb places. It's actually worked out cheaper in a lot of places, and if you're travelling on your own it's safer. And since I'm staying with locals, they always give the best recommendations for places to eat, socialise and give good opinions of transport and places to visit. Far better in my opinion. Plus, you'll often get run of a proper kitchen + free breakfast so you can save on meals, so even if the room is more expensive than the hostel, it still works out cheaper per day. Also, definitely research the places you're going to, as said in the video. Lots of USA tourists come over to Ireland with traveller's cheques and then realise that about 5 places in the whole of Ireland actually cash them. I managed to find a travel card with no fees (seriously, none), decent exchange rates and being able to load several currencies at once and easily switch between them made it really easy. Finally, know the weather. So many people pack way more than they need to or interpret another country's season as being the same as their home season. Eg. an Irish summer is actually pretty close to my winter back home and since I knew that, I packed winter clothes and worked with layers, so on the few days it does get hot, I'm still fine.

Getting there: The thing I learned recently is that Greyhound is really the way to go. I always knew about it, but never did it until it recently. Although longer times, it can be as low as $50 round trip. Really, that beats planes by a mile! Plus, unlike planes, they have wifi & outlets. Although getting there takes more time, it's an enjoyable ride & maybe the cheapest you'll find, aside from driving yourself.

Small tip for air travel: find out what your baggage allowance is for the ticket/airline you booked with. If it is $25 a bag under 50lbs, see if you can pack everything you need into a properly sized carry on bag. If you have to check a bag, make sure it does not go overweight as I have seen overweight charges range from $35 a bag over 50lbs, to $600. Source: me working for an airline at an airport where I have to know all baggage allowances and know where to find their overweight fees

If you can go with a group, that always lowers expenses. Being able to split the cost of gas, a hotel, etc. really helps! I've also started doing online surveys to earn flyer miles and have gotten about 3 trips for the price of tax. It takes a while, but it's always been worth it for me.

As a Barcelona local (Barcelonian? Barcelonese?) I recommend visiting a restaurant called "La esuinica" It is a tapas restaurant and it is frequented by locals because it has great quality food at an affordable price. You may want to arrive there well in advance since there is usually a line at dinner time. It is quite far from the touristy area, but it's totally worth the trip.

If you are on a road trip or driving somewhere, planning stops with family/friends, your friends' family/friends, etc. whenever possible can really save on the hotel $. You might have to put up with extra chit-chat (which can be a plus!) and sleep on a couch, but you may get free food, a local perspective of the places you are driving through, and a chance to see people you maybe haven't seen in a while :)

If you're going to a major city, a lot of them now have pass cards that you can buy which seem expensive up front but will get you into pretty much every attraction in the city for what ends up being discounted rates if you go to all the locations. I've only done the London Pass, but it was awesome - we also got discounts at restaurants and gift shops and nice public transportation packages using it, plus it was really convenient to basically have one ticket that got us in everywhere!

I too love the Dland! I go every year on my birthday. Another smart way to travel is going where you have family and friends! this way you have somewhere to stay and save on hotel costs.

Two tips 1) look on groupon for deals and 2) go to Mexico because everything is cheap there! My fiancé and I went to a resort in Cancun that we found on groupon. They had all you can eat, beach access, pool access, snorkeling and a lot more. It was beautiful and tropical, like going to Hawaii but with really really inexpensive store prices (except for souvenirs because those are at tourist prices, but even then locals are usually willing to haggle!)

Knowing about the public transport system in the place you're traveling to is good, as you'll save on taxis and feel a bit more like a local. Some of my funniest travelling stories happened on buses.

Emma #4, Mike #5. My biggest tip is that even if you don't have access to a kitchen, you can still buy food at grocery stores for 1-2 meals a day! Just make sure you bring or buy some silverware and a pocket knife and you can have great picnics with bread, cheese, fruit, etc. For breakfast you can buy individual yogurts, pastries, fruit, etc. And don't forget to shop at local produce markets in addition to grocery stores, you can get really good cheap fruit there! For public transport, do your research on fares and buy an unlimited or multi-day ticket even if you think you'll only just break even... you'll probably end up using it more if you know you can, and your feet will thank you, when you're really tired and just want to get back to your hostel!

