Underneath every airport is a maze of conveyor belts that takes your luggage from the ticket counter to the plane. See how your bag makes it's way to your destination.
Thank you for making this video. I have often wondered how everything works with getting the luggage where it needs to go. I am subscribing to your channel to see more and learn more! Very interesting!
Wow what do you eat for breakfast to be handling so many bags each day? Not to mention the massive pushbacks of planes you need to do as well! Respect 🤙
People don't realize it's how US mail goes too!! Never forget on a ORD-LGA quick turn we off loaded and got 14,000lbs of mail in the rear of a 757.. 5 carts and a box truck 🥵
2:11 It's actually neat that you can just pull down on a white cord to make the conveyer belt move ahead. Of course, I wonder if occasionally you get two or more suitcases where you need to put them in the right tug carts and you end up having to walk so far! 😂
I recall years ago flying out of sky harbor and watching out my window as a casket was loaded below. I thought to myself, “if this bird goes down, does that poor soul in the cargo hold count as a fatality?” “Sorry Mrs Caruthers, your dearly departed Frank died again. He went peacefully this time…unlike last week when he drove off the 202 overpass.”
You are correct! Today is was starting to creep up into the high 80’s. I will do a video when it starts getting hotter of how we try and stay as cool as possible! 😎
While checking my bag at American Airlines at Logan, (may 23rd, 2024) the Ticket Counter person DIDNT PLACE my BAG on THE BELT!! and it remained in Boston until the NEXT DAY!! NEVER will I fly American again.
Oh I am so sorry! That is so terrible to not have your bag there when you get your destination! I hope they resolved the issue for you quickly! And I hope you had a great trip :)
Wow! I haven’t seen this one yet! I did not have a chance to look at it. Where the baggage sorting system? Is that above from the concourse? Near the aircraft gates.
The baggage sorting system is huge. Throughout the concourses. But where we get the luggage to take to the gates is actually below the concourses. Closer to the gates.
Each belt or pier…is assigned specific destinations. So the pied that I was working was dropping bags for 2 destinations at that time. The bags then are scanned and separated into the specific carts. On the tag, after scanned, it tells you what gate it goes to.
Not a fan of how the security is for the baggage sorting system. Would be better if once it was sorted and scanned that it be dropped in a chute to a locked checked bagged cargo hauler that can only be opened by the plane cargo foreman. That sorting room would be isolated like a clean room and would only have one door that is a transparent gate that remote guard does not allow materials to brought in or out through the door(cameras) and one emergency door for fire reasons. Room is also heavily surveillanced. Luggage where destination cannot be determined while out on the tarmac goes in an insert only cargo bin that gets brought back to sorting facility where it gets unlocked in a secure facility, again with heavy surveillance to be logged and tagged.
The amount of human intervention, manual handling and shifting bags will be due to the age of the terminal buildings and conveyor systems installed underneath floor down on the ground. Probably next refurbishment, the airline might install a more sophisticated and automatic system, but that will cost mega$, so upgrades wil be limited by space and effective gain versus number of rampers filling carts, etc. Large airports like JFK or Heathrow will have a lot of integrated automation!