This probably only applies to a few people, but if you are flying and can find a flight (mostly in the US) through Southwest, I highly recommend using this airline because you can check in 2 bags per person for free (in addition to one carry-one + one personal item, both free).

I live in Japan, and I can tell you that it is much cheaper to take the Willer Express night buses between cities than it is to take the bullet trains. However, if you want to take the trains multiple times, it's a good idea to get a JR Railpass ahead of time. Not only can you use it to make multiple train reservations, you can use it to go on and off all JR trains for free in Japan.

In the US, if you think you might ever want to travel outside the US, get your passport well ahead of time. We got our son a passport when he was in kindergarten, though he has yet to need it. Trying to get your passport on short notice can end in disaster especially with non-refundable air fare.

If you're traveling a bit around Europe, but not enough to warrant a rail pass, take regional bus services as much as you can! I was traveling around Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands last month and ended up spending about €100 for all my transit in between cities because I used Meinfernbus instead of the train. The train is often over €100 for a single trip and isn't actually much faster on many routes.

For Eastern Europe, I went to Bulgaria a couple of weeks ago. Two weeks all inclusive for only £850, and it's a really lovely place to travel. The exchange rate for £s is also really great so everything is pretty cheap!

For me personally, who I go with is more important than where I go. If that's you too, it's a good idea to figure that out before you board your flight / hit the road / buy your fare / etc.

Pack light, if you can take only a carry on, and invest in a good suitcase or borrow one.(Expandable ones are great if you plan on shopping.) A lot of the time if you are staying with someone or a hostel you will find a place to wash your clothes (like a laundret).

Great tip for traveling, if you have a military friend, invite them with!!! Discounts are plentiful and sometimes way lower then most "cheap" alternatives. As a thank you for their discounts help/offer to pay for some of their portion of the trip. For example: my family (in all 10 adults 3 children) combined spent well over $19,000 on Disney world, where if they would have looked into other options that cost could have been $9,000 total. Still would have been on property and in a nice hotel BUT would have to buy the wrist bands or wait till we got there for them. So if you have a mil bud, see if they can take the leave and search for those deals!!!

If you are a university student or under the age of 26, definitely go through studentuniverse or STA travel. I just bought a round trip ticket between the US and London for over $300 cheaper than buying on Kayak and they even had a "layaway" option where I could lock in my price by doing a deposit and then I can pay it off anytime before I leave.

University campus housing can offer a good midpoint between hostel and hotel. For about 60$ you can usually get a single bed for a night. If you get into travelling with multiple people you can often book an appt style suite for about 150$/night with four beds and an appt style layout. Only offered during the summer unfortunately.

I learned all these tips during study abroad and use them frequently. I definitely recommend! I wish there were still more ways to bring prices down! The most frustrating and scary thing is flights. Just sooo expensive :[

Couchsurfing is free! I use it and I let people stay in my apartment too. Just be polite and don't ask people the day of to stay at their place, Also, and his is not feasible for everyone, but Woofing, working abroad, and working holidays are all great ways to travel long-term. I'm in Japan teaching English and it's a great jumping off point for traveling around Asia--- not to mention that Japan itself is a really interesting country to explore and I feel I get to experience a special part of its culture that a lot of people don't get to see (even other Japanese people) living in the countryside.

DON'T BUY "touristy" SOUVENIRS. Find what food/thing is a local speciality, and try to get it from a supermarket. For example: Tourists in the Netherlands spend loads of money on clogs, delft blue pottery, tulips and cheese. But if they walked away from the tourist shops and walked to the nearest Albert Heijn/Jumbo/Coop (supermarkets), they'd find their cheese, stroopwafels, haagse hopjes for way cheaper! You'll also find that foods or usable things won't easily clutter your home. They make a great conversation starter when you have someone over for tea/dinner. :)

If you're travelling around middle europe be sure to use what we in Germany call "Fernbus". Which is big busses that travel from city to city and they add new locations basically every month! I don't know how good the connections are in other countries but the big German company has a lot of international connections as well! It's so cheap, there's no comparison!

oh American hostels... so expensive! I traveled through West Europe and hostels were 18 euros on rare days... Usually spent 8-11 euros per night, with free Wifi and breakfast!

Emily: 4; T.Mike: 2. Lots of good ideas here. If there isn't a specific destination in mind, often lesser known vacation spots are much more relaxing and less expensive. In a few weeks, we'll be making our way to Ft Myers, FL. We found that it is far cheaper to drive from PA than to fly, as well.

If you're living in/traveling in Europe, Ryanair is your best friend provided you know exactly how to avoid their hidden fees. Avoid exorbitant bag checking and boarding pass printing charges by traveling CARRY ON ONLY and PRINTING YOUR PASS YOURSELF AT HOME. If your bag is pushing the size limit, avoid getting made to check it by being one of the first 90 people on the flight, who they guarantee can keep their bags with them. Get in line early, print your own pass and travel light and enjoy super cheap tickets!

also cruises are a great option maybe do with a buddy to lower costs. It offers a great value and great entertainment. My personal favorite is Norwegian. it is like getting travel and accommodations all rolled in to one.

Travel cheap tip if you like museums: If you like to go see museums on vacations see if there are any museums that in your city that have reciprocity with other like institutions. I live in St. Louis and if I buy a museum membership in STL to our science center, I can go to the Field Museum, Science and Industry Museum and the International Surgical Science Museum in Chicago for FREE!

work for either a hotel and or an airline. if you don't want to do full time there may be some part time options. I work full time for a hotel and the employee rate for rooms is between 39 to 99 dollars a night depending on the hotel. I imagine an airline would be similar maybe take reservations or book flights if it is available.

PROTIP When traveling, transportation geared toward tourists is super expensive. Instead try local transportation like Chicken Buses in central america. it will cost considerably less and you will be able to meet the locals on your way to your destination.

If traveling in Europe a coach might be cheaper then flying. For example a return trip form Liverpool(UK) to Paris is £50 on a Mega Bus compared to £250 on an easy jet.

"Not even planned" as if pffft! A great trip for travelling would be to couchsurf. Stay on a stranger's couch. It's like airbnb but free. Only pick the ones with lots of good reviews to be safe. It's a great way to experience local stuff. It's mostly people who have a space to spare and know the hardships of travelling. Buying your food from the super markets and not eating out every night is good too. Don't give in to people trying to con you for money, it's your money and you can refuse to give it them. Also, it's called a holiday* (not a vacation;))

If you're really looking to travel on the cheap, you can also try couch surfing. Couchsurfing.org is sort of like airbnb in that you can find locals to stay with, but it's free. You usually get fewer "amenities" than you would with airbnb or a hotel, and sometimes you'll just get a couch to crash on as the name suggests, but it's by far the cheapest way to travel. Just make sure you read the reviews on people's profiles before you agree to stay with them and don't stay with anyone who doesn't have reviews or who has a basically empty profile. Lastly, when you're searching through profiles, trust your gut. If you get a weird vibe after reading someone's profile or exchanging messages, don't stay with them!

Why do you assume that flight is the way to go? Driving to and from will probably be less expensive and gives you cheap transportation once you are there. Don't forget bus and train travel either, especially in Europe. There are also tours. Unless you are wedded to the idea of doing something specific, like the mentioned Disney parks, you might find things to do near where you live. Check out Day Trip books and tourism departments of nearby governments for ideas. The idea is to take some time off, doing something you enjoy in order to de-stress.
